Taking up Ukulele was a great way to look at music from a new perspective. I love teaching ukulele to younger kids who cannot make chords on a guitar quite yet as well as adults who are serious musicians that have been playing for years. I welcome everyone from the novice to the hobbyist and do my best work with student requests.

Ukulele students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are a part of basic music vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Chords are also basic vocabulary of the musical language.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the students' goals. However, I strongly encourage everyone learn to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. The student chooses what songs they want to play, guided by my suggestions; Jazz, rock, blues, country, bluegrass, R &B - "How deep is the ocean, how high is the sky?"

A beginning student will practice ...

My 16-year-old ---who had not practiced for over a year---is absolutely loving her lessons with Ms. Avenira! With only 3 lessons, I am now seeing the spark for playing the violin return to my daughter's eyes. Ms. Avenira is meeting my daughter "where she is" and truly customizing lessons to move her forward. She provides detailed updates for each lesson, and I could not be happier with my investment. Excellent teacher.
Michelle P.
Avenira really connected with my 14 year old, while our daughter has always been enthusiastic to learn an instrument, putting in the practice and the work has been a challenge in the past. Avenira's format, which allows flexibility for how the student learns best, is really working. My daughter has been practicing every night (unprompted by us), and is really excited abut her next lesson with Avenira. She also loves that she can learn both guitar and piano with Avenira, since she is interested in both. Avenira was very motivating, complimenting our daughter for being focused and for doing a great job during the lesson. Definitely would rate Avenira A+++++++!!
Ela
Avenira has such kindness! She has taught me so so much and she was the best instructor I had. She let me learn the song I wanted to learn, and I felt more passionate and confident about my singing and playing than ever. I wanted to practice more, I wanted to become better, and this never happened with other instructors.

Carlos definitely earned a 5 star rating! Bought lessons for a friend as a gift after I watched a couple of his YouTube videos. Before and after bookong, he was communicative and flexible on scheduling. My friend just took her first lesson and could not contain her excitement! Said she learned more in 45 minutes than she had in for plus years. She plans to continue learning from him. Thanks Carlos!
Charles W.
Coming from piano, the guitar has always seemed daunting to me. Prior to my lessons with Carlos, I had tried to teach myself songs/chords without much luck. Fortunately for me, Carlos turned out to be an extremely patient, friendly and competent teacher - I immediately knew I’d be progressing quickly with him! His qualifications speak for themselves, but I can’t recommend Carlos enough.

"As both a music teacher AND a person, Teresa is a real gem! She's been teaching my daughter ukulele for about 9 months now, and the amount of progress we've witnessed is amazing! I'm a musician myself, and have known quite a few music teachers through the years, and I know firsthand how truly difficult it is to find a good one, and Teresa is a GREAT one. In addition to that, she's such a warm, kind, intuitive person that's she's just a joy to be around, in general. I can't recommend her highly enough!"

"I started learning Ukulele with Kevin and then picked up Guitar lately, Kevin has a systematic way of teaching, instead of covering each and every chords, he summarizes them by different shapes, and also their variations, so you can memorize the basics and find their "relative" chords easier. He also taught music theories, how each chord is formed, and if you want to play a specific song, he's also glad to help on finding the exact chord and transfer them into different notes that suits you. Definitely have your notebook ready since there's a lot to learn. The harder thing for myself is with the online class, it's not as efficient as a face-to-face one, I also tend to be less motivated to practise but you ought to just find your own motivation!"

Uke Players Who Will Inspire (and Surprise) You!

I have a question for you. How many famous uke players can you name? After America’s Got Talent skyrocketed Grace VanderWaal to fame, chances are you can name at least one. The spunky and talented then 12-year old certainly made the ukulele a well-known instrument and showed that you can make a career out of this often undervalued instrument. You may be surprised to learn, however, that there are many other famous musicians who play the ukulele, and some non-musicians whose ukulele playing may …
