About Mekel

I have eight years of experience with guitar, piano and a few years with violin. Just a few years ago I was in a band and I thought my guitar would be my main instrument forever! But luckily, I fell in love with the violin. With hours and hours of practicing every day I was able to earn the princip

Hey, y'all! Okay, I really can't say that I have a charming southern accent, but I can say that I have lived in Georgia my whole life! ;)

I started violin lessons at age 5, piano at 6, and music theory at 7. I loved music so much that I later went on to earn a B.A. in music from North Georgia College and State University, followed by an M.M. in violin performance from University of Georgia.

I've had the privilege of teaching music for 18 years now (3 of those at University of North Georgia), and I love it! It's incredibly rewarding to watch students start from scratch, gradually reaching fluency in the language of musical technique and expression. Every professional was once a beginner! I'd be so grateful for the opportunity to help you reach your musical goals.

My teaching style is fun and relaxed! I focus first and foremost on teaching the enjoyment of music, and let everything else develop from there.

During lessons I teach sheet music literacy, violin skills and techniques, music theory, and composition. Sheet music is an important part of playing the violin, so we begin working with it from day one. While teaching new skills and techniques I love to explain why we do things the way we do, and give examples of how it can improve one's sound. This helps make the "boring stuff" much more interesting and fun. In addition, I like to include theory and composition because they wonderfully round out students' musicianship. Theory is key to understanding why music works the way it does, and enables students to collaborate with others in a multitude of settings. Composition is often my students' favorite part of the lesson, because it empowers them and allows them to explore and be creative, while building confidence and technical skills.

Annabel is a classicly trained violinist who gradually became a musician as she learned what it meant to be one. We all have a multitude of senses that can be tuned to become a musician: a channel for our chosen instrument. Musicians aim to cultivate talent in music as a gift to give oneself and others. They feel the freedom-- sufficient technical facility and intuitive artistry-- to express whatever voice speaks in each moment. Annabel has relearned as an experienced violinist that we do well to view playing from a biodynamic perspective. That means extending the concept of instrument beyond the violin to the body-mind. Giving attention to subtle movements and holding patterns can make hours of practice unnecessary. This is part of a joyful, freeing approach wherein more of practice becomes play as challenges become gateways to greater fluency. Annabel believes that in this way, violinists can enjoy playing to their fullest capacity at any level.
While students are encouraged to ...

"I do not have ear for music nor have any prior knowledge on music. I was very skeptical so I was not really committed to it. But Anna understood my limitation and motivated me to see music in different way and now I love it. I have been taking classes with her now more than six months and hands down best Violin teacher. She is very patient, motivating, funny and most of all very talented and knows how to make music stick for non-musical people like me.
Thank you so much for introducing me to violin in a right way that now I like to play for playing."

"The teacher was amazing. My 8 year old kept telling me she didn't want to play violin anymore. I figured it was because of the instructor and I was right. Phoebe was on time, professional, educated, and super fun. I literally never heard my daughter play so smoothly. And when she left my girl gave her two thumbs up and did cartwheels and said she couldn't wait for her next lesson. We made the best choice with Phoebe. She's a really sweet girl and is extremely patient. Throughly satisfied and look forward to a million more fruitful learning experiences :)"
