About Me

I studied piano in Germany with Lola Poirier (a student of the famous Alfred Cortot) for 11 years, then with Phillip Evans in New York (professor at the Manhattan School of Music) and finally with world-renowned concert pianist Eugene Liszt at Carnegie-Mellon University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance with a Minor in Child Pedagogy.

For the past twenty eight years I have been teaching students of all levels and ages, incorporating some of my former teachers' methods with my own teaching style. I am passionate about awakening a hunger in each of my students for bringing and keeping music in their lives forever. I don't look at my students as children who play an instrument, but as young artists on the road to self-discovery and musical fulfillment!
Although many of my students have used their proficiency in piano for college admission and scholarship opportunities, my goal remains to bring their piano playing ability to such an advanced level, that it will become a part of their lives forever.

Along the way I have created strong bonds of friendship with many of my former students, to the point that I feel like they have become a part of my extended family. I am most rewarded when a former student drops by for a visit after completing college to let me know how they are still being positively affected by their continued use of the gift of playing the piano.

*** Lesson Details ***
My objective in the first few months of working with a new student is to teach them all the basics-especially how to read music-so they will be able to get to play the pieces they love as soon as possible. My emphasis is on classical music, but I also teach Popular Music and Broadway Music or anything else the student might prefer.
I use the Michael Aaron Beginner's book together with Note Reviews (my own method of teaching note reading the fast and easy way).
I am very friendly and outgoing- being overly strict doesn't accomplish anything.... but I am progress oriented. My students all practice because they want to move forward and improve and because they enjoy coming to class and performing in my Recitals....which are a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their talent and accomplishments.

After 3 months many students are just about ready to start on their first real classical piece (such as "Fur Elise' by Beethoven) and by 6 months most are playing original classical pieces by Mozart, Bach and Haydn and Beethoven.

In addition, many of my students enjoy learning contemporary and musical theater pieces, and some even come for audition coaching . I accompany them and help prepare them for their music theater auditions: I teach them how to incorporate their piano training to aid them with their vocal exercises and....having an extended personal background in musical theater myself...give them feedback and insight into the audition process.

My biggest strengths as a teacher are relatability and communication: I am very good at figuring out each of my student's strengths and weaknesses and working with them to bring out their best! Making the lessons fun remains a priority.... as does making sure they learn how to read notes and get exposed to as many pieces as possible so they have a well rounded repertoire.

I love teaching music, it is my greatest passion in life and my students respond in kind by learning quickly and advancing rapidly while enjoying themselves immensely. As is evident by the fact that most of them stay with me for many years most until College some even returning after College to enhance their skills and enrich their repertoire and, because they miss their weekly classes. I Love music, and I love people. Teaching Philosophy -
My teaching philosophy is really built on well rounded communication and multiple facets of explanation and examples so that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment.
I feel that along with being provided good information a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.

I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants and help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet, it is also important to me to also supply a well rounded education environment along with the fields in which the student wants to focus specifically on.

I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music so I can understand all the different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.

I also try and be very patient with my students, empathizing, knowing that when I feel rushed it makes it more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate a topic or musical piece. I love watching the gears run in my students head so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their musical computation abilities.

HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a musicians worst enemies are nerves I feel that keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth in a topic. After all Music is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.

I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.

I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge as long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

In short I love teaching and I love seeing my students accomplish things and get what they want. I am here to help that happen and here to help you elevate your skills and perspectives on music.

Education -
I was born touring with the grateful dead and my whole life has been saturated in music. I received my first guitar when I was 11 and it has been my life since. Soloing within a week I started gigging soon after being acclaimed by some as a child prodigy and now have been doing so ever since.

-After studying extensively on my own (self taught) for 2 years or so, after which I received a full scholarship to a performing arts private school in Santa Monica called Garden of Angels where I studied guitar with Bruce Buckingham (Professor at Musicians Institute and nationally acclaimed guitar player) along with many others. While attending this school I also studied in music ensembles, and musical appreciation along with dance, acting, art/painting etc. and various other art forms.

I consider it supremely important to be well rounded and I have a history of achieving in diverse musical environments. I can't wait to meet you all and begin to learn together and help you achieve your musical aspirations.

I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously so that one can understand a topic or piece of information; yet, it also important to me for a student to feel comfortable and relaxed when learning and performing so I try and joke and keep things positive.

I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculum sources and various other sources and examples such as : MI curriculum for ear training, theory, single string technique, reading, rhythm guitar as well as the real book other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) the guitar players hand book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculum relative to the topic at hand and students personally goals amongst many others.

-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.

-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.

-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed

-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.

Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degree at the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women the Musical, Seussical the Musical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer at churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to perform and study music because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it.

