About Me

I have been first trained as a professional opera singer as a child in Korea. For many years, I have performed on stage. When I came to America, I have continued to pursue education in voice (and piano) at Troy University and at Baptist College of Florida while seeking other degrees.

In addition to my main focus on vocal training, I am professionally trained to play instruments such as piano, guitar, flute, and violin. I have learned to play piano and guitar to initially accompany my own singing, but I have continued to study these instruments to this day. I have been a main church pianist, wedding pianist, collaboration pianist, and etc. For flute and violin, I have been a member of ensemble groups and orchestra (and symphonic band) and performed on various occasions.

These training has allowed me to start a music academy in Korea from 1990-1996. There, I have taught all the instruments I have learned: piano, violin, cello, flute, guitar, and voice. It started small, but it grew rapidly and before I came to US in 1996, I had over 250 students. I had hired 6 more teachers, one for each division. My students came as beginners and would leave as educated musicians, who entered competitions, performed in public events and at concerts, and sought degrees in music.

In US, I had a small music studio for many years in Alabama. My students have entered AMTA competitions for state of Alabama, sonata competitions, and many others. Some have won, and others have lost. Those who won smiled and those who lost cried, but all returned with good experiences.

Now in Georgia, I am starting to teach again. I hope to offer my new students same amount of care and education borne out of experience that I have provided for many, many years.

Teaching is my passion. I have taught music for over 20 years to students of all ages, of all backgrounds, and of various levels of training. When I teach, I want to make sure that my students are enjoying the process of creating music.

Learning something new, or continuing the education may be difficult or frustrating at times. This may encourage students to give up prematurely. However, when learning is a fun experience, students can learn to truly appreciate the joy of music. I can offer you with this opportunity.

My lessons will typically consist of 3 main sections: music theory, practice (on instrument of choice), and art of performance. The degree of introductions to these will vary depending on the interest and the training level of the student. I may be using Suzuki or other curriculums that are organized and appropriate to the student's learning curve. I will accommodate the musical needs of everyone.

In terms of teaching style, I am patient, friendly, and accommodating. I like to enjoy each lessons with my students, so I will be smiling alot. It'll be a minimally stressful environment.

If you would like to have me as your music instructor, please feel free to ask for me and we'll get started on our musical journey together.

Kelly H. Woodstock, GA

About Me

Kelly was born and raised in Sarasota, Florida. She started taking flute lessons at the age of 12 under the instruction of Betsy Hudson-Traba, principal flutist of the Sarasota Orchestra. Throughout high school, she played in Sarasota€™s youth orchestra program and was a winner of the Young Artist Competition. With a solid foundation in flute playing, she went on to study with Eva Amsler at the Florida State University where she earned her Bachelor of Music in flute performance. She had a lot of wonderful playing opportunities here and as an undergraduate was playing in the top orchestra. Kelly was a member of the €œworld renown€ Marching CHIEFS, where she served as section leader to 50 plus flutes her senior year. One of the more unique ensembles she participated in was the Andean ensemble, Aconcagua, where she played the zampona (pan pipes) and the quena (Andean flute). Kelly decided to go abroad for graduate school earning her Master€™s at a small conservatory in beautiful Lugano, Switzerland called the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana. She studied under Italian flutists, Mario Ancillotti, Stefano Parrino, and Giovanni Crola. She had many opportunities to pursue her love of traveling and work on her foreign language skills! After heading home to the States Kelly began her freelance career substituting in various orchestras in Florida including the Sarasota Orchestra, Sarasota Ballet Orchestra, and the Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra. She now lives in Woodstock, Georgia and is working on building up a flute studio and freelancing. In addition to music, Kelly loves spending time with family, friends, and her adorable kitties. She also enjoys reading, the great outdoors, baking, and cleaning!

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal for every student is to experience learning their instrument in an environment that is both encouraging and rewarding. I exhibit patience with the student knowing what it takes to develop new skills and I work hard in helping each student feel at ease in expressing themselves. I have used many different materials over the years, depending on the individual student's needs and desires to play their music. I do stress learning to read music notation so that you can approach with confidence any piece of music that you would like to play. With the proper dedication, every student can enjoy making music in a short period of time, getting better and better along their musical journey.

*** Specialties ***
I have used many of the published methods for all of the instruments over the years. I am always open to any approach that will work for any given student.

The goal of music lessons is not to just learn the notes and mechanics of an instrument, but to become a well-rounded MUSICIAN. With my lessons, we don't just go through a book page-by-page, rather, lessons are shaped around the musical tastes and interests of the student. Musical theory concepts are applied in actual songwriting and current popular songs. I accompany the students on various instruments, imitating a real performance situation. I teach all ages; beginners to advanced musicians.

Unlike a crowded music store with a cramped little room for lessons, my lessons are taught in a large, open, and well-lit home studio. There is an open waiting area where parents can listen as well. Parking is convenient on a cul-de-sac with a clear view into the teaching studio.
