I have been teaching ukulele since 2014. I teach in a therapeutic style, using my music therapy training to be as observant, adaptive and flexible as I need to be for the student's benefit. I teach at the student's pace and to their interests, while building their musicality, music theory, and performance skills. I often incorporate singing into ukulele lessons as well. 1-2 times a year, we work towards building a repertoire of 1-4 pieces (depending on the student) to play at a local assisted living facility or skilled nursing facility.

About Laura

I have been teaching music lessons since 2001. I teach piano, flute, guitar and ukulele. I have played piano for most of my life, then started playing the flute in elementary school, then the guitar and ukulele in college. I attended California State University, Northridge, where I received my b

Ukulele students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. The student chooses what songs they want to play, guided by my suggestions; Jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, R &B - "How deep is the ocean, how high is the sky?"

A beginning student will practice ...

Phil is a consummate musician and is extremely knowledgeable and patient. He helped me to arrange several songs and encouraged me to write my own arrangements, as that really helps one better understand the instrument. I loved our lessons on learning all the scales and modes, too.

Phillips teaching is very low key and suttle but very effective. I am astounded at how much he has taught me in a few weeks.

The Ukulele is such a fun instrument to play. It's a small instrument with a big sound. There is actually 4 different sizes you can choose from: Soprano, Concert, Tenor, and Baritone. The first 3 have the same string arrangement which is
G, C, E, A, and the Baritone is D, G, B, E, which is the same tuning as the first 4 strings on a guitar. Soprano is the smallest and the Baritone is the largest. If you want the true Hawaiian sound you need the Soprano. If you have really big hands or thick fingers you might want to go with the Concert or Tenor size so it will be easier to play.

They are very affordable instruments. The one I have is a Fender U Uke it was around 109.00. It's easier then guitar because you don't have to press down as hard on the strings.

Some of my favorite Ukulele players and bands that incorporate it are Jack Johnson, Brian May from Queen, Beach Boys, Elvis, Israel Iz, and many more.

I teach beginner to intermediate level for single and group lessons.

About Christian

Music is my passion. I've been playing music since I was a child but didn't get serious with it until I was 14, that's when I got my first electric guitar. So, from then on I've been playing and studying music for over 16 years. I play and teach guitar, piano, drums, and bass guitar. Aside from taki

Christian has been top-notch in every way I could hope for. His communication prior to and after the lesson has been stellar, taking time to prep me then follow up with thorough, well written tips and details. (It's clear that he values the student's time as much as his own, and seeks to make the experience individualized and worthwhile for those he teaches.) The lesson itself was spot-on, being well balanced in both fun and degree of challenge. Feel very fortunate to have found him!

Christian easily connects with my teenage son. He is professional while at the same time relaxed and easy-going. He stresses the importance of learning the basics but there is no high pressure. He strives to teach music that is interesting to my son and that challenges him. He does a great job of explaining things. We are happy we chose Christian as our teacher.

"Edwin is Awesome!! And he was wonderful with my 5 year old. My son was a tad shy at first, but he warmed up pretty quickly. I was actually surprised he was using the pick by the time class was over! It went so well, we decided to book class twice a week instead of just once. :) We're looking forward to the next class. Thank you, Edwin!"

"Nick is an amazing ukelele teacher! He has been teaching my 9-year-old son for about 8 months now. He is cheerful and enthusiastic, and an undeniable talent. His teaching style is at once relaxed ("feeling" the music over strict adherence to technique), and rigorous (dropping in some heavy music theory early on). He's teaching my son to be a "musician", not just a "ukulele player". He encourages creativity and tailors the lessons to what our son enjoys. He sends a great summary email after each lesson with notes and reminders and things to work on for the next week. And his lessons even carry over nicely to how my son is learning piano. We would recommend him highly."
