My name is Aneka and my 10 year old son Caleb is a recent student of Rodrigo. Caleb only started playing the clarinet in May 2014. He has made tremendous strides in such a short time. Rodrigo is a very patient, encouraging, and supportive teacher. Caleb is already able to identify and play several notes and some songs. It has made him very confident about his playing. I am pleased with our experience and look forward to Caleb continuing lessons with Rodrigo.

great clarinet teacher

Rodrigo has ben my clarinet teacher for a year now. I am an adult learner who started with limited musical background and no prior knowledge of the clarinet. Rodrigo has been a very knowledgeable and dependable guide who has a positive outlook and an easy-going, flexible style. I have great respect for his expertise.
As a teacher myself, I understand the value of an organized approach. His lessons are purposeful and goal-directed. His praise is well-placed and specific, but he does not hesitate to point out areas I need to work on. His "pointing out" most often involves actual examples. I have difficulty transitioning between some fingerings. Rodrigo never tires of showing me how to improve my fingering technique to make it more efficient. Then--and this is important--he listens/watches to make sure I am following through correctly. If not . . . we go through it . . . again. In this manner, he has helped me expand my "comfort zone" with my instrument. He has a wealth of patience.
Try as I might, he doesn't let me get away with much. I have always been a master at avoiding things. This characteristic extends beyond the usual everyday chores to my clarinet practice. My clarinet book contains some pieces that require extra effort for me to work through. It is amazing how often I miss these pieces entirely. Rodrigo never misses them. Over time he must have evolved specific "radar" to identify them. He makes sure I at least give them a good try. Little by little, this helps me improve. He does keep things varied and is quick to make a change--in book or approach--if necessary.
I am pleased with the progress I have made. When I first started, I had no idea the scope of my undertaking. Rodrigo has helped make the journey enjoyable. More often than not, when I leave my lesson, I have a renewed enthusiasm and a desire to try just a bit harder in my next practice.
Rodrigo seems to love what he does--and I would say he does it well. I am fortunate to have him as my teacher.

Sign up for classes with John. Just do it, and you won't regret it.

Whatever the opposite of musically-gifted is, that is what I am. I'm an adult beginner in the truest sense of the word - never read sheet music, couldn't hold a beat to save my life, and hadn't played an instrument. EVER. That's why I'm still amazed that I've learned to play a couple of simple songs after a few lessons with John - it's a great achievement on his part!

John has the patience of a saint and a great ability to teach. If I don't understand a concept or have difficulty contorting my fingers to hold a certain chord, he shows me a different way and can break it down to simpler terms. He's really a great teacher. On top of that, he's laid back, approachable, amiable, and very understanding of my busy work schedule. He makes sure I leave each lesson with enough homework to practice and gives me constructive criticism to work on my technique. Like another reviewer said, John is really worth his weight in gold!!

Over the last year, I have taken many guitar lessons in the greater DC area in search of a teacher that will help further craft my amateur skill set. To-date, Grant has not only been the most knowledgeable out of any of the musicians, he also beams with passion for the trade. Not to mention his patience and encouragement - a quality that makes even the most rookie guitarist feel like he is the next "The Edge."

I have always wanted to learn to play guitar but I never pushed myself passed learning basic cords and several elementary songs via videos and books. Recently, I decided if I wanted to really learn it was now or never and I started taking lessons with Grant. In addition to his ability to shred on the guitar, which he gladly did when I asked for a demonstration, he is a great teacher. He has been a patient teacher when I repeatedly make mistakes and always sends me off with something cool to practice before the next lesson. I strongly recommend Grant and will continue to use him as my teacher.
