Music Theory is discussed daily in my studio! Where would we be without it! I introduce principles that are required for any given piece - but recognize that a discussion on Music Theory can take up the whole class - so I am careful to review applicable items as needed. The music binder that all students use are filled though out the months with various Music Theory concepts along with exercises and repertoire. Originally from Boulder, Colorado, Marty moved to the Phoenix, AZ area eight years ago. Marty has over 20 years of performing and teaching experience. She studied for three years at the School of Music, University of Colorado, Boulder. She has studi
ed in the Masters program in vocal pedagogy and has performed in a variety of venues from blues to opera.

You will find her pedagogy technique to be respectful of the masters that have come before her. She is also open to new techniques from belting (in popular music), to microphone usage skills. As a student, you will be invited to perform in student recitals. You will be joining a team of dedicated, passionate performers who know the pleasure of performing.

As a beginning and intermediate piano instructor, Marty will guide you in the basics of sight reading. If you prefer, your piano classes will consist primarily of improvisation and chord progressions (you will also learn a little bit of sight reading which will help you 'flesh out' the melody). You will gain a solid foundation in music theory as well as an introduction into the vast world of music history. All age ranges are welcome, from the beginning elementary student, to the retiree just now finding the time to pursue their passion to perform.

I have authored a variety of music theory articles to assist you with your progress. We use these in the lessons to speed up your assimilation of the material. You will receive support via this literature and will quickly recognize how music theory supports your efforts with either singing or playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is unique to you. How you currently sing and what you want to sing will be the foundation from which we work. We will explore your voice and strengthen it via breath and physical exercises and practice with a repertoire that suits your individual tastes. We will also prepare your mind for quick and fluid articulation of your musical sensitivities.

Music theory and various musical explorations will assist you in moving forward in the most rapid manner possible. Whether you are twelve years old or sixty-five, you will find fun as well as perceptive methods for strengthening your passion for musical performance.

Since your body is your instrument, I am very conscious of the need to assist you in waking your body up in order to perform most successfully. The warm-up exercises include not only traditional vocalizes, but also methods for stretching your body and strengthening your diaphragmatic breathing. My students become very aware of any residual tension in their bodies. Singing is a wonderful way to get in touch with - and expel - any way in which you might 'close down' or 'tense down' your physical body. By working with a caring professional, you will learn how to freely share your unique talent with the world.

As we progress through the series of classes, you will use breathing exercises to activate the thoracic (throat & chest) and visceral (stomach) cavities. Your lessons will continue into specific vocalization exercises; such as singing scales, triads and specific exercises to assist you with fluid musical expression. Traditional ear training will also be a part of the lessons for intermediate students.

Many of the lessons I teach include a theme of working on confidence, vocal projection, breath support, finding and releasing tension, vocal range expansion, audition preparation and stage performance. All singing includes a core of story-telling. You will be encouraged to 'deconstruct' a song and discover the story, along with the emotions that are found in the lyrics of the songs you will sing.

In a similar fashion, my piano students will work on exercises to establish kinesthetic learning or muscle-memory. I have a unique method for sharing chord-progressions and piano improvisation. You will learn to quickly share music in a satisfying and pleasing manner that will surprise you and the people who hear your music. From your unique 'ear,' and via your new-found understanding of music theory, music will pour out of your piano.

As a piano student, you will also be exposed to lessons of the masters who have taught for hundreds of years. Sight-reading at the piano is a very enjoyable skill. It is also a foundation from which we will work (while taking in mind your particular interests). Again, whether a pre-teen or a senior citizen (or anyone in between!) who has finally found the time to explore their musical talent - you will find classes uniquely suited to your musical trajectory.

Your lessons will proceed as you acquire the ability to successfully perform your exercises and musical literature. Playing the piano fluidly and sharing your abilities with others is an amazing experience! Piano, metronome, microphone and amp. I can provide supplemental piano music; in some cases, students will need to purchase their own music. I also have an area where parents can wait for lessons to end. We also have a market or restaurant close-by as well.

*** Travel Equipment ***
When traveling to student's homes - they need to have a piano. In some cases, students also need to buy their own voice or piano books. In the event that a vocal student prefers in-home lessons and does not have a piano, I can bring an electric piano to the lessons (let's talk!).

Marty has a true heart for music! She really cares about the success of her students. The only reason I didn't give her 5 stars is because I had a long-time instructor previously who was out of this world, so I couldn't select "Best Instructor ever" as that would do him a disservice. He no longer teaches. Marty comes in a close second and I would recommend her services. She is sweet and kind. I enjoyed my time with her!

He is a very patient teacher. And he's very flexible on his schedule by moving our schedule to an earlier time because we had a prior engagement in the afternoon. And most of all, my daughter now knows the basics and we will most likely contact him again in case we decide to continue guitar lessons.

I have eight years teaching experience. Of those seven, five of them have been in music stores wherein I taught students of all ages, musical interests and skill levels. My students have gone on to form rock bands of their own, compete in singer/songwriter contests and pick up other musical instruments all because of the musical interest/passion I have helped develop.

