About two decades ago, I bought my first guitar from a pawn shop in Las Vegas and have been playing and loving music ever since. During and after college, I spent most of my time in the music scene of Las Vegas. I also spent much of that time (about 12 years) studying and gathering information about playing and music composition.

Benefits from taking these lessons...
I have decades of music theory education, self teaching and playing experience. The unique lesson course I have developed can easily benefit any student. From the very first lesson, I teach the universal language of music theory (the structure of all music) and show how to apply the theory. A student can then apply the same knowledge to any instrument, including singing. The student can also read music, write songs, improvise, understand how to make music, and know why music works the way it does. Once a student has mastered the basics of music structure, they can play and sing with other musicians and even teach other people, how to play.

What students can expect when taking lessons?
Upon arriving at my home, the student will be greeted by my smiling face. We will then continue to the roomy, open and comfortable studio space, featuring computers and musical instruments for both the student and the teacher. We will start by talking about the student'™s goals, ambitions and about how much or little the student already knows about playing the music theory. We will also talk about what will be expected and go over a basic outline of what will be taught. At the same time, I will be taking notes so we can monitor the student's desired progress in the future. We then immediately start the lessons at the very beginning of basic music theory, no matter what the student already knows or does not know. We will go through the lessons as fast as the student's previous knowledge allows or as slow as the student'™s limitations dictate. Before leaving, the student will be reminded what to practice and receive a small preview about upcoming lessons (I do this to keep them motivated and excited). Throughout every lesson, I continually remain aware of the student's facial expressions and struggles. I will stop to explain the lessons in more detail if needed and/or assure the student that we will continue to go over it again until they fully understand everything and are comfortable continuing.

What curriculum is being used?
I teach using the timeless system of music theory as applied to the guitar, piano and voice. This form of learning music, educates the student, in a way that reading music notation, tablature or memorizing a few songs can not. By learning music this way right from the beginning, a student understands what makes music sound great.

Are the lessons strict or laid back?
I show students how music is structured in an easy laid back way, which students of all ages can understand and enjoy practicing. All my students and I have lots of fun learning this way, by actually learning and not just memorizing. Nothing makes me feel better than seeing a students face light up with those many "œah ha" moments of understanding!

About Me

I have been playing guitar for 29 years, starting with Rock/Blues before studying both Classical and Jazz guitar in college. I received my Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1995. I am currently a guitar teacher in the NW Chicago suburbs and in Chicago currently with 40+ students, teaching all ages, all levels and all styles. I have been teaching guitar and music off and on for the past 19+ years but in 2007 I decided to devote myself to teaching full time (yes, teaching guitar is my primary job!) of the best decisions I have ever made!

To me, playing music is an incredibly rewarding experience. It€™s also a lot of fun! But no matter what your goals are in music, I have found, through many years of playing and teaching, that every musician needs a basic understanding of their instrument and of music in general. Whether you€™re learning piano, saxophone, violin, flute or guitar all music students will need to know about the basics of music, how it works and where the notes are on their instrument. My goal as a guitar and music instructor is to *teach people how to teach themselves*. I would love to have you study with me for years and years, but a good instructor should be able to show people what they need to know so that they can be their own primary music educator for the rest of their lives. Not only is it more economically friendly for the student, I see it as simply the right thing to do. My lessons are designed to make the absolute most of a student's motivation and to keep them motivated to maximize their learning experience!

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether you are an absolute beginner or more experienced guitar player, I see it as my mission to prepare all of my students to be *musicians*, not just people who can move their fingers on a guitar. I believe that all musicians should think of music as a language: if you don't understand the basics of any language how can you expect to communicate well in that language?

Beginners can expect to learn the foundations of guitar and music: good finger and pick technique, familiarity with basic notes, simple chords, basic musical concepts, easy and fun songs. More advanced students can expect to improve in many aspects of guitar playing in most styles and in their understanding and appreciation of music- advanced playing techniques (pick and finger style), scales, arpeggios, advanced chord forms and chord progressions, melodic improvisation in any style, music theory, ear training, etc. I teach beginning and intermediate Classical guitar as well. I request that Classical guitar students already have some prior guitar experience (knowledge of basic notes and chords).

In my years as a guitar student and as a teacher, I have learned that communication is the key to good, productive lessons and as much as possible I cater lessons to what each student is interested in, while having fun!

I offer lessons at any of my 4 teaching studios (Morton Grove, Des Plaines, Wilmette and Chicago), and at my home as well- whichever is most convenient for you! Due to my schedule, I am not currently available to offer in-home lessons at student's homes.

I like to think I get beginners started the "right" way- through learning to read music, gaining an understanding of basic musical concepts and building confidence through a progressive guitar method designed for each student. I use several guitar method books in my lessons (Mel Bay, Alfred, Guitar For The Small Fry) that we use depending on the student's age and prior musical/guitar experience, in addition to my own library of guitar materials.

