Over the years my teaching has evolved and I find it gratifying to take people far beyond their own expectations while helping them achieve their goals. Weekly private lessons focus on technical skills in either piano, voice (or a combination of both) and a strong musical foundation. Theory and Ear Training are fundamentals that are embedded in this approach to developing a complete musician and artist.

I have over 20 years experience working with students as young as 3 and old as 85! Often multiple generations in a family study together making for a rich family experience.

Performance opportunities: Recitals, Concerts Cabarets and Musicals are a part of developing into a musician and singer and enhancing a love of music that will last a lifetime!

Piano - Classical, Jazz, Blues and Improvisation. Current students are beginners to professional musicians and music teachers.

Voice – I am an accomplished vocal coach and songwriter and currently work with a wide variety of singers from young beginners to professionals who look to develop through ear training, singing and songwriting. In a unique way I guide people to become better performers and musicians through the combination of voice, piano and composition.

I work with students as young as 3 or 4 and into their 80’s. It’s important to begin with an excellent teacher from the start to set a good foundation and to have the ability to develop as quickly and thoroughly as possible. I enjoy working with beginners as well as accomplished musicians. I also believe that music is one of the great joys of life and that lessons should be FUN!

Besides a wide variety of performance opportunities through my Family to Family Concerts, I also offer my students the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, a gold standard music curriculum.. The ABRSM is accredited in over 100 countries worldwide and exams are offered twice per year in all instruments and voice.

I help students to achieve their interests of music rather than focusing on teaching one particular method. Classes are tailored to the student and constantly evolving. This has led me to work in a variety of mediums and styles including Jazz, improvisation, rock and blues. This approach also enhances an understanding and love of classical music.

About Me

Lyric Baritone, Orlando S., holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from the Peabody Conservatory and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, respectively. Orlando serves as the Director of Music and Chancel Choir conductor at Hunt's Memorial United Methodist Church which was founded in 1773 during the advent of our nation‚¬Ä¬ôs history.

In addition to his work as a conductor, Orlando is also a highly-respected and sought studio teacher of voice and piano. He maintains an active voice and piano studio in the Baltimore area having successfully taught hundreds of students. Orlando holds memberships with the National Association for Music Education (MENC), the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and teaches students in five different locations.

Orlando is a versatile artist with performance experience in opera, chamber music, art song, oratorio, musical theater, pop and jazz. He has completed concerts with the Municipal Opera Company of Baltimore, UMBC Camerata, Vocal Arts and New Music Ensembles including performances of works by W.A. Mozart, G.F Handel, Beethoven, Herbert Brun, Christian Wolff, Verdi, Donizetti and John Rutter at venues including Carnegie Hall, the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore among others.

He currently lives in the Baltimore suburbs with his wife, violinist, Meg Mizumoto and their two dogs, Dice and Billie.

*** Lesson Details ***
It's been my experience that an austere and tense environment causes austere and tense singing which is the exact opposite of what we're trying to accomplish together.

Voice and piano lessons are a partnership between the singer and the teacher: we both have a part in you or your child's progress and success. Singing and playing both require a positive attitude, a willingness to try new things and adequate preparation. That's what I hope to see from my students when they enter the studio and I will give the same energy and preparation in return.

After a few months in the studio, you or your child can expect to have a better understanding of how the voice works and tools and techniques employed by myself and the professionals responsible for my education and technique.

Furthermore, piano is fun! Singing is fun! Otherwise, we wouldn't do it...without getting paid for it at least, right? I have many individualistic goals planned for each lesson, but generally if you've had a good time, found some energy and learned something about either music or yourself, we've had a successful lesson. Everything else is a bonus for me. My students' experiences with me speak volumes and their successes in music and otherwise even moreso.

My three promises to you as a student:

1) I guarantee that you will have fun during the time you're with me! I know lessons can be intimidating and stressful, but they have to be fun and that's part of my job.

2) I promise that I will never ask you to do something that will harm your voice.

3) I stand behind my education and experiences: I've learned music from the best in the field and you will get nothing less than that from me during a lesson.

My three expectations of you:

1) Come willing to try new and different things in a low pressure environment. I don't bite...I swear.

2) Come prepared to sing and/or play. Why? If you want to sing or play piano, you have to sing or play. Relatively simple, right?

3) Come prepared to make mistakes because no performance is perfect by any standard. No lesson is perfect either and no lesson should be. Lessons are your opportunity to make mistakes without being judged, so make mistakes, commit to not making the same ones the next time and enjoy and appreciate the praise and feedback you get along the way. Singing is a journey that cannot be completed in a few one hour sessions, so I hope and expect that you won't treat it that way.