I am very involved in the local music scene. I have written, produced, engineered and played on many recordings ranging in genre from folk to metal and classical to jazz. My band, Oceanborn, will be releasing our debut album in two weeks (10/1/2013) wherein I wrote, produced, engineered and tracked guitar. My teaching style has three major areas: technique, theory and composition. I try to motivate students to write their own music and by doing this I establish a need for theory and technique to accomplish what it is they may feel or hear in their heads.

I try very hard to establish and maintain a comfortable environment with my students. In a comfortable place, someone will be open and not afraid to express themselves and make mistakes. Moreover, they will be able to recap the benefits of having a one-on-one musical instructor that can help them reach their goals.

I respond to passion very quickly. I can promise if the student is serious about learning guitar and passionate about music all together, then they will excel quickly with me and have much versatility to show for the hard work and practice.

Pro Tools, music workstation, keyboards, guitars, basses, amps, effects processing, microphones, stools, studio monitors all in a carpeted finished basement with good lighting. Also, I have a private (gated) parking space.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide instrument cables, tuner, music stand and practice amplifiers. I always expect a student to have his or her own guitar with a complete set of strings. However, I am always willing to let a student use one of my guitars for experimental purposes. Also, depending on the student and type of lesson, more may be required; such as: a computer with recording software, audio interface and a keyboard.

I started taking flute lessons with Stephanie last September 2016. I have been playing flute since 2011 and play regularly at church. I take a hour long lesson. I have really enjoyed taking lessons from her. She has also been willing to adjust to my schedule, when she could, when work won’t allow me to make it to my normal lesson.
I had been taking lessons from another flute teacher since 2011 and knew it was time to change. Stephanie has always been able to help me. She is very knowledgeable about all questions and problems I was having on playing the flute or reading music. When questioning a technique she is able to demonstrate it or explain it in a different way so I could understand it. I’ve always had trouble with the high notes and alternate fingering and she definitely has helped me on those. Stephanie personally is a lot more enjoyable than my last teacher. She always seems happy to see me.
I also play Low Flutes and just bought my first Bass Flute. She also plays low flutes.

Music has been my passion for the past 18 years. I started piano when I was 5 yrs old and the violin when I was 7 yrs old. I continued with lessons until I entered the Detroit High School for Performing Arts. During my sophomore year, I took additional classes at Wayne Sate University for music theory and in my senior year I took on my first piano students. I have been teaching piano, violin and music theory ever since. I have also choreographed and taught dance for many years as dancing has been with me since my first lessons at 4 yrs old. My focus is in ballet, tap and jazz. I am a graduate from Eastern Michigan University where I was actively a part of the music and dance program.

When did you begin playing [instrument], and why?:

I've been singing since I was about 8. I began to play piano when I was a teenager, because many of my classmates were very skilled at the piano, and I became inspired to be like them.

What are your personal goals as a musician?:

I love opera, and my goal is to compose my own. I plan on working closely with the librettist, since I'm a poet as well.

Do you have a memory of a time when a musical concept or technique really clicked? Something you'll remember forever?:

I never knew what perfect pitch was until I was much older. I also didn't realize I had perfect pitch until a professor at an audition made me aware of my ability. Since then, it's become a wonderful tool.

What is your favorite piece of advice from one of your past (or current) teachers?:

Being compassion
ate with a student will allow them to fearlessly open up to their potentials.

What was your most challenging moment learning an instrument?:

In the winter months, my body feels tight and cold, and sometimes this causes tension during playing or singing. That's why to me it's important to work in a warm environment, do proper daily stretching, and have a healthy lifestyle (good diet, exercise, proper sleep).

What is your biggest musical achievement?:

Composing a fugue.

About Anabelle...

Anabelle has been involved with sounds and music from an early age. Her greatest forte is her hearing. When she was young, people thought she might become a voice actor, because her skill at replicating voices was quite apparent. Still, she loved to sing and had been regularly involved in choirs. She dabbled in violin in the fifth grade, but she didn't feel a "click." Without despairing, she tried her luck with piano and felt instantly in sync. She knew this was the right instrument for her. During her piano studies, she continued to work on her voice. In addition, she studied the workings of a sound board, and was head sound chief at her high school. At the college level, she began to pursue composition, while still continuing with piano and vocal studies. She holds an A.A. with a music focus (piano performance), a B.M. in music theory, and a M.M in music education from Boston University. She has been teaching music since 2006 and has worked with a wide range of ages and various group sizes. Her joy is working with people in a field that she is passionate about. - Warm-ups: trills, scales, 5 finger patterns, thirds, octaves, etc.

- Demonstration of all pieces while working on any problems
- Assignment and demonstration, practice and special directions for each piece.
- Theory check and new assignment. Complete as needed.
- As time permits, review of flashcards, ear training and so forth.
- Music Lab (either before or after the lesson as fits in with the students around you) - 15-20 minutes of independent study: musical computer games to support what we are working on, read books about music, composers, music history and so forth, listen to music as supports what we are working on, complete any missed theory assignments, review of flashcards if needed.

