Songwriting is one of my favorite things to teach. If you believe that it 'cannot be taught' I would say that I would've agreed with prior to my 5 years at Berklee studying Songwriting. If you can study writing and poetry, you can certainly learn how to communicate your emotional thoughts in a more poetic and poignant way. There are so many tools out there I never would have guessed and I use them daily in my own songwriting
My name is Zarni and I am a recent graduate from the Berklee College of Music with a Bachelors in Music Education and Songwriting. Most recently I won Most Promising Music Educator Award in the Choral department, an award given by the Dean of the Berklee College of Music.

After years of teaching all levels, and many different styles of voice and piano lessons, I can tell you this-- I LOVE teaching! Basically, songwriting is the result of life experience/perspective and musical influence. What you listen to and how you see the world has an enormous impact on what you create as a songwriter. This will be a big topic of discussion in our lessons to ensure that your songs are genuine and powerful.
First, what is your instrument and your skill level as a player and singer? If you haven't had much experience singing and playing an instrument, we'll have to start there. We will first improve your skills as a vocalist and instrumentalist, then coordinate those skills by singing and playing songs that already exist. We will discuss and examine your influences and songs/song ideas of your own, if you have them. Establishing your voice as an artist is our number one priority. We will study songs and artists of many different genres and by example, you will create your own ideas in these styles.
You know a fair amount of cover songs, have songs of your own, ...

I have been teaching voice and music lessons for several years now to a wide range and variety of students. Other students come to me just to have a really great time. All my students grow from their experiences learning music with me. I use a variety of methods and it all depends on what you, as a student, are needing from your lessons.

Songwriting is different than composition. The main difference would be that songwriting combines lyrics with musical accompaniment in harmonizing the two. Also, songwriting is synonymous with pop music whereas composition is not.
Despite this broad explanation, songwriting is as rewarding as composing. After learning some theory and songwriting form, I can guarantee that you'll be surprised with your new craft.
Indeed as a kid, I was simply blown away as to how music showcases almost endless stimulating possibilities. This in terms of structure, different genres, discordance, harmony, tamber, melody and rhythm. For it would be these very profound attributes noticed back then that sustain me today.
As a young aspiring musician, "universal" would be last words out of an poor observers mouth. This especially when describing my several attempts in playing speed metal on my sisters viola. It would be these sort of behaviors that summoned my father to buy his resourceful son a electric guitar and amp. The rest was history. A history plagued with disturbing reverberations along my parents bedroom walls and garage doors. This while placing a heavy burden on their pocket books in ...
