Enjoyed my first lesson with Rufus. Very easy going and down to earth guy. He is very knowledgeable and a great player as well. Thank you for everything
I have been teaching drums since 2003, and I start my students using The Drumset Musician, by Rick Mattingly and Rod Morgenstein. I also choose materials, from my extensive library, to address the needs of each individual. I am familiar with rock, country, blues, jazz, and world grooves, as well as marching band and orchestra. I teach the components of and purposes of voices within the set, proper grip, reading music, coordination, and feel. I also teach students how to analyze and map songs, so they can excel in a band setting. If a student is wanting to be in marching and symphonic bands, I can prepare them for those pursuits, as well. I have two sets in my studio, as well as abundant hand and auxiliary percussion instruments.
I have been playing the drum set in various bands since 2001. I have also been playing with the OKC Community Orchestra since 2009. I have played in symphonic and jazz bands and a percussion ensemble. I have taught a percussion class, private lessons, and I have been a full time music teacher in the OKC district. I have recorded in the studio also, and I enjoy doing a bit of my own production. Rocking on stage is my favorite activity! I can teach you how to be an integral part of a band and play along to your favorites. I enjoy bringing out the best in a student and teaching to his/her strengths. Let's run!
*** Lesson Details *** I am a very easygoing and patient teacher. I fully understand that the drum set requires a high level of coordination, and I am mindful of this while working with students. I will begin with proper gr
ip and stroke technique as well as the use of a metronome. I will teach the student to read rhythms and drum set notation. I know how to isolate difficult patterns, break them down into understandable parts, and reintegrate them into a piece. I like to use the music that a student enjoys to relate to the written music. I have found YouTube to be an indispensable tool for this, and my students have responded very well. I will work on snare drum technique as well, because it is the primary voice on the set, and the touch and nuance required to play it well relate to the set as well. I will tailor my instruction to suit the student's learning style and preferences. I want to make the learning fun, so I will help the student quickly gain the basic skills to play along with their favorite bands. This promotes musicality as well as solid time. It will also aid in transcription, which will come with development and is a valuable tool. I will use this in tandem with technique-building exercises to form a well rounded musician. I believe that a student should have a familiarity with his/her instrument, so we will also go over the anatomy and tuning of the set. Above all, music should be fun!
*** Studio Equipment *** Music room w/ drum set, hand drums, and seating for parents
*** Travel Equipment *** I have a practice pad, snare drum, and sticks. If a student wishes to have drum set lessons in his/her home, that instrument should be there. **Please note** I do have a drum set in my home.
*** Specialties *** For the drum set, I am the most experienced in rock, country, and bluegrass styles. I am comfortable with both Stevens and Burton grips for mallet instruments.

I love working with my students. Watching them succeed at what they do is what makes my day great. I always love to have a fun atmosphere around me and enjoy every minute it. Music is great for self expression a great Escape or an easy pass-time. It's nothing that should be stressful, but the opposite and that is what my lessons aim to do. Provide an educational, but fun and expressive learning experience to carry with you or your child throughout your lives.
The things students would expect from me in a lesson would be the concept of keeping time with a metronome. Playing grooves that the student enjoys to hear. Using rudiments which would build creativity in the students playing. Exercises that building the strength of the student's wrist . The basic concepts of reading sheet music . And mainly to have fun playing over songs the student loves listening to.

Drumming lessons with Jean Pierre are very good. He is a patient, and well mannered teacher and is very knowledgeable both academically and practically in music especially on the drums. I would definiatly recommend him if you wish to start drumming like Neil Peart.

An outstanding teacher with hands-on experience in what it means to be working in the music industry. Jean Pierre has delightedly helped me read some very hard music in a past concert we had together and also prepped me up for an audition with a foreign orchestra. Highly suggest!!!
"Mike was very patient with me, as I am not very coordinated, which helps I'm learning when playing the drums. He not only was able to demonstrate what he
wanted me to do, he could explain, even to a novice like myself, WHY I needed to do things a certain way. Great experience and I'm learning a lot!"
"Very enthusiastic, teaches in an easy manner that makes it simple to build off of earlier concepts...great with young kids as my son started with him at a
ge 10. My son loves working with him."
Kyler R. Kaufman
"Ray R. is what I would call a "Performance Teacher" to me. I am a guitarist and play with him to improve everything from rhythm to live performance skills
. Not only is Ray an absolute beast of a musician, he is a wonderful teacher. As many people may know, just because one is a good musician it doesn't necessarily mean you also know how to be an effective teacher. Ray is the best of both worlds! I have improved leagues since I started playing with him some months ago. I COULD NOT recommend his as a teacher enough."
"Kevin is a great teacher. Looking forward to the future !"
"Mike's an awesome drum teacher. Every lesson is fun and well thought out. I've also thought that the pacing and structure is perfect. He takes you beyond
learning HOW to play and teaches you WHEN and WHY to play the beats you're learning. Mike's a great drummer and a really fun guy to spend time with, I recommend his lessons!!"
Marcelo a.k.a Matx The Drummer
"I took lessons from Ray for about 4 months because I wanted to take my drumming skills to the next level. Ray's teaching method is unique and effective. I
t's simple as that!. After 2 lessons my band mates started noticing better chops, more control on the drum set (as far as dynamics) and tasteful fills. My hand/foot coordination has improved radically thanks to those exercises customized and developed by Ray that target the weak areas. At my first lesson, Ray and I discussed my short but demanding list of concepts that I wanted to work. He was able to understand all my concerns in a heartbeat and put together a teaching plan that covered more than what I was expecting. Needless to say that Ray is a humble person and a great drummer ( I stole a of of licks from him!). The studio is very neat and organized. It has technology and equipment that as a student you can use for free. Another advantage is that Ray's studio has two drum sets so the theory and the actual practice happen in real time. Also, the studio location is very convenience. If you are a drummer looking for effective drum lessons, any style, any level don't hesitate to contact Ray. You won't regret it!. He is an A+ drum instructor."
"I have been extremely fortunate to work with Joe over the past few years. On top of being one of the best people I have ever met in my life, he is also o
ne of the best musicians I have ever met. Although his musical forte is drums, his knowledge of other instruments contributes to provide an extremely well-rounded instructional approach.
Patient, versatile, and encouraging!
Go with Joe!!!"
"My daughter loves her drum lessons and is progressing very well. We are very satisfied with Murray and with TakeLessons.com."
"Dan is such a great guy and he has helped me transform my horrible banging into respectable drumming. He's funny and a patient teacher - highly recommend
