Key signatures, time signatures, complex rhythms, counterpoint, and chord progressions! Music theory is essential for any kind of musician and is one of my favorite subjects to teach. After a short amount of time, you will be able to use our music theory knowledge to do a bit of composing!

About Christoffer

I have an MFA in Music Composition and Piano Performance from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara.

I have been playing the piano since the age of 7 and started composing as a teenager. I began teaching music in high school and quickly learned that providing musical knowledge is just as important as acquiring the skills it takes to be a musician. Studying with me will help you become a well-rounded musician with the ability to play the type of music you want to play.

Constantly composing, film scoring, and performing, I'm a very active musician that works with classical musicians, rock musicians, and everything in between. I teach a variety of instruments and will cater lessons to your styles and interests. I'm also a ...

Chris is a great teacher. I worked with him at CalArts. He has a highly diverse range of skills as an instrumentalist and composer. He works in various musical styles fluently (from film scoring, songwriting, instrumental and vocal writing, to electronic music). A friendly and pleasant teacher to work with—he is very good at meeting the student at his/her level and helping them with their own individual artistic goals/needs. I highly recommend him as a teacher to anyone wanting to develop their musical skills.

Chris knows his stuff about music for sure. He is a very nice and friendly guy, and chill. He works around your schedule and musical wants. I decided to try and learn the accordion, and started with absolutely no experience. Within 2 months (7 lessons or so) I was crankin' that thing like a pro.

Christopher S. is highly knowledgeable, patient and easy to grasp as a teacher. He knows his stuff! I would recommend him to anyone interested in learning how to play the uke or any other instrument.

It has been said that music theory is the ear's hindsight. Music theory explains how music ticks, and is a wealth of information for songwriters to keep them from getting stuck, enhance their harmonic ideas and concepts, and answers why they decide on most harmonic decisions within a song, or why they choose to "break the rules" also!

About Robin

I've been a songwriter since I was a teenager. I have been teaching music for almost as long. As a teacher, my joy comes from seeing a student realize they have grown, or discover something they now can do that they could not do before, and the confidence gained through their efforts with my guidance. I carry around the Beatles Pocket Reference Guide at all times and preach the gospel of their songwriting legacy to my students when necessary and whenever possible!! I equally love the mystery of the musical ear, and music theory, and how it all works together...I love purple. For all those who know me, I always match in whatever color spectrum I decide for that day, and I always have been that way. I believe in Angels on Earth, I searched for the Lochness Monster (No luck!!) I love ...

My favourite songwriting teacher

I studied at Musicians Institute with Robin. Out of the many teachers I learnt from. She was my favorite songwriting mentor. I couldn't have asked for better. I graduated in March 2013 and till date I cannot forget her part in my music career.

Weslie B. Los Angeles, CA

Beginner to Advanced. For composers, I can help you communicate what you hear in your head, and teach you how to complete pieces, and share your ideas with other musicians. For musicians, I will teach you the tools that help explain how, for example, certain chords and melodies work together. This includes chord progressions, circle of fifths, major/minor scales, etc.

About Weslie

Well-versed in voice, music theory, popular song styles and poetic writing, I can definitely help you expand in your musical and creative endeavors. I studied voice and jazz arranging at Berklee College of Music, and then earned my Master's of Music degree in music composition from Cal State LA. I have sung pop, jazz and theatre music in Los Angeles, New York, and across the US and Canada. I've appeared on the Jay Leno Show, and have sung in many local music venues, such as the Troubadour and Luna Park. I have won multiple awards for my songs in internationally acclaimed "I HATE MUSICALS" - a short film musical (now on iTunes). My musical theatre works has been been presented in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. I am a proud member of CMASH, a ...

Weslie is great!

Weslie has helped me tremendously with music theory. She is really good at listening and figuring out specific areas that I needed help with. She even took time on the side outside of our lessons to listen to music examples I sent her and analyzed them for me. Weslie is patient and makes learning fun. Her teaching environment is comfortable and she's flexible with her schedule. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a teacher!

