Anne received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with a Vocal Emphasis from Oakland University in Rochester, MI in 2008. She has taught privately since 2006.

Anne uses her experience with performing solos and singing in a variety of ensembles and well as her knowledge of vocal technique, music theory, music history, ear training and piano to best aid her students in improving their voices or beginning their piano studies. She also uses her experience as a voice coach and her understanding of learning theories, specifically Constructivism, to best teach each individual.

Anne has trained under some of the most prominent names in the metro-Detroit area, many of whom have performed around the world in opera and musical theatre productions. Anne has also performed in productions throughout the metro-Detroit area. She uses many of the same methods that her voice teachers used on her, and that have allowed her to grow into a professional singer.

Anne teaches a classical method of vocal technique. The classical method is the foundation. It is up to the individual just how he or she would like to build on it. However, Anne has experience with a wide variety of genres, besides classical, and would be happy to impart this knowledge to her students.

Anne's goal is to provide high quality instruction to students of all ages in order to help them express themselves musically to the best of their combined ability, in time allowed to teach them, in order for them to become independent musicians.

I am a kind and welcoming teacher! I understand that everyone's voice is personal and unique. I strive to bring out the best that your voice has to offer. I like to create a comfortable, but on task environment for my students. I understand that students of voice need continued support to develop the vocal mechanism.

The first lesson is not an audition, but a 'getting to know you' session. On this first lesson we simply do a few vocal warm up exercises. This is so that I can get a feel for your voice and so that I will be able to create a personalized program adapted to your vocal needs. I may also ask you to sing a song that you already know- such as Jingle Bells- in both high and low keys so that I can get a sense of what songs would best suit your voice. Following this, if there is a song that you have worked on in your past singing experience, I would encourage you to bring it to this first lesson so that I can get even more of an understanding of where you are at vocally.

Aside from the first day, the usual curriculum consists of theory, warm-ups, sight-reading, and repertoire.

Music Theory is the study of music notation and the rules which govern composer techniques. Depending on the age and experience of the student, they will receive a theory book from which they will do lessons independently. We check these pages together and go over any questions the student has at the beginning of the lesson.

Warm-ups are simple vocal exercises that serve multiple purposes. The first is what the name implies: to warm up your voice. Much like when you warm up your muscles before exercising, your voice also needs some time to prepare itself. Second, this is a perfect opportunity to work on breathing, posture, tone and resonance, that you can then apply to all music you sing. Warm-ups will bring your voice into peak performance mode and you will be ready to succeed on your repertoire.

Sight-reading is learning how to read music through the vocal instrument. With my help, I will teach you to sing music on a page just by looking at and understanding the notation. This helps to develop the ear and also allows you to understand the notes that are above the words that you are singing. My goal with this is that you will come to not need me at all - that you will be able to look at a piece of music and be able to sing it, with out any professional having to play or sing it for you.

That being said, the majority of your lesson will be spent on learning actual music! As stated before, I teach a classical foundation. Many students find classical music to be more taxing when it comes to technique, which is what makes these songs perfect for improving technique. For those who wish to concentrate on musical theatre, pop, jazz, or other genres, we often concentrate our efforts equally on what the student wishes to focus on and classical. As you progress we will move to more challenging or unfamiliar repertoire. It is through new, interesting repertoire, that you will not only improve your voice, but also expand your horizons as you explore and perform new genres that you may not be familiar with.


I typically use the Faber method books for both adults and children. I will insure that you get experience with composition, improvisation and listening along with theory, technique and performance training.

I will also give you ample opportunities to perform through contests and community events, if you chose to do so.

I hope that you will consider voice or piano lessons for yourself or for a family member or friend. I tailor lessons to individual students and will make them fun and worthwhile.

About Me

I am a summa cum laude graduate of both the University of Evansville's (IN) celebrated Music Therapy program, with two years of piano pedagogy training and Georgia State University’s Vocal Music Education graduate program. I have performed across the country with an extensive range of professional and student musicians and have served as faculty accompanist with several universities. For over two decades, I have worked as a church musician, directing choirs of all ages and serving as both organist and pianist.

