She later went on to pursue a formal education in Classical Vocal Performance and Jazz technique from California State University, Los Angeles. While completing her Bachelors degree, Melissa was fortunate to have worked with many established artists, bands and producers of various styles, including jazz, blues, rock, pop, soul and funk. These collaborations have allowed her to hone her own voice and successfully pursue professional work. Melissa has enjoyed the opportunity of lead local elementary school music programs, and has most recently expanded her private vocal studio Sing Your BEST Self to include ...
Learn to sing better with a vocal coach. A vocal coach helps you work on your unique instrument, your voice.
As any singer, you should know, not only does your voice need to be in tune and to have a good tone but you will also need to be your own voice doctor. You need to take care of your voice (just like any instrument)! One of the first things you can do is to drink plenty of water so your vocal chords don’t dry out. Then you will need to remember to warm your voice up with a few exercises that I can teach you. It’s best to warm up on a daily basis but especially before any performance. Also, learn what key or notes your voice sounds the best. Think of certain songs that you sing of other artist and find out what key they sing them in. Don’t be discouraged if you can not sing all the notes because with vocal exercise you can learn to extend your vocal range!

I am a professional music teacher, and teach private one-on-one music lessons for Drums, Bass, Guitar (electric & Acoustic), Voice, and Trombone. Students are introduced to their instruments in a fun and understandable way. Technique, music theory, and reading are taught through song form, which creates a strong foundation and love for music. We are having fun, while getting the job done. I think that the key to music lessons is the fun and inspiration factor. I remember taking drum lessons from my first teacher who had this GIANT chrome drum set and it just made me want to go home and practice. My main goal with each lesson is to get "one nugget" that the student can walk away with. Either a reading tip, or a song form, or a lick…something tangible that makes them want to practice ...
We focus merging and expanding the chest/mouth/nasal and head resonance and try to improve and work with the student's weakness to overcome blocks in order to gain a stronger voice that projects and that will affect others when you sing! Some physical exercises come from the Feldenkrais and of course we also work on a professional breathing technique to build up your singer's belt. Only a good trained voice will be able to carry long notes, gain better pitch and you will have strength and endurance in your performance as well know everything about how your vocal chords and your physical body work together to make YOUR voice YOURS. Together we focus on making your voice shine, carry and project without straining your throat or vocal chords - I also coach studio technique if needed!