For intermediate to advanced students, I specialize in single note soloing and improvisation, developing and building a chord vocabulary, developing good picking and fingerstyle technique, sight reading, ear training and applying music theory concepts to make one a better musician. About Me

I play, write, record and perform a variety of American popular music forms
including rock, folk, blues, funk, bluegrass, country, fingerstyle
guitar, and jazz.

I began my musical training learning drums as a 12 year old and a year later began private lessons on guitar as well. In the following years, while playing in rock bands and focusing primarily on guitar and continuing practice on drums, I became interested in learning other instruments: I took harmonica lessons and taught myself how to play bass guitar and keyboards. As a teenager I also began writing my own songs and teaching myself how to record music. I also play Spanish flamenco guitar and studied with master flamenco players while living in Madrid, Spain.

Today, I play guitar, harmonica, sing and write songs for my own group, while also working on a variety of other recording projects that reflect my various musical personalities. I love everything about music, and there's nothing I enjoy more than sharing music with others, whether that be playing in a group, going to a concert with a friend, or talking about music with one of my students. One of my greatest joys is seeing others get involved in the world of music by learning to play an instrument, so I take great pride and responsibility in teaching my students and I hope to make that experience as positive and rewarding as it can be for everyone I work with.

My approach:
I take a multi-disciplinary, multi-instrumental approach to teaching music. I feel that today's students are very interested in learning more than just one instrument, style or discipline. One of my greatest assets as a teacher is that I can play and teach guitar, bass, drums, harmonica, keyboards, songwriting, and audio production/engineering, or any combination thereof, to a student that is interested in becoming more than just a guitar player.

That being said, my musical experience centers primarily on the guitar, and that's where I prefer to start teaching my students. And if you only want to learn guitar, we'll just stick with guitar. However, if you want to learn other instruments too (guitar and drums; guitar, bass, and harmonica; guitar, keys and drums; etc.) we will work together to create a program that allows you to achieve all of your musical goals in time.

No matter what, the bottom line is this: you determine the direction of your musical education. The first time we meet, we will talk about your musical interests and goals, and from that conversation I will design a curriculum that fits your personality, needs and desires. I work with each of my students to determine and constantly refine his or her path, and as we follow your path I will work to give you all the tools needed to pursue your goals...and if I can't give them to you I'll help you find someone who can. I know my limits as a musician and teacher and I will always be honest with you about those things. For example, if you decide you want to be a jazz guitarist, I can get you started on that path, but once you advance beyond my limits (I love jazz, but it's not my forte), I will help you find a teacher who better fits your needs and goals.

Finally, I have always felt that music should be fun and there's no reason that learning to play an instrument can't be fun too. That doesn't mean it won't be hard work, because, like anything else in life, as you get deeper into music it will not only become more rewarding, but more challenging too. Still, it should always be fun. I understand that each student is unique and what "fun" means for one student may be different for another, and so we will work at your pace and according to your goals and desires to create a program that is ideal for you.

My Method:

I use a variety of teaching techniques and tools in my lessons and will cater those tools toward the needs of each student. You don't need to read music to learn how to play an instrument, but I do use a number of simple, easy-to-learn written methods in my teaching. More importantly, I encourage my students to learn how to "hear" music so that as they advance they can begin to teach themselves how to play the things that they hear. Therefore, much of my teaching method focuses on seeing, hearing and feeling the music...this is the way almost all popular music has been taught and learned since the beginning of time, and with the right supplement of written methods I think it still comprises the most effective way to become a complete musician.

I can also record every lesson for my students and make the recording available as a CD or mp3 via email so that you can listen to the lesson as you practice on your own at home.

Additionally, if you are interested in songwriting or audio recording, we can incorporate lessons on those subjects into your curriculum as well. Understanding both is an essential part of being a well-rounded musician in any genre these days and both fields can open up wide worlds of expression and artistry to those willing to delve into them. I am passionate and knowledgeable about both songwriting and recording.

About Me

Originally from Indiana, David has been teaching music in both the private and public school sectors for 12 years. Getting his start as a drumline instructor with only 4 students, David soon expanded his teaching to include both guitar and piano, which he studied under Frank Puzzulo (of Miles Davis' group) at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.

Upon graduating Ball State, David moved to Colorado to study jazz and classical music with Dr. Douglas Walter, an accomplished percussionist who is known for his versatility and multiple percussion talents. He also studied piano and guitar in his off time, jamming with several rock and jazz groups both in and out of school.

