Glynis D.

Long Beach, CA

I have been taking singing lessons since I was 7 years old and understand the importance of developing a solid technique. I majored in jazz voice in college but am versed in all styles. Singing to me is the expression of the soul and I love to help others develop their voice.

About Glynis

Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC, school for music vocations, then got her BA in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento. Sh
e is currently working on her Masters in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory inside of CSU Long Beach. While studying she is the Graduate Assistant for Christine Guter, and directs the 2nd vocal jazz ensemble, Jazz and Tonic, at the school.

My teaching philosophy is to have a safe, positive, fun, and effective learning environment for all of my students. I believe it is important to be a well rounded musician, therefore I love my students to have a solid understanding of what they are doing. I strongly encourage all of my students to learn theory along with piano or voice, so they understand what they are doing. Each student is unique, therefore each student has a different lesson plan. I do expect that my students will practice during the week in order to grow, since this helps them reach their goals. I do let students pick some of their own repertoire, since it is very important for them to be motivated during the week. I can teach from early Baroque music to modern day and everything in between. Music is expression, therefore I believe it is very important for my students to love what they are working on.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in my apartment with a keyboard.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can bring a keyboard, but it would be easier if they had one.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz voice, with a strong background in classical and musical theatre. I also specialize in piano, music theory, songwriting and arranging.

Glynis was absolutely fabulous as a piano teacher for my daughter. She is calm, sweet, prepared, and knowledgeable. Always prompt and never late. Her teaching style helped my daughter improve incredible amounts over two years. It also helps that she is flexible with scheduling, and she smells great too!

Glynis has made this experience exactly what I needed. As an adult who works full time and hasn't had a piano lesson in decades, I was initially unsure what to expect. Glynis masterfully assessed my ability, my available time and my goals, and she tailored a 20-lesson program perfectly suited for me. Most importantly, she pushes me when I need to be pushed, gives me a break when I am overwhelmed, and reminds me to focus on my original goals and motivation when I am being too hard on myself. I want piano to become a free-flowing outlet and stress-reliever, not another source of stress for my inner perfectionist. Glynis listens to what I need and lets her own love of music do the rest. She goes above and beyond the lesson book by adding instruction tips and tools--musical theory, demonstration, scale exercises, variations on simple pieces (e.g. jazz rhythms/beats), etc. I look forward to each lesson, and she makes me want to make time to practice between lessons so we can make the most of our time together. I am grateful to Glynis for all she has done and would highly recommend her to anyone wanting to learn piano at his/her own pace. I myself am about to sign-up for another batch of lessons, and wouldn't want them with anyone but Glynis.

About Pamela

My greatest passions are music and teaching . . . so teaching music is heaven for me! It’s my greatest joy to create a fun and creative environment so my students not only learn, but flourish!

Music and performing is fun and rewarding. Learning how to be excellent at it should be fun and rewarding too! I've been teaching voice, music and performance to people of all ages for over 14 years. As a singer I specialize in Pop, Country, R&B, Gospel, Contemporary Christian, Rock, Classical and Musical Theater. As a teacher, I teach and perform all styles comfortably . . . except Rap .
. . I'm not very good at rap . . . I can write rap, but don’t ask me to perform it for you. . . unless you're looking for comedy entertainment.

I was born with a natural ear for music and a love for singing and was placed in private piano and vocal lessons at age 7. From age 10 to present I have been a member of various singing groups: Concert Choir, Vocal Jazz, Chamber Singers, Church Choirs, Show Choirs, Pop, Country, R&B, Rock and Gospel Groups, special ensembles and hired caroling groups.

Another interesting aspect of being a singer is the private and public performance opportunities. Since 1985, I've had the privilege to be hired as a Professional/Paid Vocalist, singing at Weddings, Funerals, Conferences, and Special Events. I've also been privileged to be able contribute my vocals to multiple independent recording projects.

All of these experiences have blended together to help me teach from varying perspectives and approaches so that the technique and result is customized to each student’s needs.

*** Lesson Details ***

I specialize in training all genres for solo and group vocals. I teach ear training for the new beginner, refined technique for the more advanced; incorporating performance and confidence techniques.

I’m a practical, laid-back, and warm person who appreciates the differences in our learning styles and interests. However, I understand the importance of hard-work and structure so there will be a healthy balance of both!

The most important part of our lessons will be our first day. I begin by learning about YOU! At our first meeting, I want to learn what interests you, what you’re doing now, what you hope to be doing someday and then use that existing interest, coupled with published teaching materials (when appropriate and available), to help you learn what you need to learn to get where you want to be.

With consistency in attendance and practice, you will be amazed at your progress in 3 months time and beyond.

I look forward to teaching you!

Lynda A.

Long Beach, CA

Basic Voice Instruction

Lynda has studied voice with a few teachers over the years and also worked with other seasoned singer-songwriters on finding her voice through collaboration. She often uses warm-up exercises from Anne Peckham's The Contemporary Singer and elements of Speech Level singing technique which has a heavy emphasis on developing a full, smooth range through various repetitive vocal exercises and scales.

