I've sung leading roles with companies including Glimmerglass Opera, Caramoor Musical Festival, the Orchestra of St. Lukes and many, many others. My training is in a powerful classical technique that allows for natural, easy and flowing vocal production founded on relaxed, energized breath.
I believe in the extraordinary power of music to communicate, to inspire and, often, to heal. That belief inspires all my work.
My goal is to help you find the power to express express through singing your unique self. It doesn't matter whether your voice is professional quality or whether it's even "good" in the conventional sense. It's YOUR voice. It has its own sound and characteristics, its own particular beauty, and the world needs to hear you!
Whether you want to be a professional or audition for your school musical, NYSSMA, All-State chorus, college and conservatory, or whether
you just want to have fun and hit those high notes in the shower, I would love to help you.
I'm a classically trained leading soprano who has had the great good fortune to sing masterpieces with such companies as the Caramoor Music Festival, Glimmerglass Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. I also have undergraduate and master's degrees from Brown University and the Manhattan School of Music.
But don't let the fact that I'm an "opera singer" give you the wrong idea. Yes, strict classical training gives me in-depth understanding of how the human voice works, but I love and teach music of all genres. My students include professional opera singers, yes, but also rock and Broadway-style singers, college and conservatory students, teenagers singing in their school musicals, doing All-State chorus, or preparing for NYSSMA, as well as adults who are taking voice for the love of singing, the fun of the challenge and so they can join their local chorus or sound great on karaoke night.
Above all, the most important qualities I offer as a teacher are the simple human ones: understanding, patience, imagination, kindness, enthusiasm, respectfulness and absolute commitment to helping you meet your vocal goals.
*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most singers do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.
*** Specialties ***
For advanced classical singers I have a great depth of experience and wide knowledge of oratorio, opera, German lied and French, English and American art songs. I also have a specialized background in "performance practice" baroque and classical vocal ornamentation.
For all singers, I am also a superb acting coach!

What makes Nancy special as a voice teacher is her ability to understand her student.
I did not want to become a professional, I just wanted to be able to sing in my church choir and not sound
completely off. It turns out that there is a lot to singing which I had no knowledge of, the most important part is
being relaxed and breathing properly. With her help I am singing much better than I ever thought I could and singing with my choir with so much more confidence!
I highly recommend Nancy. She is patient (with me one often has to repeat segments over and over until they come out right), she
never gets upset and she knows how to encourage you when you do well. She is warm and funny and it is a pleasure to have her as a teacher and a coach.
Cleo D. August 18, 2014
Nancy is awesome! I'm so happy I have this opportunity to tell everyone what a really great person and teacher she is. She's really demanding (but in a nice way) and knows her stuff technically, but she's also really encouraging and kind and I feel like she "gets" her students.
I'm going into my junior year at Cornell where I'm studying pre-med, and believe it or not I really feel like voice lessons with Nancy helped me get here. I love singing, but never had much confidence. I started taking lessons with Nancy my senior year in high school and she helped me sing so much better than I ever thought i could. She was really supportive of my song-writing too. I ended up getting a good part in the school musical (I went to a super competitive high school too) and performing my own songs at a couple of local venues.
Then as part of my college applications she suggested that I include a recording of me performing some French art songs by Claude Debussy. Not that I was a classical singer or was even going to study music seriously in college, but my family is French and I really like the poetry of Paul Verlaine. Nancy introduced me to some cool Debussy settings of Verlaine poems. I thought the songs would be way too hard for me, but with Nancy's help I actually sang them really well and did a good recording that I think helped set me apart in my college applications.
Now when I come back home I always have a few lessons with Nancy. (I still compose and perform my own songs) And don't tell anyone, but she's a lot better than any of the voice teachers at Cornell! Not naming names of course.

