About Gail
I studied music from elementary school through high school, taking a break to have a family. After I volunteered to teach Kindergarten and first grade music at a school in Lakeside, I picked up my instruments and began to study again in earnest. Many hours of study, lessons and practice later, I am a better musician than I have ever been, and I've also gained a valuable perspective on teaching that I never could have had by simply being a musician.

I currently play viola with Equinox Quartet, playing Renaissance music up through the Baroque period.

My strengths lie in working with young children, helping them both understand music and love it. My goal for every student is to leave me having a strong understanding of theory, musicianship and desire to seek out more opportunities for growth. I work with each student to tailor a prog
ram specifically for their needs, from working through simple bowing mechanics issues to the psychology of performance. Each student has different challenges to overcome, and simply using a one-size fits all approach is not going to help them.

I pride myself in being flexible and available to to my students for questions, whenever they may need to ask them. I believe that you shouldn't have to wait for the next lesson to have the question answered that may just make the pieces start coming together a bit quicker for you.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson consists of checking student's progress, addressing any immediate issues and working on skill building.

OK, so those are the basics, but what happens is so much more than that! One student may have trouble hitting a C#, so we'll work on those. Another may have trouble relaxing, we might spend some time on breathing exercises to help with that. Still another might have a death grip on the neck of their instrument, so we'll do some exercises to help relax their hands.

My goal is to help students get well on their way to a lifetime love of learning and making music.

In 3-6 months, they should be:
* Reading music consistently at a level appropriate to their progress.
* Developing an understanding of rhythm and meter.
* Placing their fingers properly, and reliably for the most part.
* Developing correct posture and holding their instrument and bow in a relaxed manner that suits their body type and facilitates the freedom of movement required for great music.

My newbie (beginner with zero experience) son has been taking violin lessons via skype for almost 2 years now. I specifically was looking for a teacher who could meet us over the internet, considering I needed a break from the commute. Although I wasn't sure this could work, I gave it a shot...& I am SOOO glad I did! I love the flexibility for our lessons to be in the early morning before school, we could only do this online.

My son LOVES playing his violin! It's funny because he wanted to quit once or twice when he came upon new challenges, etc. Gail works patiently with him as he gains confidence, slowly but surely he has improved dramatically. She has customized his lessons perfectly to fit his needs which is what I was hoping for. Online accompaniment to his songs made it even more fun & we just started a fiddle book (my son's request) which he is enjoying enormously.

My son picks up his violin & plays on his own all the time, WOW! He sounds great, is learning good technique & theory, but most importantly he was given a chance to enjoy the learning process, to me this is priceless. You won't be disappointed with Gail, she is a GREAT teacher! So glad we found her!!!

Side note: In the beginning I was trying to figure out how to tune the violin for my son, & fingering.The snark tuner & the chinatera fingerboard sticker gave me some needed confidence that we could do this online.

Gail is a very good and kind violin teacher and was just perfect for my son's introduction to instrument. He really enjoyed the lessons and learning how to play each of the strings then putting them together in a song. It was a wonderful experience.

There are common issues for any serious pursuit of learning involving the guitar; right and left hand technique, fingerboard knowledge, chord knowledge, reading and interpretation.

I am interested in teaching you what you need and want to learn so that you achieve your dreams. Please note that I only take serious students who will practice at least 30 minutes every day or 35 a day 6 days a week at home. I would like you to keep a log of how much you practice. This will enable you to make progress through the curriculum as you will be a beginner for the first 3.3 years, an intermediate for the next 3.3 years, and then an advanced student for 3.3 years. Dr. Maureen Spranza, is a great music teacher, my son is taking piano classes with her and I'm very grateful with her, because she always take the extra time to make sure my kid is learning, my kid loves Mrs. Maureen because she is a great teacher but also she is a great human being, she really cares about her students. And she not only plays the piano, she plays all the instruments, I hope to see my son become a great musician thanks to the dedication that Maureen puts in his classes, my kid loves his piano classes, every time after clases he came home very exited to practice what he learned and al of this if because Dr. Maureen encourage him to be better in Avery class

Dr. Spranza is one of the best piano teachers in the Bay Area. My two daughters take weekly lessons with her. She encourages them and empowers them to do their best. She teaches them both theory and practicals. They have participated in an informal recital and are now registered to take part in the MTAC Certificate of Merit program.

