I have been teaching voice for 10 years and my beginner students are already singing their own gigs. I have had only one advanced student in singing and in 2010 he got the zarzuela prize in the most prestigious opera competition in the world "Placido Domingo´s Operalia). I can teach in Spanish, English, and Italian. and for the voice, I specialize in opera and mariachi music. In guitar as well as in Piano I only teach beginners.

For voice, opera and mariachi are my fields of expertise, however, I have taught other genres. I firmly believe that with great discipline and a huge desire for success, a student could be singing in less than 6 months in a proper, healthy and beautiful way.

I do no come from a singing background, however I am a stage actor. I first went in search of a voice teacher because I was told that my instrument was not strong and I needed to train it. I was so lucky to find Octavio. Not only is he an amazingly talented and gifted artist himself, but he has the patience and the nurturing capacity I feel all teachers and coaches should have when teaching. I walked into my first class not knowing a thing about voice, but he did not dumb down anything because of that. He expects excellence and professionalism from you and will challenge you to go beyond where you think you could. With out him I am certain I would not have been prepared for graduate school acting auditions. I am very sad to see him go, but I'm glad that others will get to experience his gift! Thank you so much Octavio! You really have helped my confidence so much as a performer and set me on a path to learn more about voice and to seek more training.

I have been writing and performing music since he was 15. Along the way I have played or recorded with numerous notable bands including Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees George Clinton and Parliament Funkedic, and members of Bob Dylan's band. I am a laid back teacher with a diverse and serious knowledge of music. I truly love music and inspiring new or continuing musicians. I can adapt my lessons to the student so that if you have professional goals I will do my best to challenge and help you to reach them, or if you are a child who is just beginning I will do my best to teach you in a fun and relaxed manner that keeps you excited to come back and learn more the next week. No matter what the age or skill level I take my job very seriously, and try to make the process seriously fun.
If the students is interested in reading standard music notation I teach from the Hal Leonard Guitar Method series, which are the books of choice for countless music instructors. After 3 to 6 months most students have finished at least the first book in the series and can read and play simple songs easily.
If you are interested in reading tablature or chord charts, I have many lesson plans from years of experience that can quickly teach you how to play everything from simple folk songs and popular music to complex Jimi Hendrix solos.
If you are interested in classical guitar, or vocals I start with books of simple spanish guitar etudes and can work with you all the way up to complex advanced works from Segovia and the other masters. In a few months, even beginning students can play beautiful pieces that will impress family and friends.
If you are a banjo student I teach from the Hal Leonard Banjo Method series. I can work with simple clawhammer techniques, or more complex bluegrass methods. In a few months most students can play many simple country and folk songs.
If you are a vocal student I can teach anything from rock/country styles, to showtunes and classical techniques. In a few months I can show how to sing and breath correctly, and help learn how to read music and train your ears to sing in tune.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. I will give you assignments to do over the week, and the next week we will go over them, learn something new and get new assignments. It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert!

About Scott
As a composer I have found it necessary never to stray too far from performance. The shear exhilaration one can obtain through playing an instrument is unique and powerful. I have devoted my life to trying to understand and master this elusive beast we call Music. As a child, of a peculiar spirit, I demanded my parents get me guitar and piano lessons. I felt an instant connection to these instruments and was compelled to investigate. After years of inquiry I ended up attending New School for the Arts, a high school devoted to the arts where I
studied music composition. From there, I went on to the University of Arizona to receive degrees in Music Composition and Philosophy with minors in Mathematics and English Literature. For my Masters' programs I wondered into the world of contemporary composers and experimental music at Mills College
in Oakland where I finished my M.A. in Music Composition as well as my M.F.A. in Electronic Music and Recording Media. All the while pursuing a mastery of the instruments that caught my ear in the first place.

I have now returned to Tucson to work on my music and further my education in the field of philosophy at the University of Arizona.

I am laid back and playful in my approach. I like to gear lessons toward the interests of the student, and if I am doing my job correctly, all traditional technique will be painless. I also like to delve into music theory to give one a deeper appreciation as well as an understanding and steady grasp of the tools of composition if their heart is so inclined. When it comes to music I am rather eclectic and I feel every style has something to add to the techniques of a solid performer, so I tend to draw from many disparate places to offer a fuller experience. In no time at all, you should be playing pieces you love, understanding how they work, and perhaps embellishing them or writing your own.

this was my first guitar lesson with scott, and it's been many years since i've even tried picking up a guitar. i enjoyed the lesson. scott started with me at a place that was good and comfortable for me. i felt like a klutz and he had a good way as a teacher in working with me at that klutzy level, listening to me and going at a pace that felt good. i'm grateful, and i know i need to show it by practicing!