My studios have expanded successfully to as many as 80 private students (from ages 5-90 at both beginning and advanced levels) along with small group classes, and I have taught thousands of students throughout my 26 years of experience as a music educator. I am also the former organist for the National Christian Choir, based in Washington, D.C. and have extensive experience with recording studio work as a vocalist and pianist. I am a former high school choral teacher and recently taught for three years at a Georgia middle school, earning straight superior ratings in all contests and an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall in May.

I love to teach beginners (of all ages!) and also love to coach older teens in their pursuit of success with various auditions in both piano and voice. I am also passionate about training young pianists to accompany! I have just transitioned to Michigan due to my husband's new position in Detroit. I have three daughters: twins who are a violist and cellist and a daughter studying veterinary medicine. I am a music teacher at The Grosse Pointe Academy and am the Artistic Director of the Detroit Children's Choir.

My music education philosophy can be wrapped up in two words: individual musicianship. I truly believe and have experienced the truth that all human beings are capable of producing and understanding music and, therefore, must be given maximum opportunity to do so. To ignore development of musical intelligence is to fail as educators. Therefore, my goals for each student are individual and comprehensive, wrapped in hope and rooted in encouragement. I aim to create a safe, warm, fun and caring atmosphere in the learning environment.

An emphasis of lessons with me, based on my philosophy of independent musicianship, will include learning to read music notation fluently in a systematic way: vocalists using solfege and sight reading, and pianists integrating music theory with songs being played so they can become fluent readers of all music they love. My ultimate goal is to provide the optimum chance for each student to develop a life-long understanding and independent enjoyment of music, which I believe is essential to life.

I plan to choose repertoire and curriculum that is expressive, artistic, allows for musical growth and success in performance, provides critical thinking opportunities, lyrics/texts that teach quality (in the case of vocal music), can provide an aesthetic experience as enhanced by musical elements, and is derived from various cultures, periods of history, languages, and genres. The repertoire will come primarily from a foundation of classical genres with student choice pieces as well, in the genre of their favorite music, applying all of the basics that have been learned from other curriculum.

One might walk into a lesson and see a buzz of activity from learning "games” to the student creating a theory worksheet, to counting of eighth notes and stomping in figuring out a hard rhythmic passage, to a diminuendo into the nothing of silence. A vocal student might be learning some breathing exercises that improve vocal technique and finding the correct pitch through the kinesthetic use of solfege hand signs; the piano student might be in the guided process of breaking down the "hard spot" into small bits so success can be achieved in the lesson and then repeated at home. I desire active engagement of the student with well-defined goals for home practice. I will plan any activities that might be effective in bringing each student into understanding and joy in creating beautiful music to the best of his/her ability and sharing it with others in performance as desired.

Scott began his music career at Berklee College of Music in 1985 and continued his education at WMU and WSU as a Jazz Performance - Composition Major. He has studied privately with Ken Taft, Gene Butler, Mikhal Caldwell and Joe LoDuca.

As a performer Scott has been in a wide variety of bands and is a founding member of the Frank Zappa Tribute 'Ugly Radio Rebellion' and Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute 'CrossFire'. With 28 years experience as a music educator Scott has done an estimated 20,000 private lessons as well as classes, clinics, College Prep courses and is a member of The American Guild of Music. I have experience teaching both beginning and intermediate piano and beginning voice. I enjoy working with students of all ages and helping them develop as musicians. I am patient and understanding and believe that students need to feel comfortable with a teacher to optimize the learning experience.

I studied private piano into my high school years and studied organ and voice in college where I was a vocal soloist. I attended Concordia College, Ann Arbor, Mi and received my BA in Music Education from Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa

I have accompanied both Middle School and High School Choirs and instrumentalists, played organ and directed church choirs. I currently play organ in two churches and direct a Middle School Choir Chime group. I enjoy working with students in large group settings as well as one on one. I have been teaching with Take Lessons for almost two years. Sharing music is a great joy.

