I began playing piano 18 years ago when my parents finally gave in to my pleading to take lessons. I had several piano teachers throughout my childhood who all varied in their styles and techniques, but all used a relaxed, student driven approach, which is how I like to conduct my lessons. In high school, I began working as a rehearsal pianist for the Grand Rapids Ballet Company and continued to play for them for four years. I attended Aquinas College where piano and clarinet were my major instruments. I transferred to Western Michigan University to join their music therapy program and continued my studies in clarinet. Post college graduation I have held several accompanist positions and have performed in a number of four and eight piano concerts. I love playing piano and want to share that joy with others! *** Lesson Details *** I am a relaxed teacher and I like to let my students set the tone and pace for their lessons. The structure of your lessons will be determined by what your personal music goals are. I use the Alfred Piano lesson books because I feel that they do an excellent job of teaching piano basics and music theory to all ages. In addition to the lesson curriculum, I always give my students the opportunity to have a fun song to work on. This can be any song of your choice and is a great way to stay motivated in lessons. As a certified Music Therapist, I also specialize in teaching adaptive music lessons to individuals with disabilities. Through piano lessons you can develop fine motor control, attention and focus skills, self-esteem, and a healthy sense of accomplishment.
