Rulon B. Issaquah, WA

With a Bachelor of Music from Cornish College of the Arts, I'm a working pro with years of experience teaching and performing across North & Central America.

About Rulon

Music is a joyful act of sharing, so I try to teach and perform with this philosophy in mind.

I have 18 years teaching experience and have toured the U.S. extensively as a performer, composer and teacher (working with people of all ages and skill). Recently, the U.S. State Department contracted me to represent the U.S. in a tour of Nicaragua teaching and playing for the International Jazz Festival with my band.

My musical passions include Latin music, gospel, and modern Music. I toured for three years with a Celtic trio, have played lead alto/tenor books in numerous show and big bands, and have rocked it with Soul, Ska, Punk, Funk, and Latin Bands of every shape.

In addition to my own music, I composer, perform, and record music for film, TV, video games and other creative ...

I am an adult who has little music background. Before signing up the lessons, I was hesitated whether a teacher would be impatient to teach someone like me. A friend who plays in orchestra encouraged me and went through several sax teachers' profiles and picked Rulon for me.

And it turns out that Rulon is really great. Without doubt on his professional knowledge, but also that he is a very encouraging. He has more faith in me than I have in myself. He explores my strength and uncovers it; he also finds my problem and tailored a procedure for me to improve.

I would highly recommend him as a teacher. But wait, please don't compete with my schedule. :-)

Songwriting
Great teacher who allows his students to express their creativity.

This summer I started getting into digital music composing and began writing my own songs. Rulon has been very helpful in focusing my ideas and teaching me how to be a better composer. He has helped me develop my song ideas and taught me to focus on the melody and song structure rather than on effects and instruments. I really enjoy my lessons and like that Rulon provides critical feedback of my work but allows me to develop my own ideas. I have learned a lot from my lessons and feel that my songwriting skills have improved substantially.

Great teacher, great communicator, professional all the way

When choosing a teacher, it's very important to have someone who can teach at multiple levels of experience, Rulon does this as well as helping to establish goals and assuring you meet those goals.

Excellent in both instruments and voice

I took voice lessons from Michael C. and he was very easy to work with. He always provided excellent feedback and knew my strengths and weaknesses and where to focus. He provided each week a lesson with detailed tasks and wanted to keep me on track. He didn't waste any time and was prompt and professional in all dealings. I highly recommend him.

This Berklee grad knows his stuff!

I had already been playing guitar for about 10 years or so by the time I started taking lessons with Michael (so definitely not a beginner), and although my playing techniques were already pretty decent, I knew my knowledge of music theory paled in comparison and needed some work. Michael was able to easily assess where I was at and start me on a path of further music enlightenment. Before the end of my first lesson, it became clear just how much I had to learn and that Michael's musical prowess went beyond what he was teaching me.

Rather than just giving me pre-made handouts, Michael would have blank manuscript paper with which he would walk me through the theory as he was writing it out. This was extremely helpful in understanding the lesson. Michael can be flexible with his lesson plans, so if there's something specific you want to get into, he will teach if he feels you're ready.

Michael’s extensive knowledge of music theory was a big help in developing me more as a songwriter and composer. Even if you’re already an advanced player, I would definitely recommend this teacher if you are looking to broaden your musical literacy.

What a terrible experience. I signed up for lessons for my wife from Brett as a gift because he listed times that would work for my wife given that we have a young daughter, and have a hard time making time for lessons. Brett told us 3 days before the lesson that the time wouldn't work, then simply never showed for the rescheduled first lesson. Worse, he simply refused to do scheduling via email (he would leave voicemails and failed to return my wife's call when she called back as they were playing phone tag), and then told us he had another commitment during the slot we had supposedly reserved for him. Worse, he failed to update the site as he continually cancelled lessons and never showed up for scheduled times. I now have a huge hassle of getting a refund on the money I paid for lessons as opposed to a lovely gift for my wife. Life's too short and we're too busy for such an awful experience.

Great teacher for my young daughter

Brett has been a great teacher for my 5 year old daughter. She is just learning the basics of piano and Brett has been great at expanding her skill sets. She really enjoys practicing with him and actually looks forward to when he comes over every week!

Fantastic for our 10-year old son...

Brett is fantastic with our 10-year old son who just enjoys playing piano and isn't looking to become a concert pianist someday. So many kids are miserable playing the same boring things over and over and Brett really listened to our needs and just nurtures our son's interest in music. Bravo!

John Paul S. Seattle, WA

I have a full, working studio in my apartment. Let's record some songs!

About John Paul

I have been teaching voice and music lessons for several years now to a wide range and variety of students. I have successfully helped individuals learn how to sing, speak, act, write songs, and play the piano. Some students come to me to build their confidence or skills. Other students come to me just to have a really great time. All my students grow from their experiences learning music with me. I use a variety of methods and it all depends on what you, as a student, are needing from your lessons.

My background is diverse. I have written and recorded dozens of musical albums over the last decade. I often perform for music and theater events in Seattle and Washington. I have a bachelor of science in contemporary vocal performance and a master of arts in information and learning ...

John Paul is an amazingly talented artist (performer, writer, teacher, singer, producer, composer, director...the list is seriously too long). We have worked together as professional singers, and I have collaborated with him on an album that he wrote/produced/recorded/edited himself. He is a kind and inspiring person who LOVES music more than anything in the world. I wholeheartedly recommend him to students of all ages who want to find and express their creative voice in the world.

Best teacher ever

JP has been teaching Mya for almost 2 years (since she was 6 years old) and Mya has been loving each lesson, can't wait for the next one, and has grown in many ways, that have exceeded our expectations.
JP is extremely patient, always positive, and knows how to reinforce the confidence whenever needed, provide clues for improvement that are very useful and positive. JP is an outstanding teacher.
The lessons are always a good mix of warming up, theory, singing, expressing emotions, new creations and also recording.
JP brings the best out of Mya, and makes her feel that he is also enjoying it.

Great Teacher!

Katie Ilen is an amazing singer with a knack for teaching. She is patient, kind, informative and highly skilled. My daughter loves her and talks about her all the time. After taking lessons with Katie my daughter has gotten so much better it is surprising. Katie also incorporates recording into her lessons and now we have 2 adorable recordings of my daughter singing. Priceless! Highly recommended!
