For young people and beginners I use the Alfreds piano books, they have great songs that students really like and they teach note reading gradually without a lot of tedious memorization. Young people and beginners are a specialty for me.
Advanced students can work on songs they choose and learn how to read chord charts, how to use music theory or how to improvise jazz if they like.
About John
I have been teaching young people and adults how to play musical instruments for over 20 years. A lot of my students are well on their way to a rewarding future with music, some as professionals and others as hobbyists. In addition to being a teacher, I am also a professional performer who has work

I'm not young, and I'm hard to teach music theory to, but he was patient, and is helping me figure a way into learning important stuff that I find kinda dry and not fun to practice. (I'm a good player, but music theory is very challenging to me.)

I have played guitar in a classic rock band for many years. I always wanted to learn how to play the piano, but never allocated the time to do so. When I finally decided to take piano lessons, I wanted to find a teacher who could start me off as a beginning student; someone who could teach me to sight read piano music and to help me develop my left & right hand piano skills and teach me proper technique from the get-go. Bijan Z. has done an excellent job of teaching me, and getting me sight reading & playing with both hands, right away. He is very knowledgeable and patient, and his positive attitude has encouraged me to practice regularly which has helped to keep me focused on my piano goals."

I came in as a low intermediate player and after only a few lessons I feel much more confident! My sight-reading and technique approved a great deal in a short amount of time."
