I can teach ROCK drumming and Percussion techniques. As a Composer and Professional Musician (guitar/saxophone) I also have a comprehensive understanding of poly-rhythmic studies and phrasing.

About Benjamin
Hello Future Students!

Whether you want to pursue a Musical Career or simply learn how to Play your Favorite Tunes for friends and family, I am here as your Teacher and Guide. I teach at my own home, at the Student's home or through the use of Skype.

I am originally from Ann Arbor. I spent much of this century living in NYC and prior to that I lived in Chicago. Those experiences vastly helped me develop Networking, Performance and Teaching experience. I now live in southwest Detroit near River Rouge.

As a Father of four, I have had the joy in teaching my own children Guitar, Saxophone, Songwriting, Composition and Keyboard. As a parent I have found that Patience and Encouragement is often the best form of support.

It has been proven that learning Music helps develop intuition, self-awareness, and social skills as well as imp
rove in other subjects not directly related to the arts such as Mathematics and Science.

One of the most important aspects of playing Music is being able to Play by Ear. This has been a priceless gift that I was born with and have developed throughout my life. I encourage all musicians, young and old, to do the same. The use of simple Rhythmic Dictation and Ear Training exercises can do wonders for "picking out" Beats and Harmonies no matter what Genre we are interested in.

I attended music courses at The Boston School of Contemporary Music and Thomas Jefferson College (MI). I have a BA at Columbia College Chicago double majoring in Music Composition and English .

My band THIRD BORDER's "Sun of Water; Sea of Light" was selected to be nominated for the Grammy's as The Best Alternative Album of the Year in 2006. On this record, I played Guitar, Saxophone, sang Lead Vocal and wrote all the Songs. If you are a Songwriter, we can polish up your approach.

As a Composer, I have done Sound Design for Film, Dance, Spoken Word and Multi-media Performance - most notably with renowned poet Anne Carson and former members of The Merce Cunningham Dance Co. I also formed and composed two symphonies for my 12-member saxophone orchestra in NYC. Currently, I am rehearsing new work with a Detroit-based multiinstrumental orchestra.

I hope to talk to you soon!
Benjamin

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is relaxed with a forte on Patience and Encouragement. Though I have specific expectations on what needs to be learned, I gear each lesson towards the student's wishes and their personal direction in Creativity. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student, I can guide you wherever you are headed!

For Guitar (acoustic or electric), you will learn the fundamentals of Music Theory, Chord Structure, varied Strumming and Picking Techniques, and Scale Positions to travel from one part of the neck to the other. Any song you wish to learn, I can teach!

For Saxophone, you will learn proper Embouchure technique, Notation, Music Theory, and Scale Patterns for improvisation. Whether you are interested in a Classical, Blues, Funk or Jazz approach, I can help you find your own sound that is both personal and professional.

I teach 2nd year Piano and Drums/Percussion directing you into Intermediate level.

For those leaning toward the experimental genres, I am well-versed in the use of Electronics. Much can be accomplished with my lessons on Sound-Scape Improvisation either as 1 on 1 or Group Workshops.

*** Studio Equipment ***
At Home Studio: music stands, metronome, guitar amps, electric and acoustic guitars, guitar tablature, staff music paper, a scanner for weekly homework. I can also record and send MP3s of our lessons to review at home if you wish.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students will need their own instrument, a mutually chosen music book to learn from, a metronome, and hopefully easy access to a keyboard (very helpful!)

*** Specialties ***
I am fluent in Rock genres, Blues, Beginning Jazz, Beginning Classical technique, Prepared Guitar, Electronics/Sound Art.

David is a very skilled drummer and a very enthusiastic teacher. In lessons, he seems to like to split time between practicing rudiments and learning to play different rhythms on the set. He is also exceptionally patient and supportive with my 9-year-old, highly distractible daughter. David is very positive, pointing out things that are going well and interesting rhythms that they discover. I am really glad we found David--he is an excellent teacher and I love watching my daughter learn so much about music!

Granville's curriculum centers on the building blocks; great technique to empower flexibility in his students. He uses methods perfected by Alan Dawson (The Rudimental Ritual), Gary Chaffee (Odd Time Stickings), Sanford A. Moeller (The Moeller Technique), and other great teachers while employing methods he has found successful through his years of teaching. When necessary, music theory elements are employed to teach song form, dynamics and overall musicianship.

