About Me

I have taught music and acting for the past 12 years and I never tire of seeing my students progress and discover their talents! I have performed professionally with choirs, a cappella groups and theatre companies and have written and produced 3 musicals in the community. I believe in learning through creativity and the unique and individual interests of my students.

I believe in allowing the student to take charge of their own learning. I have developed a program for piano that is geared towards learning the basics and then building on that knowledge by teaching the student to teach themselves. Consequently, I only give students 12 to 15 lessons as they will usually have all the knowledge and skills they need to further their talent. This program is mainly for piano, but I have adapted it to beginning ukulele and bass guitar.
I cater to the students needs and interests, however I do focus quite liberally on theory and furthering my students' creativity. I'm not terribly strict, but I do expect a lot from those I teach.

Subjects Taught

Acting, Broadway Singing, Dance, Music Performance, Music Recording, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice

About Me

I've been singing and dancing since I was 3 years old. I won my first songwriting competition in kindergarten. I played clarinet and piano in elementary school and junior high, and also sang in the chorus, In high school I had to choose between band and choir, so I chose choir. I sang solos in all the talent shows and was section leader for my high school advanced choir, and as a senior I was choir president. I was also accepted into G.A.T.E. (Gifted and Talented Education) choir, which was district wide.

I started my college career at Chapman University in Orange, California as a music major, and trained as an opera singer with Lynn Cole-Adcock, a professional opera singer of many years before teaching at Chapman. After a year of hard work mastering vocal technique and music theory I switched to theatre when I caught the Broadway bug. My first production was Hair!, directed by L.A. acting coach and professor Michael Nehring . Soon I had moved on to Shakespeare, in the summers I worked with Shakespeare Orange County, founded and directed by award winning producer Tom Bradac. By my senior year I was directing plays by Megan Terry and Clifford Odets, that year I won Best Director from my theatre department.

A minor in dance was required for theatre majors, I was lucky enough to take classes from Cyrus Parker-Jeanette and several other renowned professional dancers and choreographers. I earned my Theatre and Dance degree from Chapman University in 1998, and moved to New York City where I spent 10 years pursuing a performing arts career, both in theatre and as a singer/songwriter. I found minor professional success as a recording artist and studio musician, and performed in numerous off-off Broadway theatre productions while teaching theatre and dance to children at the Bronx Community Center and also private voice lessons in the recording studio I worked in.
I also did an internship at the famous jazz studio, Nola Recording on 57th Street in Manhattan where I worked with Grammy winning engineer Bill Moss. My off-off Broadway performances were for two grass roots yet successful theatre companies, Stone Soup and Beggars Group.

I just spent a year teaching music to my daughter's preschool class. I have also had 3 of my voice students audition for X Factor and The Voice. I love to pass on what I know and what I've learned to the next generation of artists and performers. My motto is: you only live once, make it count!

*** Lesson Details ***
My teaching style is fun and energetic, lots of positive reinforcement but also high expectations to do your best and be disciplined, especially when it comes to practicing at home. The only way to really learn is to do it! After 3 to 6 months with me, you should be able to perform a song, monologue or dance routine in front of an audience or for an audition, with complete confidence and skills that will blow them away!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons supported with a full weighted keyboard and microphone, and iPad for streaming YouTube karaoke.

*** Specialties ***
I can teach method acting, presentation acting (as in Shakespeare), Broadway musical "belting", opera vocal skills, hip hop dance, jazz dance, beginning ballet dance, folk singing, songwriting skills as in rhyme scheme and phrasing and theme, recording studio basics and proper microphone technique, and public speaking for professionals giving presentations to large audiences.

About Me

Born in Boston mass I am a DU educated pianist comfortable in any Jazz, Rock, or Classical setting but find my first love is the bluesy rollicking piano reminiscent of Jerry Lee Lewis, Dr. John, or Ray Charles. You might have seen me around town in my Top 40 group, Jazz trio, Funk band, Gospel choir, Burlesque band, or as accompaniment to any of the extremely talented singers I have worked with. I'm also a composer and songwriter with a sardonic songwriting style compared to Mose Allison and Dave Frishberg.

I attended the University of Denver‚¬Ä¬ôs Lamont School of Music and graduated with a B.M. in Jazz and Commercial Piano. Not only have I studied intensely with local fixture Eric Gunnison, but also with internationally touring artist Gerri Allen and even with jazz legend Billy Taylor at a summer music institute in Amherst, Mass. In Highschool I won the Clarke Terry award for outstanding musicianship. In college I won the Lamont Made composition contest two years in a row, my band The Orchid Room won the Lamont Jazz Chamber contest and I was a recipient of the Cherrington Global Scholarship, a grant that allowed me to spend a year performing and studying in Australia.

Since graduating college I have worked as the pianist on a cruise ship and have performed in Mexico, Hawaii, South America, French Polynesia, and Australia. I have recorded with LA based R&B artist Molly Cottrell, South By Southwest nominated Folk artist Leah Druzinski, and have had my music produced by Ikey Owens (keyboardist for Sublime, The Mars Volta, and Jack White.) I perform regularly at local venues Dazzle, Jazz at Jacks, and The Living Room.

I have 7 years teaching experience and am especially suited to teach jazz, rock, funk, pop, blues and salsa. I am incredibly student focused, striving to help my students achieve their specific goals, and committed to working one on one to help you get what you want out of every lesson. Friendly, relaxed and affable, I have significant experience with adult and teenage students, students with special needs, and students looking for instruction in rock, pop, or blues.

I stand out from other piano teachers because my lessons are specifically tailored to your needs. While most Teachers in Denver are trained to take young children through a piano workbook and develop them into classical musicians, I teach based on what the student wants to play. I have significant experience in Jazz, Blues, and R&B piano as well as songwriting, and have worked professionally in rock, funk, salsa, jazz, standards, gospel, top 40, burlesque, and solo piano acts. My approach is not designed for young children but for adults and teenagers of all experience levels who have an interest in learning more about music.
