I loved Jen!

Jen made me feel very comfortable. I was very shy at first; had never really sang in front of anyone, but she made it very easy for me. I got everything I wanted from the lessons, learning how to sing properly breathing right with the correct posture. I'm glad I went with her as my instructor. I would definitely recommend her to others.

Vasiliy M.

Somerville, MA

About Vasiliy

Hello,
I am Vasiliy M, Boston University School of Music Alumnus (DMA in Composition). We dwell in Boston since Fall 2002; before that time , we lived in New York, where I studied Composition at Mannes College, The New School For Music. I received both BM, and MM degrees from Mannes in 1999, and 2001, respectively. Before an arrival to US, in 1994, I studied Jazz Performance, Electric Bass Major, and Classical Composition, at Moldova State Conservatory, from 1988 to 1993, respectively.
I was raised in the family, where music is an essential part of its daily life; my father, Gr
igoriy, before his retirement, was a military band trombone player, and, quite naturally, I was exposed to music, and encouraged by my parents to learn playing an instrument of my choice, from my early childhood.
My mother, Anisia Kondrat'ievna, possesses both beautiful vocal abilities and perfect pitch , although she has never had a chance to develop her natural gifts any further. But I have heard my mother singing, and these moments remain one of the most touching and impressive musical experiences, that I have ever received, and remember to this very day.
Only after a considerable life experiences, abound of trials and mistakes, at the age of twenty five, I have come to a clear realization, that music remains my greatest passion, and that I would have to become a professional musician. With help and support of friends and colleagues, I have entered Community College in Soroki city, Moldova Republic, where I have studied Choral Conducting for Amateurs. I have graduated from school in May of 1988, having written a few instrumental and vocal compositions of my own, and, quite unexpectedly for myself, was invited, that summer, to visit Moldova State Conservatory, with the prospect of audition for the Composition Major. After the meeting with the Chair of the Department, I was offered an opportunity to be accepted to the Master Degree Program in Composition, provided I will have completed two years of preliminary studies of Music Theory, Music Harmony/Voice Leading, and many other related disciplines.
Why do I bring all of these facts to this Essay? I know for the fact now, that I was not ready for what was awaiting ahead of me, back then. There was no way, that I could cope with the demands of Composition Program curriculum. But I have had love for music, that my parents have implemented in me throughout my childhood; I have had natural abilities, that Heavens supplied me with: and I have had a chance to make my dream a reality, providing I do everything that I will have to, during the following years of struggles and study.
The decision was made, and my studies have begun. I have come through every mistake, defeat, and mind-barriers imaginable, and if it would not be a continuous stream of professional help and support, that I have received from my numerous teachers, mentors, and professors, along the years of study, my goals could never be attained to any modest, but real degree.
Whenever I have a chance to teach, tutor, or assist other musicians with their study, my past experience always reminds me, that any person may experience some difficulties of various nature with the learning material, from time to time, and that those difficulties should be addressed by student's teacher with the highly individual approach, however time-and effort-consuming it may be. Patience and respect, in regard to the students, have become as important aspects of teaching to me, as those of discipline and professionalism.
My studies have come to an end; I see now, that the world of music is an endless entity, for it has no boundaries, and we all have to maintain our further progress, in order to move to our chosen destinations, and to help others with their own advancements.

Sincerely
Vasiliy M.

*** Lesson Details ***
I would be more than willing to assist my prospective students with their various musical endeavors, and people's willingness to either play music instruments, take voice lessons, or to study Music Theory/ Musicianship disciplines will serve us as a starting point for our work. Through the diligent preliminary talk we will discuss various aspects of interest that my students have developed in relation to music, so we could plan and design our future lessons according to an initial discussion. My job and responsibility will be to make an intelligent assessment of my students' natural abilities for the given subject of study, to create vigorous learning atmosphere during our meetings, and to give my students professional instructions to the best of my humble abilities, for the benefits of their musical , aesthetic, and personal development. I will encourage my students to learn as much as they can, at the given moment, but I will not ever attempt to exceed people's natural capabilities. Participation in Music with love and fun should be as rewarding and valuable to the music amateur, as professional performing career ( with its highly demanding standards) stands for classically trained musicians. During our study sessions, we will work upon the goals and tasks that we have discussed at the beginning of our meetings. My ultimate goal as a teacher was and will always be to help my students discover and bring forward their best creative potentials through the intensive musical studies and practice, and, at the same time, to favor heir initial interest's transformation into a deep, serious passion.

We have come to know Vasiliy as a very knowledgeable, patient, and dedicated teacher. My daughter was only 5 when she had her first piano lessons, and I was interested, most of all, in understanding whether her interest in music and the piano in a common room in our building was mature enough to begin music lessons - or not. Vasiliy gave me a very knowledgeable assessment of my daughter's readiness to begin studying music, and then went on to give her piano lessons that were right for her level and age. He definitely developed my daughter's eagerness to learn more, and left her looking forward very much to her weekly piano class. We can wholeheartedly recommend Vasily.

Daniel R.

