Fingers or a pick? Why did you you choose electric bass over the guitar? I’ll help you understand the role of a bass guitar and show you basic techniques to those catchy fills that have been remembered for decades.

Beginner level: technique and positioning is paramount. I prefer to use fingers over a pick to begin with but it is purely your choice. I will start from one position (left hand) and work with the right amount of finger strength (both hands), timing of notes, and coordination. A plethora of popular songs can be played in just one spot on the fret!

Next, I will incorporate some simple theory and show you how to move around the fretboard comfortably by shifting or sliding and really emphasize cooperation with the right hand. You want to make those notes shine and “mean it”. You are the band’s “anchor” and you Must listen to your bandmates (even if you are just jamming to your favorite songs).

My goal is to make you feel comfortable in your role and get the ...

I appreciate Scott's relaxed style. He is able to make a realistic practice schedule for me to fit in to my work week. It is obvious he is very knowledgeable and has given me a lot of good tips so far. I would definitely recommend Scott.

I took weekly electric guitar lessons with Scott from 2004 to 2012. He is without a doubt an extremely talented, enthusiastic, and compassionate teacher. Whether he was helping me learn basic chords or teaching me complicated songs, Scott never wavered in his dedication to teaching. Over the eight years as his student, Scott gave constructive criticism in a courteous manner. He was on time, inquisitive about the songs and music I was listening to, and ended lesson with new material for me to practice. I wholeheartedly recommend Scott to any aspiring guitar student.

I teach both electric and upright bass. My focus is on a healthy and sustainable technique, ensuring fluidity in your playing with minimal strain on your body. Whether you're playing folk, reggae, funk, or metal; fingerstyle, or with a pick, I can help you sound better, play longer, more imaginatively, and more comfortably, and have more fun.

I've been playing folk, country, and rock guitar since 1995, and played upright bass, banjo, and rhythm guitar in gigging old-time bands for ten years. I currently play bass and sing in a cover band, and release original music and collaborations on major streaming platforms.

About Dan

I've been playing music since I was five years old (so, over 35 years now), beginning my 'stage career' as a saxophonist in school bands, then playing guitars, keyboards, accordions, mandolins, banjo, and bass in a variety of live acts throughout my adult life. I've made (as of January 2020) 16

Being able to navigate through chord progressions is also key so an understanding of theory and its applications on the neck will receieve a lot of focus. For the past seven years, my performance career has primarily focused on Cuban Timba. In addition to my real-world experience with the genre, I have held multiple lectures and seminars on the style at universities across New York State as well as online. I feel extremely fortunate to be able to participate in this wonderful genre in such an extensive way, something few outsiders have been able to do. For that reason I am especially passionate about sharing the knowledge I've acquired with others.

I also specialize in jazz improvisation and other styles of "world music" including Afro-Peruvian, Venezuelan and even some styles from southeastern Europe.

As a teacher I emphasize technique, reading, rhythm and creating an organized practice routine. I'm also a strong advocate of transcription, especially of repertoire, which key when studying any style of music.

I also hope to inspire my students to become independent in following there own musical curiosity, regardless of what ...

Ian learned my band's music and hit the stage without rehearsal!

It could have been his deep knowledge of Latin music and musical training, or both. Either way, you are in for a treat of you get to work with Ian. He has the discipline, great sound and a friendly attitude. A very thorough and grounded musician.
Mario
Ian is a kind and patient teacher, a master of his craft and knows how to communicate musical concepts in a clear manner. I studied Cuban/latin music styles with him as well as theory and technique on the bass guitar. In regards to my latin music focus, the information presented is straight from the source, and he has a wealth of material to dig into. He provided the tools and perspective of a real working musician and tailored my lessons to my level of skill.
Nathan
Ian Stewart is rare among artists: in addition to being a master of his craft, he is also a great teacher. While his knowledge of music is vast and deep, he excels at breaking information down for the student and teaching the aspiring musician how to practice effectively and efficiently. He emphasizes the importance of self-assessment so that, ultimately, the students can teach themselves.
I recommend Ian Stewart highly.

"So glad to have Jonathan as my teacher

I am a busy professional in my 50s that wanted to learn how to play the electric bass. After searching the web for in home lessons I found Jonathan Greenberg.
Jonathan is an absolute professional with the ability to quickly connect with a student at their level. I have already learned an amazing amount in 4 weeks and have confidence that Jonathan will have me playing at a high level in a very short time period.
He gives me "homework" and he follows up to determine if I am staying with it.
A great mannerism and teaching style make Jonathan a teacher well worth asking for.

"My favorite night of the week is what I call "guitar night," and it is my favorite because Ahmad is the best teacher I've had in just about anything (sorry, erstwhile college professors). The bass guitar can be intimidating, especially if you've put it off until your 30s like this gal. Ahmad makes the whole thing cake.. . I was playing a song by my second lesson. When I am occasionally downtrodden by what I feel like is the futility of a guitar in my grubby, fat hands, Ahmad, like a sensei, helps build me back up, developing my skill and pointing out what is, in fact, a burgeoning talent. It takes time. It takes practice. And I feel lucky to have chosen Ahmad as my instructor for his easy nature, graciousness, and what you can tell is a true love for the guitar that is infectious. Put it this way: I feel like there isn't anybody he can't teach. Even my significant other has remarked upon the tremendous progress I have made and the increasing confidence in my playing. It's a pleasure to be his student. I might even say an honor."