Every one has strong and weak ranges to their voice. With practice and attention, everyone can find their strong vocal ranges, as well as start to identify and work on expanding what is possible individually. Students interested in developing their voice should have an idea of what songs they want to learn and bring those to the lesson. Basic vocal technique can also be incorporated into piano lessons.

About Lynda

I've been a music instructor, performer and music producer for over 15 years. I understand the balance between learning the language of music through reading and music theory and how to balance that with creative freedom and expression. I look forward to working with you on achieving your musical goals.

Lessons offered: Piano (Beg - Adv), Flute (Beg - Adv), Basic Guitar, Vocal Coaching, Songwriting, Music Theory, Ear Training, Digital Audio & Music Production

More about Lynda:

Lynda A has been teaching piano and flute, performing and producing music in the Bay Area since 1999. She re
ceived her music degree from DePauw University in Indiana and a Recording Arts degree from Expression College for the Digital Arts in Emeryville, CA. Lynda attended the Stanford Jazz Workshop in 2008 and also studied guitar and the Speech Level Singing technique for two years. In the Spring of 2011 she completed the acclaimed Sound, Voice and Music Healing Certificate program at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco.

Lynda has taught privately at many music schools in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 15 years before recently relocating to Long Beach. She has developed and taught piano and audio production courses for Pyramind Audio Training School and Ex'pression College for the Digital Arts in Emeryville, CA. In addition, she writes music and audio tutorial articles and reviews for popular online education magazine, Ask Audio. Lynda was a contributing writer for a Pyramind School text book published by Alfred called Music Theory, Songwriting and the Piano™ in 2013.

After studying classical music for many years throughout college, Lynda craved to find another way to express herself through music. With this solid music education foundation, she was able to expand into improvising, composing and performing in the rich San Francisco Bay Area arts and music scene. Learning digital recording opened up a whole new world of musical possibilities and paved the way for years of musical experimentation and song-writing “ merging the acoustic with electronic. She has multiple album releases on a variety of international record labels and has performed extensively at clubs and festivals worldwide.

Lynda thrives on teaching solid fundamentals of her instruments while finding the unique musical passions, talents and motivations of all her students. This integrated approach has been successful in student retention over the years. Many of Lynda™s students have stayed in her studio for 5 years or more and made music a part of their life long journey.

Vocal training for students of any level of experience. Whether you would like to sing classical, jazz, pop, musical theatre, R&B, opera, country, gospel, folk or any other style, I would like to help you find your true voice and learn techniques that will help you sing powerfully, healthfully, and artfully in any genre. The voice is an instrument, and like any other it can be used to create beautiful music and to express the deepest emotion. My goal will be to help guide you in a direction that will bring you the most longevity, flexibility, and enjoyment from your voice.

About Eulis

--------------- I also teach Online via Skype or FaceTime! --------------------
Hello! Thanks for visiting my Takelessons profile. Let me start off by telling you a bit about myself:
I have been performing for over 20 years as a musician, acting since I was a small boy, and working consistently with public speaking, accent reduction and other presentational skills throughout my career. I started my musical education as a woodwind player and settled in to the wonderful world of singing over time. Music has opened me up to so many incredible opportunities from touring the world to performin
g in marvelous concert halls and working with some of today's most respected artists, as well as giving me the opportunity to expand my performance skills through acting in various plays, musicals, television, and film.

Performing has absolutely been my salvation! Throughout my life it has been a best friend and constant source of joy, and I share this gift with others so that it might help them to find the same joy. After more than 10 years of teaching, I have so many new experiences to draw from and share with my students. I've spent the last 8 years performing with Disney in Anaheim and abroad in their Tokyo Disney cast, and I must say that those experiences, vast and varied as they are, have given the word "performance" a new depth. I'm always excited to dive into every lesson with fresh ideas that will mesh well with many tried and tested teaching techniques.

Originally from Los Angeles, I now reside in Orange County and I'm especially proud to have expanded my studio to serving clients all over the world with online lessons via Skype and FaceTime! I get such joy from sharing my experiences with a diverse group of people from all walks of life.
If you're interested in learning more about my lesson style, feel free to contact me and I'd be happy to talk with you about a plan to help you reach your goals!

For Students of Voice: Teaching Style

Over the past several years I have focused much of my personal growth on developing my ears' ability to pick out and pinpoint vocal “placement”, resonance, subtleties of timbre, changes in pitch, breath support, air speed and flow, pronunciation and diction, and in general, the way in which all of these work together to create style. From these assessments, I work with the student’s particular needs to address each area individually and based on the learning style of each person.
To illustrate to the student their method as I see and hear it, as well as ways in which they might make changes to facilitate the ease of singing --be they changes of tessitura (range), length of phrase, tone color, the release of unnecessary tension etc.-- I make use of vocalise (vocal exercises), simile and metaphor, examples from recorded performances, demonstration, self assessment, and techniques to “trick” the voice into acting in a different way, in addition to videos, diagrams, and texts on anatomy and physiology. I feel that all of these tools provide a unique and personalized learning experience for each student.
