This is a weekly program with 30 minute TUTORING sessions or a full comprehensive course of 45 minutes per week. I use several learning enrichment programs and other supplemental programs that are age and grade appropriate. For tutoring, parent or teacher need to provide current classroom material. I love unlocking the mystery of reading through a variety of lovable characters, general games and computer games in bite sized increments that are comforting and exciting and not threatening, demeaning or discouraging.

Adult literacy is also available.

I am an avid reader myself, and I have experience with students who have dyslexia, ADHD, or for whom English is a second language, as well as students who may just need a little bit of extra practice/help.
I have a good sense of what aspects of reading are difficult for students, and often incorporate music, rhythm, rhyme, drama/acting, and humor, to help struggling readers.

Learning to read can be challenging in English. Our language, while beautiful, has as many unique characteristics as do our people! Since I have a secondary English minor, I've had long experience in reading, teaching and interacting with many levels of students.

Difficulty in reading can often be simply a translation problem. When that glitch is narrowed in on, and taken apart, the magic of words opens up!

I make sure to start with the ABC's for everyone. I ask each student about the hidden secrets that are in the ABC's. Just from this alone, they will learn something they did not know in just seconds. I make sure to teach my students how to learn. The goal is for them to become confident learners to be successful scholars. They need to be taught from A-Z.
Erratic teaching starts and finishes with confusion. I also start at the beginning with ESL students. I make sure they know the proper sounds of the letters and all the hidden secrets. Knowing the hidden secrets are needed because it helps them to understand the process of learning. I have increased students reading above grade level and my ESL students have gone to college, became confident speakers and/or have landed the job they wanted.

I met Sonya eight years ago and she worked with both of my daughters. I was amazed to see how well my girls increased in their Writing. They both struggled with this and when Sonya worked with them in English and Reading explaining the rules and how they work and not work everything else fell in place. Her teaching method starts from the letters in the alphabet. It's a must see!

Sonya has been assisting and teaching my son all year. We noticed the benefits as he has Advanced in Reading. Her patients to teach are impeccable. We look forward to working with her in the near future.

"Maurice is an outstanding educator, an educator that makes students feel capable and confident in accomplishing whatever academic goals they may have or struggle with. He puts all his focus on what students first need to learn in order to get to their goal. He's one of the most understanding educators I've had the pleasure of working with. His patience, regardless of the students difficulty on grasping the academic concept is astonishing. If a student isn't understanding one learning style, he'll try a different way until the student does."
