American Sign Language Lessons

American Sign Language (ASL) is the language used by the Deaf Community in the United States. However, you do not need to be hearing impaired to benefit from learning ASL!

Developed by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc in the nineteenth century, ASL is now the fourth-most common language studied in colleges across the country.

ASL is primarily, but not exclusively, used to communicate with deaf friends, family members, neighbors, and other members of the Deaf Community. Signing up for American Sign Language lessons with us opens doors for both yourself and others as you learn to communicate with your hands, face, and body instead of your voice.

FAQ

How long does it take to learn ASL?

You will need anywhere from a few months to several years to learn American Sign Language, depending on your goals. As with any language, basic key phrases and simple communication come relatively quickly, but fluency takes much longer to achieve. If your aim is to become a real-time interpreter, then it will take several years to develop the skills and fluency necessary. Meanwhile, exchanging pleasantries with a friend or neighbor will come much faster.

The guidance of a certified American Sign Language tutor near you can help you gain skills more quickly and easily than self-guided study, especially to capture the nuance and grace of the language. At TakeLessons, we make it easy to find a tutor to move at your pace as you learn ASL.

What countries use ASL?

American Sign Language is largely used in the United States and western provinces of Canada. Related languages are used in West Africa and Southeast Asia, though they vary based on needed vocabulary. There are also dialects of ASL, just as there are with other languages. Slang, accents, sign choice, and rhythm are different depending on region, even within the United States.

There is a great diversity in signed languages worldwide, including some of the most common: Chinese Sign Language (CSL or ZGS), Brazilian Sign Language, and Indo-Pakistani Sign Language. Other languages in English-speaking countries include British Sign Language (BSL), Auslan (used in Australia), New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), and Irish Sign Language (ISL).

How is ASL different from English?

American Sign Language is a natural language with its own syntax, vocabulary, and grammar. As such, it is distinct from English and should be considered a separate language. Acquiring mastery of ASL is comparable to other languages in terms of time and effort.

Working with a mentor to learn ASL is one of the best ways to establish a firm foundation and build toward fluency. One-on-one instruction tailored to your needs and skill level will help you gain knowledge and confidence.
