Bonnie M.

Rockaway Park, NY

About Bonnie

Flute Lessons in Rockaway Park

Are you learning an instrument at school, need some individual attention in order to reach your musical potential? Or do feel like you're moving faster than the other students, and want to reach for higher challenges? Or, are you already an advanced flutist, who would like to learn about the special technique of multiphonics?

Well, I'm good at all three!

Many times, a student will fall behind for the simple reason that their lips naturally blow high notes instead of low notes, or because they missed a simple but important detail regarding fingering
or reading notes. I am very good at catching students up. It's one of my favorite things to watch a student raise their confidence because they start achieving what was at first very difficult.

I'm also very good at challenging students to reach beyond the level of their peers. I work hard to view each student as an individual, and assess the sounds that they make in relationship to the next-higher level of flute-playing. As a result, my students tend to climb a bit quicker than their school program requires.

I'm experienced with ASD!

As a player, I've been featured at the United Nations, and I won a national flute competition in 2011. I earned my Bachelor's at the Crane School of Music, and my Masters at McGill University. I've performed at many important halls in NYC, including Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall, and this summer I will be performing--for the second time--as a soloist at the National Flute Association's Annual Convention, where flutists from all over the US convene to hear great flute-playing.

Flute
Amazing Player...Even Better Teacher.

From my first lesson with Bonnie, she opened me up to a new realm of musicianship and technique that I had never experienced before. She re-ignited a passion in my music that I was beginning to lose. I am forever grateful to her for this.

Bonnie is a hundred percent devoted to music, her playing and her teaching. One of the things I love most about her is that she seems to know everything about the flute, yet she is always striving to learn more. And if, every once in a while, there is something she doesn't know, she investigates. She finds an answer, contemplates it, and teaches me.

Bonnie is also a genuinely caring person who is entirely invested in her students. She often e-mails me after my lesson to tell me something that she had thought about relating to my lesson, proving that she is always thinking about ways to help me in my playing.

Bonnie continues to challenge me and encourage me in all my playing - she truly makes me feel that with enough practice and determination there is nothing I can't play. She even helped me attain a 100 on my all-state level piece this year. However, the score is less meaningful than the feeling I had after I performed that day. I knew that I was playing on a level I had never imagined - all due to Bonnie's inspiring me to always be better and her total confidence in me, not only as a flute player, but also as a musician.

Bonnie's musicianship and playing is unparalleled, her teaching style unique and engaging and, once you get to know her, she is quite the comedian. I am truly lucky to have her as my teacher.

Flute
An engaging and wonderful instructor

I have been extremely fortunate to have had Bonnie McAlvin teaching flute, piccolo and music theory to my older daughter for nine years and flute to my younger daughter for four. She is an enthusiastic and energetic teacher that inspires a great love of musicianship in her students. My older daughter is a first chair flutist in a wind ensemble and plays with a prestigious children's orchestra entirely due to the patient and thorough instruction she has received from Bonnie. It is a great blessing to have musically talented children but an even bigger blessing to have an instructor who can give them the skills and encouragement to achieve excellence. My older daughter is working towards attending a conservatory for college and the younger daughter fully expects to have music be part of her education going forward. This is entirely due to Bonnie's influence and guidance. We could not be more pleased. My girls love their lessons with Bonnie and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

His vast professional knowledge of the recording process along side his immense talent as a drummer has really helped me hone my skills as a producer. He has challenged me to think outside the box and his style of teaching is perfect for me. He gives you a task and tells you "Make it happen!". After its done he goes through your process step by step, showing you how the quickest and most professional way of achieving a task. Renato M. is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I have learned so much from his extensive experience in the music business and the knowledge he has from producing, composing and playing music all his life.

Being in a room with Renato is guaranteed learning and inspiration. His infinite passion for music is contagious, he makes sure you are learning but most importantly that you love what you're learning about.

I've had many music teachers before in my life but no one as complete as Renato. He comes from a performance background and started producing music at an early age. He knows about arrangement, music history, composing, recording, mixing and mastering, HE IS JUST THE TEACHER YOU WANT TO HAVE!

I take lessons in Logic Pro from Renato and he is extremely helpful and patient. In particular he gets great sound using really basic plug ins. He has an extremely professional studio with some great gear but he showed me how to get my mix sounding great with the minimalist set up I have at home. Highly recommended!

Matt is a great teacher with years of experience and a effective, fun instructional method. I started taking drum lessons with Matt almost a year ago, and he has helped me through so much! I've learned all the basic rudiments and rhythmic structures - the foundations of drumming - and I now play at a high intermediate-advanced level...all without any previous experience! Lessons are at a comfortable pace and I never feel pressured or bored. I bring my music assignments from school to Matt, and we go over them until I can play them perfectly. This helps a lot with my school performances, and I'm definitely the most confident player in band. Matt is always very kind and thoughtful, and he's always looking out for me to make sure I'm progressing and enjoying the music. I think he'd be a great teacher for anyone who wants to learn the drums. He definitely made a drummer out of me!

I've had Matt as my instructor for over 2 years, and I absolutely love his lessons! I'm always learning new things. He asks that you practice and work hard each week, but then we also play songs that I like too! He has a cool drum set at his house : )
I started with Matt when I got into 6th grade band, but I didn't really know how to play drums. He helped me learn music and helped me study and get ready for concerts. Now I play drums in marching band and jazz ensemble and I want to play in high school too.
Matt's a really good teacher : )

I could not have asked for a better beginner drum teacher! Matt G. is an outstanding instructor who uses patience and positive motivation to help new students get over their initial obstacles.
I certainly had a few to start! But with Matt's guidance and understanding as a helping hand, I found myself learning at a much quicker rate. Within a few lessons I had upgraded from playing on just one drum to playing on the full drum set. It was awesome : )
Matt is an excellent communicator who also possesses valuable insight into all things drum-related. He will address your problem areas and help fix them, and he even lets you choose your favorite songs to practice!
As you can see, I highly recommend Matt. He is a phenomenal instructor, a great personality, and a talented drummer; and he has the skills to help any student become great too!