Weslie is a great mentor and teacher

Weslie has been able to open my eyes to what my voice really sounds like into the "musical world" in terms of technicality. While also been able to make me a better singer already. We have been working on one of my favorite songs, and there's so much I've learned from her in terms of playing the guitar and understanding how the chords are built and interfere into the overall senses of the song. I would recommend Welsie to any person that has passion in music and is willing to take the classes seriously in terms of a good learning pace and content, because I believe that she is one of the best out there in LA.

Highly recommended: Amazing teacher!

Mike is a patient, supportive and incredibly talented teacher. From music theory to practical application, he's got all the answers... And he makes learning fun!

I took guitar lessons more than ten years ago and found it frustrating and I was terribly uninspired. Recently I took my old guitar out of mothballs and was determined to make some progress on the dang thing. A good friend recommended Mike and I've been taking lessons for nine months with him.

What's great about Mike is that he customizes my lessons. I'm not learning out of a book (which, I could if wanted) but I'm learning the songs that I love and learning the theory behind the chords, too. Then he keeps building on what we just learned. I go home from my hour lessons and play for another two hours because I'm so inspired.

I can't recommend Mike highly enough. He's a gem of a music instructor in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles.

This class will follow the curriculum used at the Musician Institute and Berklee College of Music. Books NOT included in the price.

Excellent!

I've taken music lessons (piano, guitar, drums) for years and have been in school for many years... point is, I know what makes a great teacher... passion for their trade, genuine interest in the student learning, and (in my case) exceptional patience. Gio scores a "10" in all aspects of the student/teacher experience.

I have taken lessons with Gio for over 10 years now. Gio is knowledgable and highly skilled in many areas of guitar. Not only does he have a command of the instrument, but he has a great understanding of musical theory as well. I have learned much and continue to broaden my knowledge of the instrument. I highly recommend Gio as a guitar teacher. Plus the italian accent is great.
James T. Van Nuys, CA

I studied AMEB music theory back home in Australia (Australian Musical Examination Board), all the way through until college where I studied a bachelor of performing arts. During my studies advanced theory was covered. As a performing musician playing in orchestras and other ensembles I've always maintained a high level of theory.

I improvise playing electronic violin with DJ's, this requires a broad theory knowledge. It is an instrumental skill when free styling.

I have taught music theory to up and coming music producers to hone their skills and become masters at production. My music has taken me all around the world, from Australia, to Europe and now the US, where I have been recently granted an extraordinary ability visa, recognizing me as one of the best performers from my home country. This allows me to teach and perform music in America.

I look forward to helping you on your musical journey, helping you grow as a musician while making it as enjoyable as possible.

About James

I started my musical career at the age of 2, on the piano, shortly afterwards moving to the violin, and most recently, the viola. Earning the music scholarship at school for best classical musician, and later on the scholarship for best orchestral instrumentalist at the world renowned music conservatoire WAAPA (West Australia Academy of Performing Arts). Earning my first diploma (A.Mus.A) at age 14, my music has taken me all around the world. I've played such places as the Australian High Commission, Rheingoldhalle in Mannhein, Dvorak hall in Prague, Australian embassy in London, Disneyland in Paris, and the opening the Australian embassy in Berlin, all before the age of 18.

I have played in trios, quartets, as a soloist, and many orchestral ensembles playing major concertos, ...

I had a few lessons with another teacher on violin. I came across to James because the other teacher wasn't really working out and I was having trouble understanding. James really walked me through each step of the way so well. He has great patience that really helped me relax and learn so much faster. It has been a great experience.

After playing saxophone for the last few years I wanted to learn the basics of piano. The piano has always been one of my favorite instruments. James made it so much easier than I could have ever imagined. I thought it would have taken a lot longer to get the basics down but within no time at all I was already playing songs that I love. He really broke it down step by step making it easy for me to know exactly what I needed to practice to get me where I wanted to be. I highly recommend James as a teacher, he is friendly and fun to work with. I always look forward to my lessons each week.