In 2006, David left the college scene with a Masters in Music and moved to Florida where he began his teaching career. In Florida, David taught roughly 70 students, ages 5 to 18, at Wewahitchka High School and Middle School. He was beloved by the town, helping out in the community as a local organist for the Presbyterian Church and as a frequent contributor to Wednesday night worship.

As wonderful as this time was, David gave up the gators and swamps to move back home to Indiana in 2007. Here, he took a job at Kokomo High School and Maple Crest Middle school where he resumed teaching students from 5th graders to seniors in all areas of music, including wind, strings/guitar and percussion. David established the first ever "rock and roll" class at the high school in 2008, a program that started with only 5 students and has ballooned to 38 in this current year! The class consisted of guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, all of which David can teach at a professional level.

Most recently, David graduated with his second Masters in Jazz Performance from DePaul University. He studied primarily with professor Ron Perillo, unquestionably the most innovative piano player in Chicago and with Bob Palmieri, a gifted guitarist. Having now graduated, David is devoting himself full time to teaching private students and looks very much forward to working with you!

*** Lesson Details ***
Although David has a laid back personality and approach to life, he takes his job very seriously. He prides himself in not being the kind of teacher who is there simply to entertain and hope the student learns something in the process. Though you will most certainly have a good time, you should only take from him if you really want to become a great musician/player. Having been a highly qualified public school teacher for 5 years, David has more experience than most private teachers you can find. He knows what it takes to achieve greatness and he knows that most students, in the end, respect that more than a half hour "jam session."

David will tailor his curriculum to each student. Every student is expected to have a notebook with staff paper and a pencil at their lesson. Students will also be assigned a book to purchase (in some cases more than one) and he/she will progress through it at a pace appropriate to his or her level.

More than anything, what you will see in David's lessons is his love for music and teaching music. It is truly a special thing to be gifted in this art, and he believes that anyone who is willing to put in the time, the effort and the dedication needed will be rewarded and enriched in the end.

David is also available for online lessons via Skype! He loves taking advantage of this modern technology in his lessons and is happy to take on new students in this format.

My name is John and I am a guitar instructor for Take Lessons. I have been teaching music lessons for over seven years. In addition to teaching at, I have my own music instruction company (Sklut and Weston School of Music), and I have taught at the Stafford Music Academy, The Chicago Guitar Academy, Vance Music, the CODA Academy. I have been playing guitar for over seventeen years, and began my private musical training under the instruction of my father (a PhD in Theory and Composition) at the age of four. I have extensive experience with writing, performing, and studio work, and have contributed to innumerable projects in the vein of popular music as a writer, performer, producer and engineer.

I get excited to see the passion for music harnessed in my students as they learn the principles of theory, technique, form/structure and performance. These principles are usually not limited to any style or genre (rather, they are mostly UNIVERSAL) which makes learning them extremely valuable empowering. In addition to these things, students of mine usually learn how to read and write music so that you can effectively communicate with other musicians!

Our lessons will be exciting and eye-opening! I do not stick to a particular curriculum because I believe that it is extremely important for each student to have their lessons tailored to their specific interests, goals, and personality.

Within 3 to 6 months you will be introduced to the basic concepts of music including melody, harmony (key, chords), and meter (time). You will learn how these concepts work to create music by studying and learning some of your favorite songs and tunes!

At first, technique mostly comes through one-on-one instruction and by simply getting comfortable with your instrument. However, as your skill develops we will begin to focus more on technique so that you can become the most efficient player possible!

You will also begin to develop your ear and will begin to learn how to critically listen to music. Within 3 to 6 months you may even begin to understand what is happening in a song you have never heard just by listening to it!

You should expect to invest in some educational material. This can include a book or books, a notebook, a metronome, etc. If you already have some of these materials, then great! If not, do not worry. We can discuss which materials you need as you develop a need for them.

feedback rating from students.I am a professional rock and roll, pop and folk guitarist, singer and writer who has expertise in rock and roll, the blues, and jazz guitar as well as classical, jazz and pop theory. In addition, I can teach classical guitar to beginner students.

I tailor my teaching methods and curricula specifically to each student, their interests and stated goals. Within the first few months of private lessons most students will see their technical skill improve dramatically, their ability to read music will become more fluid, and their ear (ability to critically listen to music and understand what is happening in the music) will begin to develop.

Most students will spend some time working out of books (though, which book(s) will be determined once each student, their parents, and I get a chance to discuss what is best for the student). In addition, we will work will drills, techniques and concepts that I have developed myself over several years of teaching, and will apply these concepts to popular songs, tunes, or pieces that the student wishes to learn themselves. It's learning, but it's also really fun!

I do my best to accommodate the musical desires, goals and interests of all of my students individually, as each one deserves the best, most attentive and personalized instruction that I am capable of providing.

About Me

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.

Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive approach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.

The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.

Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.
