Do you want to understand your favorite anime show, movies or Japanese culture better? Do you want to learn to crack jokes in Japanese and win any crowd over? Would you like to do business in Japan and need someone who can not only teach you the language, but cultural differences and etiquette so you can win over any client?

Japanese and English are polar opposites in many ways.
Sentence structures are upside down. English is written horizontally left to right, but traditional Japanese is written vertically right to left.
Communicating can be difficult when what can be spoken directly in English has to be said in more subtle ways in Japanese, and this miscommunication can cause relationships to break down.

My passion is to help people cross cultural barriers and make new friends.
Learning a new language can build confidence and expand your mind in ways you never thought possible!

One of the signs that you have truly mastered a language is to understand the humor. I can ...

When trying to find a tutor, I did a lot of research and ended up picking Masaki as my teacher. I definitely made the right choice because he's great! I like how he stresses the importance of the fundamentals, including the correct pronunciation. His goal isn't just for your Japanese to be "good enough", he wants to make it so that you sound like a native speaker. He doesn't hesitate to correct me, but in a very kind way. I've booked 1-hour lessons with him, but because I learn so much in every class so far, the time always feels so short.

We can focus on all four skills; speaking, listening, reading, and writing, but if a student would like to focus on only speaking, we can certainly do that as well. We also talk about cultural aspects of Japan and cover the vocabularies related to the cultural aspects.

Sensei seems to really enjoy teaching. As both a native speaker and a longtime resident of the US, she is able to bridge the cultures in a way that many instructors would not be able to. I have been studying with her for over six months - both in a private and college setting - and I feel that I would be hard pressed to find a better teacher. In a college setting, she is very strict and covers a lot of material in a short period of time, and those who take her courses must be prepared to expend significant time and energy for success, but those who can keep up are well equipped to continue their studies with pretty much any other teacher or course.
Chris
Sensei Emi was patient, kind, and very thorough with her teaching. I started from knowing absolutely nothing about Japanese language or culture and now, having completed just 5 hours of lessons with her, I feel I have a solid foundation to build upon. Within our 5 hours we covered numbers, greetings, and almost all of the 46 basic hiragana. She was born and raised in Japan so it was lovely hearing about the culture and society from stories she lived through first hand. As I continue my education in Japanese I hope to return to her and continue to learn more. I highly recommend her as a teacher to anyone learning Japanese at any level.

Emi is the second private tutor that my company has had and she by far has been the best, hands-down. She is professional and experienced but she is also flexible with scheduling which is a necessity for business professionals who travel quite a bit for work.
The homework is not strenuous but is focused and important for success in her lessons. She also teaches at a nice pace but also is willing to work with you if you feel that you are falling behind. You can absolutely tell that Emi cares about her students and their progression with the language no matter their age and experience.

Ever since I discovered Dragon Ball Z on Toonami back in the early 2000's, I have come to develop a love of all things Japan, specifically anime and J-pop. My experience with learning Japanese started back when I started studying at home with my older brother back in 1999 or so, and then started studying Japanese at college, which culminated in the completion of a minor in Japanese as part of my BA. I have also visited Japan one time to visit my older brother who was teaching English over there at the time. I love Dragon Ball (among many, many other anime) and T.M. Revolution.

Hello! How is your learning going so far?

Since you are looking at my page, I’m guessing that you are looking for a teacher who can help you! If you are trying to learn how to speak Japanese, it's your lucky day!

In my lesson, we will be talking a lot!

Are you a shy person or a beginner? Don't worry! I will help you!

I believe that talking is the most effective and fastest way to learn a new language.
When I was in school, I was so bad at studying, but when I put myself in another country and forced myself only to speak English and not make any Japanese friends, my English skills improved in such a short amount of time.

I would like to use my effective learning experience to teach here.

Kids don't learn their native language by studying; they learn naturally by listening and speaking.

So we will be talking lots during our lessons. Of course, I do not expect you to speak perfect Japanese! I know that you will make lots of mistakes; we will have a safe learning ...

I am studying Japanese with Chiaki for more than 2 years on an other platform. So, when she told me that she decide to move here, I naturally supported her. Her class are fun. I am currently a very hard student but she never give up on me. She just adapted to give me the most interesting class. I nearly want to say that you shouldn't take her class because that makes my life harder to find a lesson time with her.
Troy
I've been taking lessons with Chiaki for over a year and it has been a lot of fun. There is a lot of talking in her lessons which makes it more interesting and easier to remember compared to reading from a textbook.

I have been taking Japanese lessons with Chiaki-san for about two years now. She is always prepared and enthusiastic at each lesson. Chiaki-san is friendly, funny and never makes you feel self conscious if you make an error. She is very interested in me being successful in learning Japanese.

"I started taking lessons about a month ago and so far it has been a very positive experience. My Japanese is at the intermediate and conversational level and I reached out to Sensei Yoshi to help me take my skills to a higher level. The teaching materials are very effective and Yoshi is very knowledgeable and supportive and is correcting my grammatical errors, which is exactly what I need. I signed up for 2 months' worth of lessons to start and will probably continue 3times a week for at least six months. I highly recommend Sensei Yoshi."

Japanese Honorifics: Formal & Informal Name Suffixes | TakeLessons

When learning to speak Japanese, you’ll come across suffixes used to address people called “honorifics.” Japanese honorifics are an important way to convey respect, formality, and friendship to those you interact with. Both formal and informal honorifics are common in Japanese, which is why every speaker needs to get the basic suffixes down. To an English speaker, the concept of honorifics may seem new, but the fact is, we already use terms, such as Miss, Mr., and Dr. as prefixes. But …

Learn Japanese Grammar: How to Use Japanese Adjectives

Verbs and nouns are vital to form a sentence, but if you want to add some color, you also need adjectives. Here, Ann Arbor, MI teacher Elaina R. shows you how to use Japanese adjectives...