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. About Me

I was inspired by drums at a very young age. My intro was playing along to the stereo hitting the floor with a unmatched pair of sticks. At age 12 I received a drumset and was able emulate some rock drumming style pretty fast. My learning hit a plateau soon after tho. My discipline for drum books and practice was very poor in the beginning.
Attending Musicians Institute in 1987 was the starting point of my commitment to myself to improve and be the best player i can be. I Graduated from MI with Honors and started playing with bands and continued to practice many hours a day. By 1994 I was teaching 30 -60 students a week. I have maintained that schedule for 15 years.
By 1997 I was playing live 2- 4 night a week every week for many years. I have played Thousands of shows in my career. Playing live is one of the best teachers. I help students who want to play on stage, in front of a audience prepare for it.
Another significant part of my education was studying the physiology of playing drums (or any musical instrument.) This had a major positive effect on my practice habits and i bring this info to my students in a "short and sweet" manner of explanation. I will give you the facts of improving on a musical instrument.

I also love the art of songwriting and been fortunate to win several songwriting awards with my band Cohesive in 2008, 2009 and 2010

One of my lessons styles is designed to get you playing from your imagination. Improvisation inspired by the sounds you are creating. In that process I will give you important information about how you earned the sound, so you can always be inspired to create. This can be a fun method for many people. Others students favor playing 2 drumsets at the class and like to rely on the visual aspects of learning.

I have studied the physiology of playing a musical instrument in detail. I like to sprinkle in the facts while we are learning a pattern or piece of music. This knowledge can greatly enhance your practice results.
Students are Always welcome to share more specific things they are interested in working on. I enjoy teaching all drumset concepts including Linear style, Ghost Notes,
compound stickings, double bass style, rudiments, rudiment applications, soloing, ostinatos. I have a few highly recommended method books that work very well. I also really like when students bring in a song they like. My teaching style is a laid back style but i do love to discuss and exercise strong discipline to students who are open to it. 3 months into lessons you can expect to be playing a number of different beats and song(s). I am very good at recognizing the way you are most comfortable learning.
I also play piano and guitar and have access to both instruments at your lesson so we can jam when you want.

About Me

Hi! My name is Mike C. and I am excited at the prospect of teaching you or your child.

I absolutely love to teach, but not just because of my love for the drums or my life-long appreciation of music, but because of my enjoyment of people and the learning process itself. I feel that this is important to mention, because if I didn’t enjoy what I did and take pride in working with people, then my teaching skills, curriculum, and experience would mean nothing. As anybody who has played a musical instrument can attest to, learning something new is difficult, and having a patient teacher who enjoys working with people is mandatory.

Throughout my life, I have had the opportunity to study with some amazing teachers, including Carmine Appice (author of “Realistic Rock” and drummer for Rod Stewart, Vanilla Fudge, Cactus and Jeff Beck), Jason Lingle (Berklee School Of Music), Keith Harris (drummer for The Black Eyed Peas) and Lee Nichols, to name a few. My experiences with these teachers has led to a proficiency in rock, jazz and Latin, as well as the ability to convey these concepts in a manner that promotes patience, personal challenge, and constant progress.

Besides teaching private lessons at many local facilities, I have had the opportunity to teach group classes at dozens of elementary and middle schools, including schools in the Westminster, Ocean View and Huntington Beach school districts. I have also aided many students into attending the arts high-school/college of their choice by working with them to properly read and perform all audition material.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach using the Freddie Gruber method, which promotes a natural grip of stick and the idea that we should allow the stick to “do what it wants to do” by using natural and fluid motions. This is an incredibly effective style of play and is used by drummers such as Neil Peart, Dave Weckl and Steve Smith.

I teach with an emphasis both on rudiments and hand technique, as well as drum-set exercises and genre study. I encourage practice to be done on a rubber practice pad
as well as on the drum-set, and for brand-new beginners, I often recommend that the practice pad be used exclusively for the first several weeks or months to allow for a great understanding of basic grips and hand techniques. This is especially true when the new beginner doesn’t yet own a drum-set. I am often asked, “does my child need a drum-set to take lessons?” The answer is always a resounding “not at all!” A pair of sticks and a practice pad will do the trick, and will also allow you, as the parent, to see your child’s level of involvement.

Within the first 3 to 6 months of lessons, my students can expect to:

- Properly play and understand a handful of rudiments, including the single and double stroke rolls, the paradiddle family, as well as several flam and drag rudiments.
- Play and begin properly reading many different drum-beats and rhythms, and connect these beats using fills that are fun and sound cool.
- Begin learning songs of the their choice, from Metallica to Miles Davis.

*Voice-I specialize in Body Programming, Vocal Rehabilitation, Music Therapy, as well as Seth Riggs's technique. I combine those two techniques, plus my own experience of being in the entertainment industry since the age of 6 months old. Some of the things I cover are range, singing correctly, finding your mix, finding your middle, strengthening your head voice, strengthening your chest voice, vocal placement, correct breathing, singing with feeling, singing in different languages, opera, jazz, pop, Broadway, jingle singing, scat singing, blues, rock, hip hop, r and b, children's, and more.
*Piano-all genres are covered with an emphasis on classical, but I also cover-jazz, pop, songwriting, ragtime etc. Theory, technique, ear training and more
*Songwriting- good prosody, melody, lyrical meter, chords and more.
*I teach what is needed, and tailor the lesson to the personality and individual goals. All students have are given a strong foundation to build on.