About Ray
I grew up in a musical family in Tucson, where my dad was a high school choir teacher for 25 years. I had the privilege to be in his choirs for 2 years! I attended Northern Arizona University studying music education/performance 3 years (music scholarship), Pima College music ed. 1 year. This included 3 hours per semester of private voice. Basically a different language every semester (French, Italian, German). During this time I formed an acoustic folk/rock duo night club act and played around Tucson for several years. Then I moved to L.A. to pursue my dreams. There I played beach clubs in another duo. I also was a studio singer and produced and sold a couple of jingles. I have been a staff singer with Arizona Opera since 1992. I have been in 80 + productions/600+ performances. I just signed a contract to be in 3 operas in the 2012 - 201
3 season. Also in 1992 I started my own business as a pre-school music specialist and that has been my day job for the last 20 years. I'm known as "Mr. Ray" to tens of thousands of Tucson pre-schoolers and see about 1500 little guys a week!

I have been teaching guitar and voice privately for 35years. I've had students as long as 8 years! Teaching is one of my greatest passions in life. I have a wealth of experience to draw from and would love to help you or your child realize your dreams! Obviously I specialize in kids but have had many adult students also.

I am also a recording engineer with a multi track project studio. I have produced 2 children's CD's: "Mr. Ray Sings the Dinosaur Dance and Other Favorites" and "Mr. Ray Sings Lullabies".

I've been writing songs since the 70's and can help you in many ways in that field!

*** Lesson Details ***
I have a patient style that is infused with energy! My curriculum depends on age and student goals. Acoustic guitar and voice are my specialties. Texts include Hal Leonard Guitar Method Books 1 - 3 and Beginning Classroom Guitar by Philip Hemo as well as strumming patterns and finger picking. I do assign homework. Voice lessons include ear training, vocal exercises, accessing all notes in your range and , of course, working on songs of music styles/artists you like. All students are furnished with a cd recording of the lesson. The goal for most is to perform and I have many opportunities including recitals and X-mas shows. After 3 - 6 months? Progress depends on you!

My 13 year old son just had his first lesson with Ray to improve his vocals for musicals, and we were both so impressed. Ray subtly evaluated where my son was starting from, and how quickly he could master a technique and move on. He has a laid back style and is kind and funny, yet manages to stay focused and move the lesson forward with efficiency. He offered both recommendations for improvement as well as positive reinforcement. The CD that he sends home with each student after each lesson is a brilliant idea... when we got home, my son listened to how much his voice improved in just that 45 minutes, and why, and practiced those techniques. Ray's home studio is comfortable and airy, and there is a nice sitting area outside the studio's glass doors for parents during the lesson. We can't wait for the next lesson!

Pianist Leanna L., 26, began her piano studies at age six and violin studies at age eight. At age 11, Ms. L. performed the Mozart's Piano Concerto no. 26 with the East West Symphony in Sydney, under the baton of Henryk Pisarek. Ms. L. has also soloed with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and was invited to play at the City of Sydney Cultural Council Outstanding Performer's Concert in April 2008. She has placed in several Australian competitions and is a two-time winner of Sydney "Theme and Variations" Outstanding Pianist Award and a three-time finalist for the ABC Symphony Australia Young Performer's Award. In 2006, Ms. L. was one of three students honored by the Cultural Council at the Sydney McDonalds Arts Challenge. She made an appearance at the Sydney Opera House as a result of being awarded third place in the 2007 national Austr
alian Higher School Certificate Music Extension course. In 2008 Ms. L. won the Werner Baer Memorial Award and the audience prize in the Cochem International Piano Summer Festival in Germany. Most recently, Leanna participated at the Banff International Piano Master-Classes in Canada last year.

Ms. L. studied with Margaret Hair in Australia and has made several appearances performing in the United States, Canada, Germany, Asia and Russia. She has also performed in master classes for Marc Durand, Gary Graffman, Robert Levin, Susan Starr, Jacques Rouvier, Richard Raymond and Sarkis Baltaian. Several years ago I was privileged to have Ric contribute his talent to my CD project. He is an amazing musician and a gentleman!