About Granville
I operate in the music arena as a touring musician; a Music Director for musicals, jazz ensembles and choirs; a composer & songwriter; a band teacher at my local elementary school, a private instructor and a producer with a degree in Jazz Composition and Professional Music from Berklee College of Music. I am currently performing and writing with Divinity Roxx (Beyonce, Victor Wooten, etc.), Elle Winston, Kate Vargas and others. Most of my writing and creating is done here in my private studio. I am proud to have produced tracks featured by the likes of Elton John on his Beats 1 Radio (Apple Music) station. That is to say, I'm really proud of the artists and having such an inspired space.

I have, and continue to be honored to perform all over the world with some of the most prolific players this planet has seen and those it will experi
ence in the coming years. I find playing music can be a great source of inspiration and release. But most importantly, everyone has a voice to be heard through music.

I have taught privately since I was in high school on my own. Over the years, I have also been affiliated with some amazing entities. Additionally, my work in arts administrative (Brooklyn Academy of Music -BAM, UVA Music) translates into my ability to show you skills that will garnish success when you aren't playing music.

My students can expect growth in knowledge of rhythm, understanding of music and song forms. Your timing will improve! Your feel for styles (blues, rock, jazz, hip hop, EDM, etc.) will improve! Your technique will be through the roof!! I empower my students to do whatever they can dream to do with music, whether it is for personal enrichment or personal ambition.

I will demystify anything you feel is outside of your reach and grow you into the musician you want to be. My private studio is a fully equipped playground for the musically-minded with all the tools and materials you need to grow as a musician, so all you need to bring is your imagination. I look forward to the journey.

As an international performer/recording artist, I have developed a vast knowledge of drumming in all styles. My students consistently demonstrate their drive to learn by becoming versatile musicians, and therefore are well-equipped to perform music (and make money doing it!).

About Chris
Originally from Bloomington, IN, I've worked as a music instructor and professional musician for over 8 years. I love being involved in all aspects of the music industry, whether it's writing, teaching, arranging, performing, recording, producing, or promoting.

I have taught over 50 students in the 6 years I've been teaching, and have had several of those students go on to become music majors in college. My focus as an educator is to establish fundamentals and vitally important techniques as effectively and quickly as possible with my students. Then, it becomes more enjoyable and sustainable to begin making great music (all the while incorporating those important aspects of being a musician!).

My primary instruments are drums, saxophone, and euphonium. However, I am proficient and frequently perform on trombone, clarinet, bass, g
uitar, and many other instruments. I enjoy playing jazz and classical music the most, but have performed professionally with groups of just about every popular genre! My musical interests have no bounds, and I believe that all music has something great to offer.

So, let's get started: beginner, intermediate, or advanced, we can begin rapidly building your musical foundation/career right away!

Would you like to learn how to play the drums? Maybe you already play but have a song that you are struggling with or you would just like to learn how to read music. Well look no further. Born and raised to play music I spent my middle and highschool years learning how to play the drums in all styles. I'm classically trained on just about any percussion instrument you can name (timpanis, cabasa, glockenspiel, snare, bass drum, toms, bells, marimba, xylaphone, ect.), jazz trained on the drum set and I was the drumline captain at Royal Highschool in Simi Valley California if you want to learn marching techniques as well. If you are willing to put in the practice then I can guide you into becoming the drummer you have always wanted to be.

About Steven
Hi Im Steve. I started my venture with music when I was 6 when I learned to play the trumpet. I moved onto the drums when I was 10. Played in concert band, marching band and Jazz band through Highschool. I was captain of the drumline at Royal highschool located in Simi Valley California back in 2000 and at Narbonne highschool located in Harbor City California in 2001. I have practiced for thousands of hours and know how to sight read music and can also play by ear. I am patient and understanding that sometimes rythm takes practice.
When I got out of highschool I didn't persue a career in music like I should have. I curently play drums for fairview baptist church in Portsmouth Virginia. Drumming is my lost passion and I would like to teach other people the gift of music.

Everything You Need to Know About Open Handed Drumming
It’s known by a few names: “Open handed drumming,” playing with a “left hand lead,” playing “uncrossed,” or simply “open.” Whatever you decide to call it, open handed drumming is a way of setting up and playing your drum set so that one hand doesn’t cross over the other while playing the time-keeping cymbals (like the hi-hats, or ride).
