If you are advance level , or close to advance, then you need to think about Musicians Institute level faculty to progress... as I do best with beginner skill levels. I focus on blues and rock content, because that's what I enjoy and that's what my band plays. Acoustic or electric guitar are fine, and when you come to my studio in Bixby Knolls section of Long Beach, you will see I offer plenty of room and great environment to relax and learn. If you do not have a guitar, I can provide for lessons. I also produce Guitar Lesson DVDs and jam-along CDs under the brand GuitarDVD Pro....and GuitarCD Pro...and these are available as effective optional tool to support the in-person lessons.

As a simple introduction, my name is Roy and I have been a musician and music teacher for over 35 years. Guitar is my principle instrument, although I also teach bass, beginning keyboards and drums.
Starting with my first piano lessons and continuing into college, I studied classical music, musicianship, ear training, and theory. After many years performing in bands and recording music I progressed to jazz theory, sight reading, and improvisation at Dick Grove’s Jazz Workshop in Studio City. Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orchestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting...

I am so excited to meet you! I have been performing ever since I can remember, doing talent shows, plays, musical theatre, and even television and film. Music has always been that quiet hum underneath all the noise that life brings. I began coaching vocalists and actors when I was attending Brigham Young University, studying Communications and Music. I found a new love of producing as I have directed and produced multiple musical showcases here in the USA, as well as in some parts of Europe. I have been able to see how the power of music changes lives, and you will experience that too!

I have been teaching voice, guitar and piano to students of all ages and levels for over 5 years now. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music with a BA in Songwriting and Vocal Studies. I teach mostly contemporary musical styles such as Pop/Rock/Country/R&B, but I have also trained and coached many students interested in pursuing musical theater and classical styles as well. I have performed live in countless venues in many cities both as a solo artist, and with a band as a sidewoman. I like to emphasize performance skills as well as the basic techniques. I also have a lot of experience in the recording studio, and I relate that to any student interested in recording. I am a piano teacher with BA in Music from Odessa State Academy of Music, Ukraine. Currently I live and work in Cypress, Orange County. Each student is going to progress at a different pace. I believe that all students can thrive in a learning environment that is stimulating, comforting and appropriate to their abilities. Music Lessons improve the mind, body and spirit. Also child development studies prove that Music Lessons improve school performance and grades. As I teach piano to my younger students, I look to help them develop life skills through music. For my older students I aspire to reduce stress in their lives. Regardless of age I work very hard to improve all of my student’s memory, brain function, and coordination and most importantly teach them how to simply have fun! I have been a student of the drums myself for 17 years. I started like many musicians have, learning to play a musical instrument in the school band. I picked up some drum sticks and haven't put them down since. My favorite styles of music are funk and rock. I have studied orchestral drumming, drumset, and music theory for 2 years at the collegiate level. I have taken several private lessons with well renown drummers and clinicians. Ranging from Dom Famularo and Phil Maturano, to Evan Stone and Dave Elitch. Please take the time to look them up and take in their amazing playing abilities. As a child I watched from the doorway as my older sister took her piano lessons. From that experience I taught myself to play the piano. My formal training came in college where I received my BA in Applied Music in piano and voice. I studied classical music and opera from a visiting professor from Peabody Conservatory, Baltimore MD. I graduated with honors and gave my Town Hall performance in the Spring of my Senior year. I had a passionate desire to be involved in music, to hear it and to perform it. I spent several years singing with the San Diego Opera Company, performing lead roles in Musical Theater and soloing in concerts from Monterrey to San Diego, CA. While still a student in college, I taught piano to children from the local community, so I have accumulated decades of teaching experience. I bring a dynamic and multifaceted perspective to the creative exploration of the percussive arts, with over 40 years of diverse musical experience which includes performing with Nigerian master drummer Francis Awe’s Talking Drum Ensemble, competing to top international honors with the Misty Isle Pipe Band, ensembles large and small covering music in a wide range of genres, as well as extended experience in solo accompaniment for modern dance and performance art. I have performed with renowned musicians such as Dave Holland, Albert Mangelsdorf, Bobby Bradford, Fred Katz, Lee Konitz, Don Thompson, Ralph Alessi, Vinny Golia, Karl Denson, Kei Akagi, among many others.

Having fun while learning is my philosophy. Your math, reading, and comprehension skills improve greatly with the practice and skills of performing in music.

My passion for music and teaching goes way back when I wrote my first song at age 9 about an American Indian girl- I HAVE NO INDIAN BLOOD IN ME- but somehow I felt a connection- possibly something I learned at school or on TV. That experience- it changed and improved the evolution of my maturing through today. I was able to express my thoughts and facts I have learned through a song! Musical instruments- I played the guitar and piano on that first recording and my voice; and wrote out the lyrics and music notes! It gave me such confidence in myself. I felt I had achieved a great deal and won some educational contests and received great respect from my teachers.

I absolutely love to teach, but not just because of my love for the drums or my life-long appreciation of music, but because of my enjoyment of people and the learning process itself. I feel that this is important to mention, because if I didn’t enjoy what I did and take pride in working with people, then my teaching skills, curriculum, and experience would mean nothing. As anybody who has played a musical instrument can attest to, learning something new is difficult, and having a patient teacher who enjoys working with people is mandatory.