Ric is an excellent teacher and musician who genuinely desires to impart his expertise to those he teaches. He is relevant and experienced. His vast musical knowledge and sphere of influence are a tremendous asset to the music community with years of experience and a sincere attitude that is infectious.

Basic theory methods include scales, intervals, non-chord tones, 1st through 3rd species counterpoint, basic voice leading, building blocks of form, etc.

Intermediate theory methods include 4th and 5th species counterpoint, part writing and voice leading including modulations, leading tone chords, secondary dominants, and form of inventions and fugues.

Advanced theory includes set theory, part writing with modulation to distantly related keys, analyzing atonal music, German, Italian, and French augmented sixth chords.

Only beginning and partial intermediate theory is needed to exceed on the AP test.

Kierstyn E. St. John is a pianist, composer, arranger and improviser who possesses an impressive repertoire of more than 500 memorized songs in every genre from classical to jazz to contemporary/pop. Kierstyn is also a talented improviser-- which she can do for hours on end in both classical and jazz styles. Because she has studied piano for over eighteen years, she has developed extremely impressive technicality from studying everything from Rachmaninoff to Bill Evans to Dream Theater. Furthermore, her performance experience has given her an innate talent of programming. She knows exactly which songs to choose for a certain gig; if you give her a genre, she can make a setlist that exactly suits the needs of your arrangement.

She has performed extensively in venues such as the Wigwam Resort, and the Ground Controls in Goodyear and in V
errado. She has played hundreds of events including weddings, memorials, private parties, festivals, and church fairs; Kierstyn was also the accompanist for all three choirs at her high school. She was the principal pianist for Northminster Presbyterian Church for four years and rocked the house as the pianist in the ASU Latin Jazz Combo for two.

Kierstyn just graduated summa cum laude with Bachelor's of Music in Composition at Arizona State University. She has studied with James DeMars, Rodney Rogers, and Kotoka Suzuki. Since attending college, she has been commissioned by Ironwood and Imagine Prep high schools, The ASU Barrett Choir, The Phoenix Art Museum, The ASU Art Museum, and Voices for the Voiceless. In 2014, she won the Four Seasons Women's Composers Competition, and her string quintet "The Monarch" was performed in September by their professional orchestra and her score for the play “Poseidon's Regret” received a nomination for a 2016 ariZoni Award!

Hello and Welcome!
My name is Sarah and I am honored you have chosen to look at my profile. Finding the right teacher is so important! I always try to make sure that I accommodate what is best for the student when I approach teaching. Now a bit about me! I graduated from Lees-McRae College in May 2017 with a BFA in musical theater and a minor in art and design. I know at a glance it may be overwhelming how many classes I teach. You see as Musical Theatre Major I had to learn all about dance, makeup, singing, acting, and all of the sub categories that go with it; not to mention with my minor in art and design I know my way around with a paint brush. Art, in all forms are has always been my way of expressing, feeling, and embracing life. I took an internship at the Arkansas Arts Center Children's Theatre and I had to learn ALL aspects of
theatre and work with kids every day.

I was training American Sign Language at Northern Virginia Community College back in 2012. In 2015 I studied under an ASL master from Gallaudet University. I have continued to further my knowledge of ASL every day. I was recently the ASL captain at work who helped make sure all signs were done correctly and expressed properly.

My goal is to help you learn what you are craving to know! I try to not charge too high for lessons, I know that this is something that is for fun and is not always a possibility so I try to keep it at a lowish price so that everyone has a chance to learn. I am very flexible to schedules. I am willing to have a regular time or switching it up weekly; I have students who travel for a living so they are always on a different time zone; no matter the obstacle I will make it work for you!
Something that is great to know about me is that I never stop training, pursuing growth and knowledge. I read books in these various fields to learn more and more, take master classes, and train with my own vocal coaches. I think art - on any platform, is a great way to get out of your head, free your mind, and open up yourself. So this can be for professional training, a hobby you always wanted to pursue, or a dream you wanted to chase after.