WHO AM I?
I am Karen. I love Music! My family has always incorporated music into our lives. Some of my earliest memories are being danced around in my Mom’s arms and listening to her sing. I began formal lessons on the Piano when I was 7 years old. Growing up also I sang in the Church Choirs, played on Hand Bells, and explored the Flute. I spent a formal year each on Trumpet, Drums and Harpsichord and am currently working on learning Zither, Autoharp, Dulcimer, and Soprano & Alto Recorders, and sometimes the guitar (when I have a chance). Of course, I also regularly read and attend lectures, conferences, seminars and master classes to always improve my teaching skills. I have been teaching piano and music theory for over 31 years in this area and have played professionally. I am a member in good standing with the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA), and was with the California Association of Music Teachers (CAPMT), Empire Music Teachers Association (EMTA), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), the Suzuki Association of North America, the National & the Inland Empire Kodaly-Orff Association, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy – I have not hooked up here yet. I am a fully certified and licensed teacher of Kindermusik and Musikgarten and have earned National Certification (NCTM) through the MTNA and have earned Level I & II (out of 3) in Orff-Scheulwerk. I was District IV Coordinator for CAPMT, and Vice President then President of the EMTA. I keep busy and love teaching!

WHAT DO WE DO HERE?
I try hard to present students with a solid, broad based approach with an emphasis on understanding the fundamentals of musical comprehension, music reading, musical memory, and ear development. These are essential to playing and enjoyment of any instrument! To this end we cover theory, music history, performance, technique and practical application. These basics are supplemented and reinforced by the monthly group sessions, several annual field trips, access to regional, state and national music competitions and performances, as well as the formal Student Evaluations each Spring. I have a full music lab, an extensive library of music and music reference materials and up to date postings on local free or low cost musical events While I tend to emphasize classical music and technique, we will also cover a wide range of music in various meters and modalities: classical, popular and world music in solos and duets. Supplementary books are available: holiday, religious, popular, classical, music from specific times, places, composers, movies... or whatever the student wishes, when they are ready. My personal goal is not to have a studio full of competition performers. A few are always nice of course, but the average student just wants to be able to make music - to make it sing. I DO want them to understand, appreciate, and be able to pick up something and figure it out - or apply what they know to another instrument. Once music is part of a life, it never leaves; it is the one universal language.

Music theory lessons are perfect for those preparing to major in music, or for those who simply wish to improve their understanding of how music works. Lesson topics may include music fundamentals and notation, scales and modes, intervals and transposing, basic and extended harmonic materials, musical form and texture, counterpoint, harmonic progression, and 20th century techniques. Students will explore music history along the way by listening to and analyzing relevant examples from music literature. Students will also compose and learn basic keyboard technique as they progress in their theory knowledge.

About Kendra
Music lessons provided by Kendra C., Doctor of Musical Arts. Kendra has been teaching music to all ages for the past ten years in her own studio as well as in universities, arts academies, public and private schools, and summer camps. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2011 with a doctorate in Music Composition, and has had her original compositions performed by musicians in concerts and conferences around the world. Besides teaching, she has worked as pianist for ballet companies and as church pianist and keyboardist in both liturgical and contemporary services.

Kendra's students explore technique, expressive performance, reading and notating music, improvisation, critical listening, and music theory in a fun and creative format. The musical repertoire is selected according students' stylistic preferences, whether pop mus

This is my first time taking piano lessons from an instructor and Kendra was amazing. Kendra really wants to help you accomplish your goal and takes you into steps that will lead you to that goal.

I've taught music theory since 2013. I teach traditional classical counterpoint and voice leading, modern jazz theory, and twentieth century extended harmonic techniques. I bring the students examples from various time periods and styles to analyze the theoretical framework of music.

Bryan received a Bachelors of Arts in piano performance from Berklee College of Music in 2016. As an expert in piano performance, sound design, sound engineering, and composition, Bryan is excited to help people achieve their musical goals. Bryan has studied many musical idioms especially Jazz, Classical, Blues, and many world folk and classical traditions. Bryan is a composer and songwriter, who uses many composition techniques from traditional baroque counterpoint, twelve tone serialism, and traditional Carnatic forms.

Bryan helps his students to play easily with relaxed technique, but to also understand the compositional integrity. Bryan also helps his
students with ear training and improvisational excersizes. Though mostly Bryan explores new musical avenues with his students to help them succeed.

I went to Bryan for a piano lesson--it was great! He was extremely patient and definitely knows his stuff. He was able to carefully and clearly explain challenging musical ideas to me. He also provided very practical tips that almost immediately improved my piano playing. When teaching, he is able to demonstrate even the most complex of techniques. The lesson was informative and well taught! None of my previous teachers even come close. I'll definitely be back!
