Drum, Piano, Music Performance, Music Recording, Music Theory, Percussion, Songwriting
I was born in Amsterdam, Holland, where my father worked as an opera singer. While listening to vocal warm-up arpeggios, my mother bounced me on her knee and taught me rhythms and rhymes.
Now I live in Brooklyn, NY. I play in off-Broadway shows, tour and gig with rock/funk/Afro-beat bands, play percussion with a Flamenco band, and accompany dance classes. I teach private lessons, and work with after-school programs. I'm teaching a high school class called "The Spirit of Jazz". I owe all it to my great teachers, and my musical upbringing.
In my family we beatbox, play piano, and sing together. The family moved to the States in 1995 where my parents worked as music teachers. My Dad is a voice professor at the University of Wisconsin, and my Mom runs an amazing music program at Country View Elementary School in Verona, WI.
In the small town of Verona I played in the band program throughout high-school where I had an amazing and demanding music teacher and highly talented friends. The drumset became my passion and I played, blissfully and recklessly, as often possible. Our teacher took the high school band on a concert tour of Europe in 2002 in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Italy.
The band program led me to classical and contemporary music at the University of Wisconsin, where I honed my craft and discovered the profound breadth of music around the world. I worked as a member of the WI Army National Guard Band, a great wind ensemble with jazz and rock band components, and slowly built a career as a musician. I took every gig that came my way and created my own if nobody was calling. Pretty soon I became “the guy in, like, 8 different bands”, including Funk, Rock, Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and West African bands. I’ve been working as a musician ever since.
I began teaching drum lessons to my friends when I was about 18 and realized I was really good at it. I began taking on private students and teaching group lessons and classes. Students of mine have achieved the highest ranks at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival in Wisconsin, and auditioned into the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestra.
I am on the annual faculty Wildcat Percussion Camp, was adjunct faculty at New York University, and directed the world percussion ensemble at the University of Wisconsin. I've worked as a teacher with the Madison Area School District, Wisconsin Youth Company, YMCA, and many more programs. I currently work as a teaching artist with Global Arts to Go and Apex for Youth in many different public schools in the New York metro area.
I’ve learned how to be a real teacher, to put myself in your shoes to help you achieve your potential as a drummer, and as a musician. My teaching style is to de-mystify the art of percussion: getting great sounds out of the drums, being prepared for any style, practicing productively, and focusing your mind.
I have a Bachelor’s degree in classical percussion from the University of Wisconsin, a Masters degree in Jazz Performance from NYU, and have traveled to Africa, Europe, and Latin America to perform, record, and study. I have performed with Badal Roy (Miles Davis), Chris Potter, Kenny Werner, Brad Shepik, Lenny Pickett, Chuchito Valdez, and many other great musicians. I was Adjunct Faculty at NYU’s jazz program, and at the University of Wisconsin dance program. I’ve given masterclasses at Juilliard, University of Michigan, Lawrence Conservatory, and many other colleges.
I've recorded on 11 commercially available albums and have been involved in many other projects. Ask me anything you want in our music lessons!

Born and raised in Ocean County New Jersey. Matt started playing Guitar at 11 and kept going from there. In 2003 Matt was featured on MTV's Made (and has since been hired back as a consultant). He started giving private lessons in 2004 until 2008 when a constant touring schedule kept Matt from being able to be in one place long enough to continue with private lessons. But now he's off the road and able to give 16 years of playing and 10 years of performance experience to you no matter what your age or experience with music.
Drum, Piano, Music Performance, Music Theory, Percussion
I started playing drums in my parents' basement when I was 9 years old. It was just me, a stereo, and a bunch of cardboard boxes I made into my first drumset. Every day, I listened to to my favorite songs over and over again to figure out how to play them. To me, there was nothing more awesome in the world than music.
Since then my musical journey has taken me far and wide. I've studied percussion and composition with world class teachers, toured Europe, composed music for commercials, co-written award winning songs, and performed with a variety of artists at such venues as the Hard Rock Cafe, BB King's, World Cafe, 55 Bar, The Living Room, The Bitter End, Shrine, Rockwood Music Hall, and many others. And the one thing that hasn't changed? I'm still totally in awe of it all.
These experiences have helped me to create my own style of teaching that's tailored to each student, whether they want to learn music purely for the enjoyment of it, or take their studies further. Sharing my knowledge and life experience with people is a great feeling. I really enjoy teaching -- In fact, I've learned just as much from teaching my students as they've learned from me.
I continue to perform, teach, and compose original music in New York City with my wife and two pianos.
My Education/Credits: Percussion, Berklee College of Music / Masters in Classical Composition from Aaron Copland School of Music, Queens College.
Bass Guitar, Drum, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory
Born and raised in LA County, I was brought to the east coast on scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music where I was part of the inaugural class of Danilo Perez's Global Jazz Institute. Since graduating I have been living and working primarily in New York City as a drummer, teacher, accompanist and producer.
Growing up in a musical household, I got my first pair of sticks and a practice pad as a 9-year-old. A year later, with the addition of a real drum set to my arsenal, I already knew I was hooked. Music has a way of comforting and teaching, and sharing that with students is a both a privilege and responsibility. I feel thankful to be able to teach and play for a living and want to spread that to my students.
Some of my notable performance and teaching venues include Blue Note, Kennedy Center, The Jazz Bakery, Carnegie Hall, Beantown Jazz Festival, House of Blues Sunset, ABC's Good Morning America, Webster Hall, Panama Jazz Festival, Costa Rica Jazz Festival, and El Conservatorio de Música de Puerto Rico.
Notable personnel include Ralph Peterson, Hoodini and KinG!, Andy McGhee, Fred Wesley, Kenny Barron, Dave Samuels, Kenny Wollesen, Lin Biviano and I have been billed alongside Grammy winners Editas and the RZA.
These experiences vary greatly from style to venue to instrument played. However these days, versatile experience creates the complete musician, and that is what I strive for with my students.

Thanks for checking out my profile. I look forward to helping you reach your musical goals in drum and percussion! Here's a little info about my musical training:
Born in Istanbul, Turkey and raised in Tulsa, OK, my first musical experiences were on my grandmother's old piano. I was later introduced to a drum set when my brother and I received a drum set as a gift. I played in several local bands and in my high school jazz band in Tulsa, playing a range of musical styles from rock, swing, funk, and latin. I decided in my senior year of high school to take music seriously and moved to NYC to study at the Drummer's Collective. During this period, I also focused on Middle Eastern hand percussion (doumbek, riq, and frame drum) and studied with Mehmet Akatay in Turkey. After receiving my certificate at the Drummer's Collective, I applied and was accepted to the New School Jazz and Contemporary Music Program in NYC, where I received my BA in Music. Since my graduation, I've been working as a freelance musician, playing with my band Manner and other groups, producing music for commercials, and teaching students in the Jersey City, NJ, and New York / Brooklyn, NY area.