In my class with you, or you child, I will make an individualized lesson plan that focus around what skills you already have, what skills you aim to improve/gain, and how you learn. I am very familiar with the fact that we are ALL different, which means we will all learn DIFFERENTLY. I am willing to explain something in as many ways as one needs in order to understand. I like to think of my lessons as a “safe place” to explore, have fun, grow, and be okay with making mistakes. We will always start with the basics, understand the core of the craft - for example in singing that would be our vocal anatomy and how it all connects together. I use props to help make the concept more visual and graspable as well as diagrams. This is not something someone will pick up in one lesson, so don’t come in saying “I can’t”, you can, you just have to learn HOW. I will show you the how. Remember, this is a learning process, we must embrace each step of our growth.

Some background of how I came to do what I do:
I have been working professionally for theatres for five years now; which has had me living in various towns in NC, OH, AR, and traveling nationwide for tours. I have a lot of experience under my belt for my years. I began taking performance classes as young as age 2 when I started ballet, then I began singing in choir in third grade. I started being in awe of sign language when I saw an interpreter working her magic around age ten and I asked my mom for a sign language book. Expanding my knowledge is what I do for fun, so when you pick me you pick someone who is constantly growing and learning more which will ultimately benefit the student.

I teach a variety of classes that, for the most part, circle around the arts! Some of my classes include, but are not limited to: Acting, Child Acting, Improv Audition Prep, Various styles of “Singing” classes, Ear Training, Musical Theatre, Music Performance, Various “Art” classes, Facial Exercises (Which is great for singers, and those who speak a lot day to day to help relieve tension in the face), and more!
For an explanation on each class, I will be recording a video that describes them and posting that on here soon! There is a video trailer of me singing and dancing that is currently available. About Garry
My approach to music education can be summed up in this favorite quote by composer Robert Schumann - "It is music's lofty mission to shed light on the depths of the human heart".

I offer all aspects of music education including guitar, bass, ukulele, arrangers piano and recording technology and I promise accelerated results.

I am a an honor graduate of the prestigious Berklee College Of Music in Boston. During my studies there, I was awarded, for three consecutive years, high achievement scholarships.

At Berklee, I started my career in music education with being offered the position of Ear Training Laboratory Manager. Later, I put together an ensemble class for four guitars and rhythm section called 'The Baroque Jazz Quartet' which was added to the advanced electives offered by Berklee.

I'm also known for leading a workshop c
alled the "Music Of Life Seminar". This work originated out of my collaboration with cellist and Senior Lecturer in Public Leadership, Ronald A. Heifetz who is the co-founder of the Center for Public Leadership at Harvard University.

I've studied privately with world-class musicians, the likes of; Tuck Andress on guitar, Kit Walker on piano. Herb Pomeroy for arranging, Mike Gibbs for composition, Mick Goodrick on guitar (ECM recording artist), the legendary Lenny Breau on guitar, Kai Eckhardt on bass, and in my formative years, Jazz great Charlie Byrd, among others.

I have played key roles in public performances with such notables as; acclaimed actress and singer Jill Eikenberry, keyboardist Raphael of the ‘Music To Disappear in’ fame, Grammy Award winning pianist Laura Sullivan, new age singer Sophia, among others. I have also performed in notable venues on both the East and West coast such as the Angelico Hall and the Berklee Performance Center.

I have co-produced, with producer Wayne Wallace of Bon Vivant Productions (Machete' Ensemble and Pete Escovedo Orchestra), my own album of instrumental music through the label Delvian Records called “Motion” were I was joined by some top players from the music community.

I highly recommend guitar lessons with Gary Norman. Gary is a tremendously talented guitar player and an equally capable, creative and thoughtful teacher. His knowledge of music theory is outstanding – a testament to his graduate degree from the Berklee College of Music, one of the premier music colleges in the country. Additionally, he is very creative in his teaching methods as he tailors his lessons to the learning style of the student. For me, I required assistance with understanding the basic elements and timing of a composition before I could move on to the rhythm and strum patterns and ultimately the melody and words. Most importantly, Gary is patient and attentive which makes learning or mastering your guitar stress free. Overall, my lessons have been well worth the time and investment - I'm a much better and more informed player now that I have been lucky enough to study with Gary.

I have been playing playing guitar for a long time, was a music major in college and have played semi-professionally. I went to Garry for his high level of knowledge of jazz harmony and wasn’t disappointed. He broke down my questions into simple understandable terms and really cleared the fog for me.