As parents, we see a big improvement in our daughters' piano playing skills. They even practice on their own, without us telling them to. All thanks to Dr. Spranza.

Martina is very skilled at what she does, and she is an amazing teacher. She pointed out all of my strengths and weaknesses at the first lesson, and she always teaches at my pace and not her own, giving me the opportunity to completely learn something before moving on to more difficult things. She is overall a very friendly person who you will feel incredibly comfortable to be around, and she always does the best job that she can to teach me every single lesson. I look forward to our lessons every week, and I am simply amazed by how much I am progressing under her guidance.

I first met Alex in June 2016 as my summer flute instructor at Columbus School of Music and Dance. I wish I could take more classes with him, because he is one of the best teachers I've ever met. In the short time he taught me, he showed me the principal techniques for getting the greatest sound out of the flute and (most importantly) encouraged excellence. He saw potential in me and believed I could do great things with my instrument. He makes you feel at-ease and really sets the tone for an open, deep-thinking environment (which is perfect for analyzing music). I personally believe that Alex White is the epitome of what a wonderful teacher should be and any student would be lucky to have him.

I have worked professionally with Alex since 2006. In addition to being a very kind person, he is a superior flutist able to play anything he is given well. He lives to play and practice. He is also an excellent conductor, an entertaining vocalist, and drum major for the band. He is a deep thinker and will really help you find the techniques and skills that are inside of you. Alex White's ability to conduct a full band rehearsal matches that of most senior band directors. He can pull music out of us we didn't realize we had. He has a natural gift but doesn't take it for granted. He works hard to improve his skill every day.

**** MY TEACHING STYLE ****

My teaching style is often referred to as laid-back, gentle, informative, and very supportive. My focus is on enrichment, encouragement, and results. I don't work with “one-size-fits-all” methods. Each lesson is customized to make the most of each student's own
unique abilities, limitations, preferences, and interests. Whether students prefer, or do better, with traditional materials, playing/singing along with their favorite recordings, improvisation, or anything in between, I am more than happy to accommodate and bring out each student’s best!

I teach real music -- students begin playing music they love almost from day-one. For example, many of my piano and guitar students pride themselves on learning to play every song on Beatles One ... playing right along with the CD! Reading, playing by ear, improvisation (jamming), singing while you play ... there are so many ways to play and avenues to explore in music.

**** MY STUDIO ****

My studio is spacious (very spacious – no cubicles here!), well-appointed, and very quiet. Unlike music stores and multi-lesson facilities, there are no other lessons on the premises, no drummer going crazy on the other side of the wall. This means students can concentrate better and learn faster. There is also plenty of room for parents and siblings who may wish to sit in on lessons.

**** STYLES / GENRES ****

I believe that students make the most progress learning music they love and I am very happy to teach every student the style of music he or she loves most.

My most requested genres are: pop, rock, country, blues, film/television, classic rock, jazz, and classical. Some students arrive knowing exactly what they want, but most are happy to explore various styles that interest them in search of the perfect fit. It is not at all uncommon for a student to spend part of their lesson polishing up a Beethoven piece or jazz standard, then finish up playing the chords to “Hotel California” along with the CD. Another student might start off their lesson learning a Taylor Swift hit, then move over to doing some blues improvisation. Variety is a wonderful thing and it is highly encouraged.

**** MY STUDENTS ****

Over the years, I have taught students from four years old to eighty-somethings. I’ve taught absolute beginners (most of my students start from square-one), hobbyists, seasoned professionals, even a Grammy nominee and a Grammy winner! Many of my young students have gone on to perform in school bands / jazz bands and/or professionally. In all cases, they acquire a skill that will last for a lifetime and provide joy, enrichment, and satisfaction.

