Melissa has been singing all of her life. She began her vocal training at a very cute age, learning every song she heard, and passionately performing them for friends and family. She later went on to pursue a formal education in Classical Vocal Performance & Jazz technique from California State University, Los Angeles. While completing her Bachelors degree, Melissa was fortunate to have worked with many established artists, bands and producers of various styles, including jazz, blues, rock, pop, soul & funk. These collaborations have allowed her to hone her own voice and successfully pursue professional work.

Most recently, Melissa has enjoyed the opportunity to lead elementary school choirs locally. She will have completed a Masters in Education with a Teaching Credential in 2012, and further, plans to pursue the field of Musical Therapy.

I studied piano and violin from my childhood, and also sang in choirs.

When I went to college (at Princeton University), I concentrated on my major field (of mathematics), and also on the competitive sport of diving. Springboard diving requires very precise control of the entire body, and is learned through hours of progressive exercises. The Princeton diving coach was a former Olympic diving champion, and was able to tell me exactly what exercises to practice to build up my repertoire of dives. He did well with me, and I became Eastern Intercollegiate champion and a National finalist.

When I was about 20, I met a young girl studying vocal music at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. She encouraged me to sing. We were both were attracted to opera and German “lieder”, but I suddenly found that I could not do what was required, since my childhood voice was long gone! My useful voice range included only about 5 tones of “chest voice”, and an easy “falsetto”...

Jan L. is an award winning songwriter, producer, actress, and artist developer. Her studio, Angel Diva Music, is designed to improve artist abilities on and off the stage as well as giving the clientele first-hand knowledge of the industry while increasing their creativity.

Backed by an extensive musical background debuting with the Philadelphia Orchestra and continuing her career singing with Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, Jan L. went on to receive a Bachelor’s of Education in Opera at Temple University and two Master’s Degrees from Combs College of Music in Theatre Arts and Composition.

Jan’s accolades in music continued as she wrote “Damaged” for the newest Ralph Lauren Polo website campaign and composed a television theme for Lou Rawls called "Knock Outs". Rounding out her already stellar résumé, Jan L. has worked with Narada Walden, Marla Sokoloff, and famed vocal coach Seth Riggs and his client roster.

I've been teaching piano, cello, voice and theory in Los Angeles for over thirty years, helping students develop their particular interests in music and to encourage them to reach their personal goals. I love the classics but many of my students want to play popular music, contemporary sounds and jazz and that is fine too. I received my BA in music at UCLA and a Master's at Cal State Northridge. I conduct vocal and bell choirs, run a concert series, play chamber music, sing in a band and teach in the Community College District in addition to running my private studio.