About Me

David is a successful singer/songwriter/guitarist out of Baltimore, MD. He has a bachelor's degree in Music with a concentration in composition from Salisbury University, where he also studied jazz and classical guitar . In the 18 years he has been performing (13 of those professionally) and playing guitar, he has released 4 CDs and written over 200 original songs. He has opened for major national acts like Journey, Maroon 5, Toby Keith, My Chemical Romance, The Used, Thrice, Story of the Year, The Bouncing Souls, Eric Hutchinson, Virginia Coalition and Graham Colton. In the process, he has performed at such notable venues as FedEx Field, Nationals Park, Jiffy Lube Live/Nissan Pavilion, the 9:30 Club, Rams Head Live and the Recher Theatre.

As a teacher, David has taught in numerous locations in the Maryland area for the last 16 years. His students generally range anywhere from 4-70+ years old and come from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of proficiency, from basic beginners to advanced. Some of his students have also gone on to pursue careers in music, others have just learned as a hobby, and some have been somewhere in between the two. All are welcome!

*** Lesson Details ***
As mentioned above, David enjoys teaching students from all different backgrounds and levels of proficiency. Whether you are just starting out or a virtuoso shredder in the making, he is happy to teach you! Over all, he is fairly laid back, as long as you practice. He usually combines work with reading off of the treble clef (what he likens to "eating your vegetables." You may not want to do it, but it will make you a healthier musician!) with learning more popular songs (or songs the student says they would like to learn) through tablature and chord charts, depending on the style of the song.

David is also very pro music theory. He usually incorporates music theory into the curriculum in conjunction with the material already being discussed. He is also very knowledgeable about composition/songwriting, and if the student is interested in learning more about this area, he is happy to share what he knows!

My passion for performing and teaching brought me to TakeLessons as a way to enrich the Baltimore community (and beyond through Skype lessons!) and help individual students perform at their best. As an operatic performer, I thoroughly understand the importance of building a strong technical background for any level of singing or professional speaking. My other skills, like instrumental instruction, studying skills, accent reduction, and academic preparation are all offered through TakeLessons as well. As a teacher, I love having fun in lessons and building strong connections with my students at absolutely any level. My personal musical performing experiences span opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, and R&B. A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy. He will sing the role of Marcello in The Boston Conservatory's production of La Boheme in April 2013, as well as a February opera scenes program which will include Cosi fan tutte and The Pearl Fishers.
Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni (2012), Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole (2012), L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges (2012), Pooh-Bah in The Mikado (2011), and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief (2011). Most recently, Zachary performed Character #7 in the ensemble chamber opera Transformations (Conrad Susa).

Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. My greatest desire in teaching is to see you grow! So, if a challenging, yet comforting, work environment sounds like something you would like to try, consider scheduling a trial lesson with me. I am a professional singer-songwriter and have been teaching lessons fulltime for the last 12 years. I teach students of all ages and levels of experience. My current range of students include: kids with learning/developmental disabilities, teenagers who have starred in school musicals, and performing adult singer-songwriters. Whatever your background or desire, I can help you to cultivate your unique musical potential, and to strengthen your creative voice.

As a professional vocalist and pianist, I have worked freelance, in a variety of settings, over the years--including solo, in wedding bands, small jazz and rock/pop groups and with big bands. I have been singing with the Mood Swings Big Band for 6+ years. During that time, we have performed at the White House, the Chamber of Commerce and in Kennebunkport, Maine (at the Bush estate).

I also have an extensive professional and personal background in meditation (10 years), astrology (5 years) and healing (particularly Reiki, 4 years). I am very interested in the intersection between a healing/mindfulness-awareness approach and singing/playing piano.

Jan E. Annapolis, MD

About Me

Jan grew up playing music on the piano, singing in the local Methodist Youth Group Choir, and playing various instruments. He also studied formal music theory at the Washington Conservatory of Music. In middle and high school, he continued to participate in choral singing and played saxophone in the school jazz ensembles. Jan continued to study music theory at the collegiate level, was in three choral ensembles, and took formal vocal training. He began to learn the guitar during this time as well, and shortly after graduating in 2005, started guitar instruction. Since then, he has participated professionally in many local ensembles ranging in styles from modern rock to jazz and blues. He recently finished up an original music project, The Booby Traps, which performed locally and regionally, having the privilege of performing at the Purple Fiddle in West Virginia and the 4-A-Cure Fest in Bulls Run, VA; hosted by TV personality Jim Vance. They recorded at the illustrious Omega Studios in Rockville, MD, and produced a music video for an original song named ‘Cruisin’. Omega has been a recording Mecca for artists like Prince and Elton John for decades. They won the Sound Off Live competition in 2013 and were featured artists at Baltimore's esteemed Artscape Festival; a three day event boasting an estimated 300,000 attendees! In addition, Jan produced an event with the legendary NightHawks in the summer of 2014 at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Club. This fine supper club is a historic theater in the heart of Bethesda, MD recently renovated to the tune of $8 million dollars. Currently Jan is involved in an original Pop Rock group from NYC, and will be recording and touring with them in the near future!