Music is my life's purpose and I am committed to helping anyone and everyone I can to reach their musical potential. Whether that is as a hobby, an experience or fulfilling their own life's purpose.

From 2013-2015 I taught group music classes through Soli Encore in Orange County, CA, in violin, guitar and K-2 creative music (Orff-based instruction with singing, xylophone, hand percussion and flutophone). The last two years of that position I managed the entire program including hiring teachers, writing curriculum, and teaching classes myself. I had also consistently held private violin, viola, and guitar students. In both violin and viola I saw my students move up chairs in their orchestras and excel in local, district and state honor orchestras. I sent students to great schools for music like Orange County School of the Arts and Ne
w England Conservatory.

As for my performance career, I have committed to always being a member of an orchestra, band or performing group of some sort because it's my passion and I endeavor to teach from personal experience. Over my last ten years in SoCal I performed with several groups including the Blackbird Music Project, Montage Orchestra and Symphony Irvine. My last year concluded my position as Principal viola of the Dana Point Symphony for four seasons. I was in two bands during my college years. With Galanis I was a part of several Western U.S. tours that took us through California, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana. I have had the privilege of working with artists such as violinist Anne Marie Calhoun, Jimmy Hopper, Andy Grammer and Stevie Nicks. Some of the larger productions I have been a part of include appearances on TV shows like Melrose Place and the Bachelorette, and performances for former President G.W. Bush and at the Governor's Ball for the Academy Awards.

My performance career continues to grow here on the East Coast, where I have lived since August 2015. I have been a member of the McLean Orchestra and have been added to rosters for the Alexandria Symphony, Arlington Philharmonic and Washington Sinfonietta. I currently hold a Bachelor's of Music in Viola Performance from Azusa Pacific University where I studied with Robert Becker, founder of the American String Quartet with a BM and MM in Viola Performance from Juilliard. I am now enrolled as a graduate assistant for my Master's of Music in Viola Performance at the University of Delaware.

When I'm not making music I'm running far, studying nutrition, cooking or spending time with my beloved friends and family!

Junewon Choi has been performing very actively nationally and internationally. He was a finalist of Wilson Center Guitar Competition in 2016. As a leader of ‘June Trio’, awarded Research Enhancement Funds from Michigan State University, he performed in Bucharest, Romania with an invitation for a semi-finalist of International Bucharest Jazz Competition 2015. In 2014, he also played at National Academy For the Performing Arts in Trinidad and Tobago.
While he was pursuing his Master of Music Degree in Jazz Studies at Michigan State University, he served as a Teaching Assistant, and he was a member of Bebop-Spartan, the Jazz Orchestra I, directed by Rodney Whitaker. He played and recorded worldly renowned jazz musicians, such as Joe Hunt, Christian McBride, Jeff Hamilton, Antonio Hart, Jon Faddis, Mark Turner, Ben Street, and Peter Bernste
in to name a few.
Ever since he started to form his own group to play for the public, trio has been his most favorite ensemble. He played with his trio many times at different venue in Boston, while he was attending Berklee College of Music. Also he was a featured jazz artist at Club Bohemia, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
As a sideman, he played and recorded many times in Boston, Lansing as well as South Korea. When MSU Spartan Jazz Trombone Group was a winner of ITA, Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition in 2014 he was the rhythm section.
Junewon Choi is not only fascinated by jazz guitar playing but also jazz harmony, arranging, and composing. “Isn’t It Love”, one of his composition has been released by recording of New York City based jazz guitarist, Peter Bernstein in 2012.
Currently, he plays guitar with Shekinah Worship Band every Sunday at Sa-Rang Comunity Church in Anaheim, CA, while he is working on his debut album by composing, arranging, and rehearsing with his trio.