I especially love playing keyboard because of its expressive nature, the soft and loud, the sweetly and the contemplative. It brings me pleasure especially when a challenging piece has been mastered.

I attempt to adapt lessons so each student can be successful. A variety of curriculum is used based on student's needs and the basic curriculum is supplemented with additional material to reinforce the lessons being taught. Each piano lesson begins with reviewing material from the previous lesson and then learning new pieces, including technique and theory as appropriate to the music. Voice lessons begin with warm-ups and vocalizes including solfege and sight-reading and them moving into learning a piece of music to perform.. Practicing is an essential part of the learning process. Students are given practical ideas on how to make practicing more effective and enjoyable.

About Me

Detroit native, Nicholas C. K., demonstrated an innate musical talent from a young age. His command of piano, guitar, trumpet and bass progressed to studies at both Columbia University in Chicago and Wayne State University in Detroit. Since age 16 Nic has toured the country sharing the stage with acclaimed rock acts such as; Tesla, Bret Michaels, 3 Doors Down and many others. He is currently endorsed by Warwick Basses.

Nicholas been a musician in some form or another for as long as he can remember. His musical journey started when he was only six, with a delve into the realm of classical piano. While there he studied under world class child prodigy Josh Cullen. The composers that he studied include Bach, Beethoven, Barton, Hayden and many others.

From here he progressed to playing jazz trumpet, studying the Jamey Aebersold method under Paul Finkbeiner, the lead trumpet player for the Paul Keller Ensemble.

Then at the age of 11, with the help of his grandfather he discovered the guitar. He learned quickly on his old SR guitar. He quickly discovered that he had a natural taste for blues phrasing, and his soloing abilities quickly blossomed. 2 years later, he had formed his first band, Spherical. It was through this band that he found the bass.

His journey into the realm of bass, began out of necessity and progressed into love of the bottom end. Since then, he has been collecting basses, playing, living and breathing bass. He now realizes the importance of a funky beat, a subtle line and most important of all A Tight Groove!!!

The benefit of studying under someone with a vast array of both talent and experience is clear.

During his musical career Nicholas has played almost every style of music; from folk to experimental from jazz to rock. One thread holds true through all music, it has to groove.
During the course of a lesson he will cover a broad range of topics starting from the basics, and moving into ear training, sight-reading, theoretical knowledge and most important for bass players, groove. Just as every player has their own musical personality and voice, so to does every lesson that Nicholas gives.
In a supportive, patient environment, every lesson is custom tailored to the student.

I love teaching, simply love teaching! I teach students of all ages. I teach piano, voice, clarinet, and saxophone. I have taught for over 25 years. My students have lots of opportunities for performance, if they choose to. We perform at Nursing Homes, Retirements, Festival of Trees, and Seasonal Recitals. There are at least 2 recitals a year, 1 at Christmas and 1 in the Spring, if enough participation, we often have one in summer with a party afterward. We also participate in the Michigan Music Association competition. I have also had students perform in Disney World in Florida!!! I have been in many musicals such as Annie, Gypsy, Rock Around the Clock. I have put on solo recitals. I am a member of my church choir. My students and I have fun while we are learning music! It is the best job ever.

I use a variety of curriculum, which includes classical, broadway, some pop, new age, and jazz. After 3 to 6 months you will have a basic understanding of your instrument and will be ready to take off! I do ask students to keep track of your practicing so you can see your progress.

For piano:
I use the Alfred Basic Books for beginners and then we move to the Keith Snell books along with other supplemental books. If a student already is using a book, generally we will finish that book up so they won't have to purchase another set of books.

For Saxophone and Clarinet:
I use the Rubank books along with other supplemental books

For Voice:
I use the 24 Italian Songs and Arias, The Young Singer, and various Broadway books. Any pop music must be purchased by student as there is just way too much to chose from for me to have a lot of it.
