First, some exciting news! I just became a part of takelessons online lesson program, and now I can teach students from anywhere in the country! But I digress...
Let's see, first and foremost I'm a music lover of the highest order. Whether it's jazz, rock, indie, classical, hip-hop or country, if it's good music, I love it.
I grew up obsessively listening to everything i could get my hands on, and began playing guitar at the age of 11. That was cut short, though, when the next year I almost lost my middle finger on my left hand in an ice skating incident. It took 5 years for me to regain the strength and motion, during which time I was forced to give up guitar playing altogether. I never lost my passion for music, though, and in my heart i never stopped dreaming about what it would be like to be a professional musician. When I went away to college, I studied political science, but I also brought an acoustic guitar with me, and soon I was spending every free minute I could spare playing that guitar. I didn’t begin seriously studying music, though, until I was almost 20 yrs old and in my 3rd year of college, and for years I was kicking myself for waiting so long. However, getting a bit of a late start motivated me to practice twice as hard, and now thirteen years later, I look at what happened as a total blessing. Having been deprived of playing music for so long, I truly appreciate and am thankful for every day that I get to make my living in music. It's something that I will never take for granted and it keeps me from ever getting bitter or jaded. As a teacher, my experiences have given me a unique perspective which allows me to really connect with my students. I vividly remember the difficulties and challenges I faced as a beginner, and that allows me to be proactive in helping my students avoid some of the pitfalls that I had to go through.

I try to take into account each student’s specific goals and musical tastes to design a course of study that will both challenge them and keep them motivated and excited about what they’re learning. I believe that, even when working on challenging, difficult material, students should enjoy themselves, and that it’s the teacher’s responsibility to present the material in a way that will facilitate that for the student. I have a genuine respect for every student, regardless of their ability level, goals, musical tastes, age or gender, and I always take the time to get to know my students and adapt their lessons to best suit their individual learning styles.
I also try as often as possible to take advantage of the fact that I teach out of a fully functional recording studio, with amps, mics, my guitars, bass, mandolin, drum set and my midi keyboard which is connected to my computer which serves as the studio's hub. This allows me to record video and audio of lessons to let the students see and hear themselves and monitor they’re progress. I can record video and audio examples of warm-ups and exercises, create backing tracks for students to practice with, even record demos for those students interested in writing original music.

I am offering singing lessons using a natural, easy-to-understand, experience-based holistic and scientific method. The aim is to freely express the natural and style-free voice, which can be consciously applied to any musical style. Sing with ease, energized and flowing breath, solid technique, resonance, projection, diction, range and poise. No previous experience is necessary. Adults and children of all ages, voice types, backgrounds and levels from beginner to professional are welcome.
I taught singers from such diverse backgrounds as opera, musical theater, pop, soul, R&B, bluegrass, rock, heavy metal and public speaking. I taught voice at The Boston Conservatory, also at The Quincy Point Music Academy and A Street Music in Quincy, Massachusetts. I am a member of Boston Singers' Resource as singer and voice teacher/coach, and maintain studios in Somerville and Quincy.
I played in different groups including The Istanbul State Theater Orchestra under the direction of conductor Onder Bali, also collaborated with jazz and rock artists in Istanbul and Boston. I am the drummer of the band, The Cross Roads. I taught drums at The Quincy Point Music Academy and A Street Music in Quincy, Massachusetts. My drum studio is open to adults and children of all ages, backgrounds and levels from beginner to professional. I maintain a private studio in Somerville.

My vocal method is mainly based on Giovanni Battista Lamperti's Vocal Wisdom, combined with my own knowledge, experiences and discoveries as a singer. It has been deeply influenced by countless singers from many genres including Cicek Kanter (my teacher at the conservatory), Franco Corelli, Edita Gruberova, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Bryn Terfel, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Gordon MacRae, among others.
My drum method is based on my own experiences as a drummer, combined with teachings of artists such as Buddy Rich, Dave Weckl and Terry Bozzio.
The main piano method I use is Faber Piano Adventures. My technical and teaching approach has largely been influenced by artists such as Nazan Akin (my teacher at the conservatory), Eunyoung Kim (my longtime concert collaborator), Idil Biret, Marc-Andre Hamelin, Yuja Wang, Bill Evans and Chick Corea, combined with my own experiences as a pianist and drummer (as piano is a percussion instrument).
I am a piano-playing singer/songwriter and graduate of Berklee College of Music with a degree in Professional Music focusing on songwriting, performance, and teaching. I was a leader of my high school music ministry (choir) for four years (Bishop Brady H.S., Concord NH) and volunteered as a 2nd grade Sunday School teacher (Immaculate Heart of Mary, Concord, NH) in my senior year. I have several years of performance experience having performed at The Farm Bar & Grille in Essex, MA, the Lizard Lounge and Cantab Lounge both in Cambridge, MA. I have appeared on Community Auditions (2011) and compose music for local independent film company Door Eleven Productions. I have long had a passion for music and would feel rewarded to be able to pass my knowledge onto you! I am friendly, patient and open to just about any genre of music you would be interested in exploring. I am also able to provide a solid foundation of proper breath management, vocal exercises focusing on pitch and technique, and sight-reading. My goal is for you to be able to thoroughly develop your skills as a singer and performer!

I am laid-back but hardworking and expect an equal level of commitment from my students. I am primarily interested in teaching beginner-intermediate level pupils. Prospective students can expect to start each lesson with vocal exercises focusing on breath support, posture and pitch. Any professional performer understands the importance of warming up prior to performing! Once properly warmed up, you give your voice the range and flexibility it needs to sing beautifully and effectively! I encourage note-taking as well as recording the lessons either on cassette or even your cellphone to assist in practicing on your own between lessons. Depending on my students level of experience, I will then decide which songs to work on that would best fit your range and area of interest. Once a certain amount of progress has been made I will open the doors to my students deciding on songs they'd like to work on specifically as well. After 3-6 months, I would anticipate my students to be able to effectively warm-up their voices on their own through exercises we will have covered, at least a basic understanding of how to sight-read your melody and certainly have a handful of songs memorized and ready to add to your repertoire!

I would bring my keyboard to each lesson unless one was provided (tuned pianos are okay as well). I would also bring music and texts that I would find beneficial to each particular student. I would expect my student to provide a journal to take notes and track progress. Also, though not necessary in all cases, I would expect my student to have sheet music for songs they're interested in learning as well as CD/cassette/MP3/etc. of songs they're interested in learning.

I would start with a foundation of proper warm-ups, breathing techniques, and vocal exercises with me accompanying on piano. We would then spend the second half of the lesson working on songs primarily of my students choosing. I would be comfortable with just about any genre thus being able to cater to each one of my student's unique areas of interest.

Kat is an enthusiastic and patient contemporary string player specializing in teaching violin and viola. Growing up she played violin and viola in school and community orchestras, as well as bass in jazz bands and small ensembles. She is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where she studied viola/violin with Mimi Rabson, who is leader of the Really Electric String Quartet and has toured with Itzhak Perlman on his klezmer project, and Melissa Howe of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. At Berklee, Kat majored in Film Scoring (writing music for film and TV), so she is accomplished in composition as well as performance. She has performed onstage with music greats from all over the world including: Brazilian singer Rosa Passos, Cuban bassist Cachao, alternative rock singer Paul Cole, and Christopher Guest from "This is Spinal Tap."
As a teacher Kat utilizes her training in and experience playing a diverse range of styles in her lessons. She has taught private lessons and also taught music as a camp counselor and tutor.
