I teach the very basics in playing the classical guitar such as how to hold the guitar, correct finger placement, picking and strumming techniques, learning notes on the guitar, reading tablature, guitar scales, music theory, and learning to play simple classical songs. I have been playing the guitar since I was 10 years old and have had a great deal of experience playing all genres of music including Classical music.

Classical guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Classical repertoire (songs) utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play.

A beginning student will practice all these subjects as part of the daily practice routine. A half hour practice session will ...

Phil is a consummate musician and is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He helped me to arrange several songs and encouraged me to write my own arrangements, as that really helps one better understand the instrument. I loved our lessons on learning all the scales and modes, too.

Phillips teaching is very low key and suttle but very effective. I am astounded at how much he has taught me in a few weeks.

Kind, super knowledgeable, and a clear communicator. Looking forward to the second one.

Michael is an incredible teacher. My fiance has never played a musical instrument before in his life and I got him a few lessons for his birthday. At first, I wasn't sure how virtual music lessons would go, but Michael is by all accounts, an incredibly engaging, funny, and knowledgeable instructor. My fiance looks forward to his weekly lessons with Michael. In particular, he enjoys learning about the history of this incredible instrument alongside the actual music theory and practical aspects of learning a new instrument.

It has been truly incredible to witness my fiance transform in a few short weeks from someone scared of learning a new instrument to someone who is confident that he can learn a new skill provided he puts in the time and effort to practice and show up! Michael has given him the confidence and the inspiration to make amazing progress as a student.

I highly recommend Michael as an instructor. He really makes the virtual format work and he knows how to introduce beginner musicians to the joys of learning how to express yourself on an instrument.

I had the good fortune of having Roberto as my Traditional Harmony and Counterpoint teacher when going for my Music Degree in Mexico City. I can tell you his class was one of a kind and he turned a couple of the most complicated subjects of music into something very enjoyable. He's a strict teacher, but he values hard work dearly and he was always available for a student seeking help.
Manuel Vargas Mena
I had the pleasure and honor of being one of his students in Mexico City while I was in music college. He's a very disciplined teacher (never missed a class) and he has complete dominion over the subjects he teaches. Roberto's not only an amazing guitarist but he has a unique way of teaching music theory and history that makes you quite familiar with the different approaches to music over the different ages. He also shows a legitimate interest over his students, he challenges then and even owns when he's pointed out mistakes by them. During my time as his student I also realized that he was quite respected by the other professors. Fair warning: he can be a little sarcastic but he means no offense whatsoever to his students and fellow musicians.
Quique Escamilla
Roberto is a an excellent music teacher with invaluable knowledge and years of teaching experience. I have had the opportunity to study with him at 2 separate different periods in my music career/life—years ago, at a music college first, and more recently I've had the opportunity to reconnect with him and continue furthering my music knowledge with his great help over online classes. He has been very helpful, very patient, and I can highly recommend him as a great music teacher to anyone, at any level.

I focus on the individual needs of each student, helping them craft a personal practice approach to meet their unique goals and aspirations. The wide-reaching diversity of my performance careers informs my teaching; I'm comfortable teaching classical guitar, jazz improvisation, finger style, folk music, electric guitar, sight-reading; all areas which have been the bread and butter of my 10+ year professional performing experience. I'm always excited to meet my students where they're at, be they first-time beginners or advanced players.

About Nate

I'm a professional musician and doctoral classical guitar student based out of New York City! I have degrees in guitar performance from the Yale School of Music (M.M, M.M.A '19, '20) and the University of North Carolina (B.M. '16), where I've studied classical & jazz guitar, early music, and gene

I knew Nate as a friend before signing up for a lesson, and was not surprised to learn he's an awesome insructor too. I hadn't picked up an instrument in my whole life, and assumed a lesson was already light years ahead of where I was, but Nate made me feel comfortable and gave me a manageable amount of building blocks to practice and build on. I never felt like a noob, and am more excited to play, or at least learn, because of it. He gave me an hour which flew by, and the price was incredibly reasonable. Would highly recommend, Nate's the man, give him a chance!

"My main regret is that I did not start with him when I was much younger!

I have had the pleasure of lessons from Jesse Horner for two years. I started when I was 73 years old and never had any music training before, so I started from scratch. Jesse has been great in guiding me in the direction I seemed to want to go. With almost 40 years experience, I think Jesse has experience and knowledge of every aspect of music theory, guitars and guitar playing(also Ukuleles). He makes the lessons enjoyable and is very flexible and understanding in his teaching process. My main regret is that I did not start with him when I was much younger!