Somerville, MA

About Daniel

I love to sing, and I love to teach. Private lessons are a great place for both. Whether you're already passionate about music, or just dipping your feet in the water, I can personalize lessons to meet your needs. For me, seeing a student grow as a musician is a reward in itself. But the biggest rewards should be yours: a stronger voice, a deeper understanding of music, a whole body involved in making music, an enjoyable effort, and a growing independence to handle musical and technical difficulties over time.

My background:
I am an experienced tenor vocalist, with over 11 years of pri
vate vocal study, a BA in music from Williams College, and further study in vocal pedagogy (how to teach voice) with a Longy professor. I sing currently with the Cantata Singers, Labyrinth Choir, Stämbandet, MetroWest Choral Artists, Terpsichore, . I have taught voice on faculty at Camp Encore/Coda, music composition with Classroom Cantatas, and private voice lessons out of my home studio, currently in Somerville. I've also taught for 2 after school programs and 3 summer camps. I've studied piano, both classical and jazz, for a total of 15 years. I have studied a variety of musical topics at college, from theory and composition to singing and conducting, to music technology, recording and engineering. I've performed and directed in diverse styles ranging from early music to broadway musicals, jazz to classic rock, American to Swedish.

*** Lesson Details ***
Your voice is simultaneously the most natural, intuitive instrument we know, and among the most complex. Every person's voice is unique, so lessons are not about fitting your voice to some imagined ideal. Rather, lessons are an opportunity to learn how to utilize your strengths, minimize your weaknesses, while maintaining your own unique sound.

You'll learn how to:
- Use your breath effectively to support your voice.
- Reduce tension, to keep your voice healthy and help your voice last longer.
- Make more sound with less muscle work, through resonance.
- Involve your whole body, to produce a fuller sound.
- Make good artistic choices, which reflect your own unique perspective.
...and much more, according to your goals.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio room with full weighted keyboard and seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can reliably reach students 5 miles away, traveling by bike or public transit depending on the student's location.

I prefer students to have a piano or keyboard, though we can work without one if necessary. My keyboard is too bulky to be carried around for each lesson. If a keyboard is not available, we can work without one, and I will bring a tuning fork for starting pitches.

*** Specialties ***
I sing in a variety of styles, including classical, broadway, and jazz, both sacred and secular, from around the world. I have extensive knowledge of music theory, and 15 years experience as a pianist. Although I do not currently teach piano, my ability to accompany vocalists during lessons is very helpful for students.

Voice Lessons

Daniel R is absolutely a terrific instructor. He provides clear, concise instructions. His use of voice exercises are extremely helpful and if not correctly done, he changes them for comfort. He does reuse the exercises the next visit so you, the student, are eventually able to grasp them comfortably. His skillful playing is terrific also, when improvising music. He is highly knowledgeable and very helpful.

Anastasia S.

Medford, MA

About Anastasia

After Anastasia’s Carnegie Hall Debut in 2006, the New York Concert Review wrote: "For a critic, hearing a new pianist with a truly warm, luscious tone is like breathing in the scent of jasmine blooming - a pleasure to be recalled again and again - and so I'm happy to report that from the first note she touched at her Weill Hall recital, Anastasia S. was a genuine pleasure to listen to. Every piece, every measure, every note - no matter how complex the texture, no matter how many strands of melody and accompaniment - was wrapped in a halo of golden tone..."

Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Anastasia
S. gave her first solo recital at the age of eleven. Ms. S. is a graduate of the Hochschule für Musik Würzburg, Germany, and holds a Master’s and a Doctorate degrees from The Hartt School at the University of Hartford.

In 2003 Anastasia received First Prize in the 14th International Piano Competition for Young Pianists in Rome, Italy, and was awarded a Special Prize. In year 2006 Ms. S. won the Puigcerda International Piano Competition in Spain. In the same year she recorded the complete works for piano and orchestra by Balakirev with the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra for NAXOS records. In 2008 Ms. S. received the “Outstanding Award”, which granted her a return engagement to give a second solo recital at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2010 Anastasia was awarded a Special Prize for the best interpretation of French composition at the International Piano Competition “Parnassos” in Mexico. Her solo recital in 2008 at the Myra Hess Concert Series in Chicago was broadcast live on WFMT Radio, in Internet, and on the TV-Station “Channel 25“; Anastasia was invited to play there again in 2011. Her career continues with numerous appearances as a soloist both in concertos with orchestra, in solo recitals, and in chamber music concerts in Ukraine, Germany, Macedonia, Italy, Switzerland, France, Russia, USA, and Japan. For the past 3 months I've been learning piano online with Anastasia. I was skeptical about online lessons at first but I decided to give it a shot. So far everything has been great I've learned a lot of technique and every lesson has been fantastic. Everyone is amazed at how much I've progressed in such a short span of time. I can say without a doubt that my progress wouldn't even compare if I had a different instructor. I would highly recommend her to anyone who seriously wants to learn piano and would also recommend her to anyone who wants to try online lessons!

I had Anastasia as my piano instructor and she was great. When I came to her it was the first time I ever touched a piano so it was very challenging, but she was very accommodating to my experience level. Not only did she teach me how to play but also the theory and history of the piano. I am planning on coming back to her as soon as I can, I recommend her to anyone.
