I want to inspire creativity in my lessons, not just teaching from the book. My students will have the freedom to learn curent songs of all genres, make their own or just play around with chords and rolls once they learn.

About Alex

Hi! I'm Alex I am a student and former football player at The University of Alabama. I have been playing banjo for 5 years now and love sharing my experience with those who are less experienced. My favorite part of teaching is allowing the student to be creative and not just sticking to a book like

I'm comfortable teaching the banjo in a variety of styles but will typically start in Bluegrass. I can teach both Scruggs style finger picking and basic to intermediate Clawhammer. My comfort zone is higher in the Scruggs style of playing however.

I also teach beginning to advanced Irish Tenor Banjo (GDAE Tuning) and Tenor Banjo (CGDA Tuning). Though it looks similar to the 5-string bluegrass banjo, the Irish Tenor Banjo and Tenor have only 4 strings and are played with a traditional guitar pick (a "plectrum" - though a "plectrum" banjo is tuned different then these other 2) and strummed rather then plucked with individual fingers.

I can teach the Plectrum Banjo as well (CGBD Tuning) but will be teaching you on a 5 string banjo that I only play with four strings.

About Jared

I am overjoyed and grateful to say I have been teaching music since 2008. I am a very friendly and fun teacher with a great deal of professionalism and patience. More importantly, I love teaching and playing music with a passion. I play a great variety of instruments and have had the opportunity

Fun first lesson. Jared was ready on-time and figured out quickly where to begin working and also had very good integration with the computer, pulling up charts and sheet music and helping us follow along. We look forward to more lessons!

I've had three banjo teachers over the past two and a half years. Judging by Jared's performance today, he's the best of the lot. The first banjo teacher expected too much too soon, and the second one started me out with the basics, as if I had never picked up a banjo before. Jared is starting our lessons at the right stage for where I am. He's patient and explains things well. If I had started with him two and a half years ago, I'd be a decent banjo player by now. Thanks, Jared!!!!!

Jonathan is truly outstanding. I was fortunate enough to meet him and begin working on guitar again with him in person when he lived in Virginia. He was so helpful I have continued lessons online and I continue to feel the quality and what I'm getting out of the lessons is as good as when we were able to be in the same room. The best thing I can probably say is that I have really enjoyed learning from such an accomplished musician while never feeling intimidated or thinking, "he must think I really stink at this!" He's very supportive and will make you a better player...whatever that means to you.

I have been playing and teaching banjo since 2006, and I'm always very excited to introduce new students to this unique instrument. I focus on the "Scruggs-style" method of playing 5-string banjo, and we'll work on techniques used in common bluegrass and folk tunes. As you advance, I'll help you in creating your own banjo solo breaks.

About Lyle

- Degree in Music Theory / History from University of Wisconsin - Whitewater. - 25 years' teaching and performing experience. - Fluent in all electric styles, plus acoustic and classical. *** Lesson Details *** I like to cover the fundamentals while focusing on your personal goals. All stages

So far so good. Very patient as mistakes after mistake was made. Corrected quite a few mistakes I was making so that my habits would be good habits from the start. Let me talk to myself as I messed up and complimented me when I was on the right track.

Great lesson! Thanks!

complete novice; adult student. First lesson very relaxed. Excellent blend through-out lesson of questions and information my goals and background as well as instructor's goals for me and his background. First "technical" part of lesson was manageable and care taken by Lyle to make sure I understood what was being presented. I left the first lesson feeling this would be a good fit between instructor and student

"Derek is a very knowledgable instructor, easy to talk to, and I found his teaching technique is very motivating. He set realistic practice goals for the next session, which will require me to do my part, but that's the reason we show up, to learn how to play a musical instrument.
I highly recommend him."

"Love that my 11 year old can take the lessons from home. He is in a car a lot of the week, so being able to not loose time over sitting in traffic yet again, is really fantastic.
I don’t stay in the room for his classes, but what I notice with Ryan, is that my son is making steady progress and is taking up the banjo every day to practice, without me having to tell him too. That, to me, is an accomplishment on its own :)
Love these lessons, love Ryan who is friendly, relaxed and practical. Two thumbs up."

Super patient to begin with and he really knows his stuff. Now I'm able to play a couple songs and take what he gave me and build from there. I would highly recommend him for anyone."

"I wish I had found Mike sooner!

I tried to learn banjo on my own. Bought books, instruction CDs, videos on You Tube. It just wasn't happening for me - I was about ready to give it up. Met Mike at a Bluegrass event and after just a few lessons I was really moving forward! After a few months he had me going to Bluegrass Jam Sessions. Wow is that fun!

Mike is very patient and non-judgmental. He easily accomodates my work schedule. While he is a fine banjo player himself - our lessons are always about me and how to improve my playing. I always look forward to our next lesson."

Are Heavy Metal Banjos The Next Big Thing?

Loud, jangly, and twangy, the banjo is an instrument with a distinctive voice that immediately evokes the spirit of the American South. Long a mainstay of bluegrass music, banjos have recently been incorporated into pop music as well by bands like Mumford and Sons. And, if YouTube trends are any indication, it looks like the banjo is making another genre shift! A pack of viral videos featuring banjo covers of hard rock classics are making the rounds and proving that banjos can shred just a …
