About Kelvin
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I str
ongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

I have played concerts all over the state of Illinois and I have taught many students throughout the years. I teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced players. Playing music takes a lot of time and patience as well as a lot of practice playing by yourself and in front of people. I am very relaxed and motivated to help my students learn and I will guide you through everything.

I would prefer that students bring their own guitars so that you would be more comfortable playing your own instrument, if you can

For creative people and makers, crafting is like going to the gym. You will find great fulfillment and a sense of accomplishment if you set aside time on a regular basis to nurture this very important part of what makes you who you are. Think of me like a personal trainer. I will encourage and inspire you while you develop your skills and express yourself through a variety of textile based media.

Private and group lessons or classes are provided in locations around the NYC area, in my space or via webcam. My focus is on providing an entertaining, relaxing and enjoyable experience as you learn a leisure time activity. I am extremely patient and detail oriented. When you let me know what you would like to learn or make, I will guide you through everything from selecting materials to fine tuning your technique. Take a lesson with me to fi
nd out why my students love me.

Teaching is a wonderful extension of my work as a professional crochet and knit designer and technical editor. A web search will reveal some of my published work over the last decade. As a craft teacher in the NYC area for over 8 years, I have worked with individuals, groups and classes of all ages and skill levels. Most of my experience focuses on working with older adults and people with special needs. Minors must have a supervising adult present. I do not work with groups of young children.

I have studied the history and mastered the skills to make and teach a vast variety of textile techniques. Please see my experience.

If you are using this site without the assistance of a TL Rep, I recommend the schedule as you go option. I often have openings in my calendar sooner than the site allows. After we make contact, we can choose the best date and time.

*** Lesson Details ***
Please let me know what you would like to learn or make before your lesson so that we may be fully prepared with any materials, tools, equipment, books or handouts. Students are expected to provide all their own tools and materials unless other arrangements are made.

Recommended duration for in-person lessons is 90 minutes. A surcharge may be added for travel outside of areas accessible by one MTA fare or expected travel time exceeding 90 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
Textile based crafts including crochet, knitting, embroidery, sewing, patchwork, plastic canvas, needlepoint, counted cross stitch, bobbin lace, historic textile and costume conservation and storage, and more.

I also love to research and develop craft projects for classes or master techniques students would like to learn.

Having taught Chinese Language Skills in the private sector, primary, secondary and college institutions for a number of years in China, has not only given me great confidence to teach in a classroom setting, but has inherently brought an instructor comfort that feels natural to me.
In addition, finding an opportunity where I can assist the kids, middle school and high school students and adults who love to learn Chinese college staff while maintaining my teaching proficiency in traditional or simplified Chinese characters is both welcome and rewarding to me.

I'm certain that my rich knowledge and years of experience in classroom practical application of Chinese Curriculum / Culture coupled with my love to teach make me a professional, responsible and patient teacher.

In addition, I can teach you Chinese in your location which
is no more than 10 miles away from Vista where I live. I can also teach you how to play badminton and cook delicious authentic Chinese food.

Ms. Qi is a very accessible and diligent teacher. My son can be difficult, but she found ways to quickly connect with him and get him to open up. She accommodated his need for assistance with his regular work, but encouraged us to "start again" with Chinese which is probably a good idea. Very much appreciate her experience and enthusiasm.

If you want to learn HOW to knit the best you can, and WHY the best way gives you the best result, it is Patty you want to learn from. She is able to scale her teaching to simplify and clarify, from first steps in yarn and needles to complex maneuvers, with excellent instinct for where the student's abilities currently lie, and to enhance the student's skill with immediately applicable takeaways. She teaches your knitting to soar. I am pumped and cannot wait for my next class!

I am a fashion samplemaker, and a devoted sewing teacher! My greatest joy is seeing my students master new skills, empower themselves through crafting their own style, and applying their learning throughout their lives. I maintain a blog on Tumblr where you can see some current and past fashion samplemaking work (as released by the designer themselves) as well as video tutorials that I've made.

While I am patient, my enthusiasm is palpable during each lesson. Each lesson is designed for maximum student engagement using a show-not-tell approach. Sewing is a hands-on enterprise! So, I do my best to empower each student with each lesson.

I found Kim after looking for someone to make me some custom athletic tank tops for the gym. After meeting her, I chose to learn how to sew instead, because she did a good job of making sewing make sense to me. To say I felt awkward my first time in a sewing store as a 6'6" bodybuilder the understatement of my life.

She took me from knowing nothing at all about sewing to being able to make my own work-out tops. Then she taught me how to make work shirts, and soon together we will start making my first pair of pants. (If you're as tall as I am, you know this is a very big deal.)

Friends and coworkers, for the first time, they're seeing me in clothes that fit my arms and shoulders properly and they ask where I got them. I feel really good about that, and I don't have rashes under my armpits from too-tight "XL" shirts.

If she can get my burly dopey butt to learn to sew, she can teach anyone.

She also has a stocked sewing studio. Most lessons I go there to learn, but I've also had her visit my place. I prefer to go there, if you need a button or fabric, she probably has it, and will let you buy muslin from her instead of taking a special trip to the Garment District to get it.
