Seattle Vocalists Sing More than Songs

By David M. - Seattle Singing Teacher

The term “song,” according to the Encarta World English Dictionary is “a usually relatively short musical composition consisting of words set to music and the music itself.” Words are the common thread in songs, which differentiates them from “pieces” or “tunes” in music terminology. But what happens when words go out the window?

Seattle has vocalists that explore that realm, and welcome you to come along on the journey. On the first and third Sunday of each month, Studio VOX! presents “Sundays at LUCID,” a vocal improvisation group. This gathering is open to vocalists of all levels of experience who wish to explore group improvisations, and is led by the wonderfully knowledgeable and lighthearted Debby Watt. Singers are guided with exercises in rhythm melody, and spoken word. It is s safe and exciting adventure for any singer I have highly enjoyed several times. If you are taking singing lessons in Seattle, I would highly recommend joining in.

The next artist that stretches the boundaries of what we expect to hear from a vocalist is a solo project by Seattle multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer Beth Fleenor. In this project, “Crystal Beth,” she utilizes loop pedals, effects processors, clarinet, and an expansive vocal vocabulary, weaving unique sonic tapestries that break the preconceptions of how much sound can come from one person alone. With influences ranging from contemporary classical, jazz, rock, tribal, Ukrainian, and countless other styles she has under her impressive musical belt, this powerhouse of an artist delivers a sonic experience you will not soon forget.

While we will always love songs, I invite singers to see the powerful things a voice can do without saying a word. Check out some of these talented performers and let them influence your own techniques when you take singing lessons in Seattle.