I have been taking singing lessons from Nancy for about 3 months now.
Nancy's approach to teaching is very different. She does not try to fit you in a syllabus. She patiently understands what areas you need to focus on singing and where you are in singing and works with you towards achieving your singing goals.
with Me, I am OK in identifying pitch, but had trouble calming my nerves, and that came in the way of singing my high range notes.
Nancy helped Me on this area. She always spends time in making me relax with breathing exercises before singing. I cant believe how much progress i have made in three months.
would definitely recommend for any body who is at any level of singing and would like to sing better

Let's get started with the very basics of classical and operatic technique so meet student requirements for conservatory or to study privately with a formal opera teacher. That's right! Barbee is an excellent teacher. She is prompt, professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. From the beginning, my daughter felt comfortable with her. Barbee was nothing short of phenomenal, from the way she identified areas of weakness, to the helpful bits of advice. She pushed my daughter to do her best. I originally booked 5 lessons with Barbee, but we loved what she did for my daughter so much that we booked another five. We wish we could do more, but our hectic schedule won't allow it at this time. We will, however, keep Barbee in mind should time allow us to use her services again. Don't think twice about selecting Barbee for singing lessons!

No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.
Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.
OTHER LESSON INFORMATION
SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.
ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

"Helped me find my passion
In middle school, I really didn't have very much direction and I was afraid of going to high school. To make friends, I decided
to go out for one of the high school's audition choirs, and though I didn't make it into the elite choir, I made the women's choir. I was happy, but I was afraid to sing out even in front of the other girls in the choir. I didn't have any confidence in my voice and most of them knew how to read music and sight-sing. I didn't. I started taking lessons with Ms. Jenni in the fall of my freshman year in the hopes of catching up with the other girls and eventually auditioning into the elite choir before my senior year.
That was three years ago. I now read music and sight sing and have much more confidence in my voice. I made the elite choir at my school in the spring of my sophomore year-- and in my junior year we performed at the White House! Jenni has encouraged me to participate in competitions and summer music programs that have helped me grow even more. I am seriously considering majoring in music in college after I graduate in 2014.
Jenni has been such a wonderful teacher. She really "gets me" and her encouragement has helped me find my passion. She's always positive and helpful and treats each student like they are her only one. I just love her and I will miss her when I go to college--because without her I really don't know where I would have ended up."

"Excellent Opera Voice Coach!
I've been having lessons with Asuka since February of this year and it has been a wonderful experience. As a beginner with a
bsolutely no formal training in singing whatsoever, the whole process of learning to sing opera can seem like an extremely daunting task. She is encouraging and friendly, yet treats her art form with the thoroughness and respect it deserves. She really takes the time to explain proper technique throughout the entire process-- from things like maintaining proper support for your voice and more importantly how to sing opera without hurting yourself. Personally, she is helping me to find potential that I didn't think I had before. I feel very fortunate that I am able to have one on one sessions with someone of Asuka's caliber."

"Mark is a gifted voice teacher and I would highly recommend him for singers of all ability levels. I am a baritone who has an undergraduate degree in voca
l performance and has been singing classical music, including opera roles, for 13 years. I am singing a couple solo pieces this summer (one English art song and one African-American spiritual) and was looking for a voice teacher to help me check-in on my technique. I took four lessons with Mark from June to July 2015.
Mark has an incredibly warm style. I immediately felt comfortable singing in front of him and hearing his feedback. He immediately zoned in on my “ah” vowel, which was too covered/dark. Over the next few lessons, we continued to improve the vowel and work to better release the breath. In my experience, modifying one aspect of the technique often reveals other areas than need work as well. Mark patiently helped me identify these areas and he provided some excellent tools and techniques to improve my overall sound. Mark’s instruction was consistently clear—he skillfully combined metaphors to describe how the voice works with explanations of vocal physiology. I definitely feel more prepared to sing these solo pieces next week!
I highly recommend Mark as a teacher for both new and experienced singers. It’s clear that Mark has a strong command of the fundamentals of singing and would be an excellent teacher for someone who wants to build a solid foundation. Furthermore, Mark would be a great teacher for more experienced singers that want to return to vocal training or fine-tune an established technique."
