About Roberta

Flutist, Roberta M., is equally at home playing classical and new music. I Care If You Listen has extolled her “lush, full tones… even among the best professionals, not many flute players sound so compelling in a lower register.” Praising her “extreme adventurousness,” New York Concert Review said she “riveted with her performance, inspiring one to want a repeated hearing.” Roberta is a founding member of the Cadillac Moon Ensemble, a quartet of unusual instrumentation dedicated to commissioning and performing new works. To date, the group has commissioned over fifty pieces.

Roberta holds a
Bachelor of Music with highest honors from the University of Colorado at Boulder, a Master of Music from SUNY-Purchase College, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the City University of New York Graduate Center. In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I tailor my teaching to the needs of my individual students, who currently range from age 4 to adult, often adding improvisation and extended techniques to increase my students’ awareness of the potential of the flute as a channel for one’s creativity.

With over a decade of teaching and a doctorate in flute performance, I have extensive experience teaching flute lessons and recorder lessons to students from beginners to advanced. I teach at my studio in Brooklyn or can come to your home in New York City. I have previously taught in Colorado, Westchester, NY, and throughout New York City. I've been on faculty at The Harmony Program and the Denver Public School’s Saturday Music Program, where I taught beginning flute classes to public school children. I have given masterclasses at the University of Southern Maine and the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School, and have taught music classes at Purchase College and Hostos Community College.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a studio with music stands, flutes, recorders, an upright piano, and place for parents to wait. Street parking is available, and I'm less than a block from the subway.

Students are expected to bring their instrument, music, and a notebook.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my flute. Students need to have a music stand, music, a notebook, and a working instrument.

*** Specialties ***
I am well-versed in all areas of classical music, especially new music. My primary instrument is flute, but I also enjoy teaching beginner piano, recorder, and music theory.

I've taken three lessons with Roberta so far, and it's been awesome! I've played flute in middle and high school, but after taking a break through college I thought it'd be good to pick it back up as a hobby in the city. She's been really great with helping me improve my tone and has a lot of knowledge. I'm excited to build my repertoire with her!

Roberta is by far the best music teacher I’ve had. Before taking up the flute with her a year ago, I had learned to play two other instruments. Roberta is passionate about her art and has an impressive knowledge of music and teaching. She lets you progress at your own pace and is generous with praise. Rescheduling lesson times is never a problem for her and her studio is easy to get to by subway. Thanks to Roberta, learning the flute has been a very rewarding experience for me.

I took lessons with Frannie for more than ten years, starting at age 4 in an introduction to music class at the Brooklyn Music School. Through her I found not just a great love for music but a lens through which I discovered and learned about the world. With Frannie, once a week for nearly my entire childhood, I would learn to practice and work at a piece or phrase, or to interpret and have and opinion on music I played, or to play like I mean every note, and so on endlessly. Those skills were some of the earliest and most important lessons I had about how to live and enjoy my life, and art, and how to work hard, and care about what I do for my own sake and no one else's. And I don't believe just any teacher could have done that for me. Since moving on I have often felt a different excitement and deep understanding of music than many of the peers I met who have spent far more time than me studying music.

I'm still a musician. I graduated recently from Bard College with a degree in music and have since played onstage in a very successful off-broadway musical. I've played in many orchestras including with graduate & conservatory students at Bard, with the New York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and at LaGuardia High School (formerly Music & Art). I have moved on to other instruments, and forms of music, but I credit Frances not just for showing me how much I love music but for teaching me in many ways how to enjoy and get what I want from life. I can't recommend her enough.

My daughter Coco studied with Frances for a number of years. Without question Francis was the best music teacher Coco ever had, and she's had quite a few.
Francis is generous, creative, and inspiring to work with, she has the perfect balance of qualities that a music student needs. She's highly motivating and makes demands of her students which stretch them to achieve their full potential, yet she never pushes past their limits; Coco never felt stressed by her practice but always wanted to fulfill the expectation of excellence which Francis instilled in her. Francis always led by example and was kind, supportive, and a lot of fun to work with. She's also disciplined, reliable, and punctual. I give her the highest recommendation.

About Nino

I began studying piano and music theory when I was 5. My father was an accomplished musician (classical and folklore) who played great role in my accomplishment as a pianist and teacher

While studying in Music College, I took part in various festivals and competitions. I performed several piano concertos with symphonic orchestra. Some of them are: Mozart Piano Concerto No 20 in D minor, Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No 2 in G minor, Schumann Piano Concerto in A minor Op 54 pt. Parallel with my studies in College I gave piano lessons in classical music. I accomplished my studies with honors.

I got my MA from the Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA). My studies were focused on education administration and management. This helped me manage class in most efficient and effective way , plan lessons and develop curricula.

I would eagerly take students from all age groups and backgrounds and involve them in the most exciting process of self accomplishment.

Quotes and Recommendations of Students and Artists:

"Lana manages to be at the same time a true artist and musician, a sensitive vocalist and a highly skilled technician, which is an extremely rare quality. Even though she uses her voice to perfection to express subtle emotions, she never hesitate exploring the physical and technical aspect of it to then in return be able to express even more feelings. That makes her a fascinating performer as well as a rich and constructive teacher.
Very few people understand their body the way she does (through singing and dancing) and even fewer are willing to always improve this understanding."

Sophie Lair-Berreby, Voice Therapist / Vocal Coach, New York, NY, Dec. 2013

"Lana is an exceptional teacher of piano and voice! My ten year old daughter has been working with Lana for almost a year now and I couldn't be happier with our choice of instructor! My daughter's focus and interest in piano has skyrocketed and her singing voice has become much more controlled.
Lana is always timely to lessons and available to accommodate any changes in scheduling we need. Lana is truly proud of the improvement she sees in her students and there warm teaching style promotes a relationship with her students that makes them want to improve and become better musicians!
I would recommend Lana for anyone interested in improving their musical abilities!!!"

Lauren Garber, Mother of 10 year old daughter, New York, NY, Nov. 2013

"Lana is an all around amazing teacher, performer, and musician.
I have been working with her privately over the past year and my entire understanding of the voice and signing has been fundamentally improved beyond what I thought was possible.
I work playing jazz saxophone and flute and wanted to start singing to further develop my ear.
In our lessons, Lana fuses both western classical and jazz singing technique with Indian classical vocal tradition seamlessly into a neat package even while we work on simple pop melodies.
Her teaching style and skill set is truly a unique gift and certainly rare among voice teachers.
Lana maintains a brisk yet mindful pace and I am fully engaged throughout the entirety of each lesson.

Lana also has an incredible sense of rhythm, is a Tabla player and has studied with master Samir Chatterjee. Her sense of pitch is also unrivaled by most professional musicians and she can memorize and clearly project the most complicated of atonal jazz phrases. Furthermore, Lana plays the piano with great skill and grace both to accompany me during lessons and to accompany herself during performances.

I highly recommend studying with Lana for anyone interested in beginning or advanced study of the voice."
