Daren was incredible with our first time violin player. He helped our son learn the basics and explore his interest in violin. After 5 lessons we were sold that our son would want to stick with learning violin.

Apart from being an exceptional violinist, Daren is friendly, personable and a great teacher. I had never played the violin before but he broke things down in a way that made sense to me. His tips and foundational instruction brought results by the end of just the first lesson. I'm excited to learn more!

I started with Jeff 3 weeks ago and am very happy with him & lessons. I started playing guitar off & on as a folkie in the 1960's, no lessons - learned by osmosis + a couple of songbooks with chord diagrams, played off & on, (mostly off). I retired in July 2014 (at 71) and promised myself I would really learn to play. He started by asking me to play the chords I knew, and what kinds of music I wanted to play, and started me off with basic strums etc. For me at least it is a good approach. We go at my pace and no pressure - + a lot of talk about life in America etc. Plan to continue with him and highly recommend him. (I'm the old guy in the picture)

Jeff is a great guitar teacher. He knows everything about the guitar and music theory. Whenever I have a question, Jeff always goes into great detail to explain everything to make I understand it well. I have been with Jeff for almost a year and my playing and understanding of the guitar has greatly improved. Jeff also has a great record collection. Thank you Jeff and see you next week for my lesson!

Bass Guitar
Jeff is the Man!

I took lessons from Jeff on and off for about 15yrs. I started off on the bass and then tried learning some guitar. I really had a great time learning how to play the bass from Jeff, he makes it really fun and relevant to your needs. Some days, I really wanted to learn a song I heard on the radio or from a favorite band, and he was instantly able to teach it to me. Jeff is a great guy and really knows how to teach guitar. I would definitely recommend taking lessons from Jeff. He will go at your pace, and you will have a blast learning how to play the guitar!

Sherry S.

Pasadena, CA

About Sherry

I have been a musician throughout my life; I began playing the piano at age 5, and then began studying the violin at age 10. I did my first Symphonic tour as a violinist throughout New Zealand and Australia when I was in high school, and eventually went on to college to earn my degree (BA in Biology) under full scholarship from the University Symphony as the 1st chair of the 2nd Violins.

After college, I studied voice informally at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Later, I entered the Mae Z. Orvis Vocal Competition at the University of Hawaii and won a scholarship to enter a degree
program in Vocal Performance. I then trained with the Young Artists Program with the Hawaii Opera Theatre. I have been a professional singer since 1998, and have performed at the Wassermusik Festival in Berlin in 2008, the Hawaii Opera Theatre, the Seattle Symphony Benaroya Concert Hall in 2012 and LA's renowned Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2012.

I have acted in musical theatre in productions of "The King and I," "Romance, Romance," "Chicago," and "BatBoy," amongst others. I speak Mandarin Chinese and have wide-ranging cultural understanding, having studied language abroad in China and Taiwan and lived in Hong Kong, Honolulu, New Jersey, Chicago, San Francisco and LA.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach both children and adults of all skill levels. I specialize in Classical singing/Opera, Broadway style singing, and also Karaoke singing/Microphone technique. I help people who are "tone-deaf" with pitch-matching, and to gain confidence singing in public.

I begin each voice and acting lesson with a warm-up to prepare the student for their lesson. Next, we do a series of exercises specially designed to help each individual develop their skill in a way that best fits them. We then work on a piece of their choice for the remainder of the lesson, perfecting their technique and helping them become performance ready. I teach with patience and fun because I feel that this is the key to achieving goals and inspiring a good habit of practice.

If you do not already have a song, or sheet music to bring in I can help you choose one during your first lesson. I also require that my students keep a practice journal to record their daily practice sessions. If possible, please bring a recording device of some sort so you can record your lessons. It is a huge help to be able to listen back on your lessons and to use them in your daily practice! No experience is necessary, that is what I'm here for!

Singing · In studio
I took voice lessons from Mary Ann at Groovin' On Music from 2007-2009, and they were worth every penny. I was a background singer in a worship team at church and I was shy to sing lead because I didn't know how to sing vibrato or navigate the falsetto break in my range. I had always wanted to take lessons as a kid but never was able to until adulthood. I was a bit nervous when I first came in, but Mary Ann put me at ease. She is a beautiful spirit who inspired me, challenged me, and made me laugh. She is not only amazingly talented and experienced, but she genuinely loves people and makes the lessons an enjoyable experience. Mary Ann definitely took my voice to the next level. Many people have commented on the difference in my voice and my confidence level before and after the lessons. I now sing lead, am at home with my vibrato and know how to use all the notes in my range. I would absolutely recommend Mary Ann as a voice coach for people of all ages!
