Liz J. Sonoma, CA

Subjects Taught

Acting, Broadway Singing, Flute, Guitar, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Piano, Singing, Songwriting, Ukulele

About Me

After graduating California Institute of the Arts with a multi-focus on several aspects of music including African dance, Indonesian gamelan, songwriting, recording, classical voice and piano, folk guitar, and more, Liz had the excellent opportunity to teach theater to a local musical theater summer youth program. All summer, she taught class sizes ranging from 10 to 26 students of the ages 5-10. Her initiative later led to being hired at this local community theater. Along with this theater teaching experience, she has been teaching piano, guitar, ukulele, flute & voice lessons for over 9 years. Her students have gone from knowing nothing about music to learning and performing entire pieces on their own as well as even auditioning & for agents and becoming signed artists in Los Angeles. Liz knows that it is her place in the world to teach music & spread positivity through her own music and would love nothing more than make learning music a positive and fun experience for everyone.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach out of the Alfred's Piano course, but am open to trying out any music books you may already have in your home. I do expect my students to purchase the books they would like to learn out of and to have the material I have given them for homework ready, completed, and practiced by the time we have our weekly lesson. I recommend at least twenty to thirty minutes of practice every day, and will give rewards for having practiced well, and for performing well in our lessons. I would love it for my students to be clear on what they would like to learn, and I love using songs that the student enjoys to make his or her music learning process fun.

*** Studio Equipment ***
In my home studio, I have a full size Cable-Nelson upright piano, as well as two ukuleles, and two guitars (one acoustic-electric and one electric).

*** Travel Equipment ***
When I travel, I bring my own instrument that the student is learning on so that I can demonstrate, as well as a music stand if necessary.

*** Specialties ***
Pop, folk, opera, musical theater, classical, rock, reggae

*** Lesson Details ***
Students can expect to learn proper hand/foot technique and all of the skills necessary to facilitate independence on the drum-set. Students will be given the tools to expand their vocabulary on the drum-set so that they can begin their own improvisation exercises, which will eventually lead to developing their own unique musical style. The first part of a lesson is spent working on hand technique on a practice pad before moving to the drum-set. From there, students will learn grooves, fills, drum solos, and various exercises to help them become better. Students are also welcome to ask about drum parts to their favorite songs if they want to learn them. The lesson is really tailored to each individual student! Learning how to count is an essential part of learning to play the drums and after a short time students will be able to count as they play and understand what notes they are playing in any given subdivision. Most of all, the lessons are always fun. Learning music should be a joyful and exciting time and something to look forward to!

*** Studio Equipment ***
2 full drum-sets, practice pad set-up, recording equipment, electronic drum- set

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have a practice pad, drum sticks, and a drum set.

*** Specialties ***
I teach proper technique and am able to teach all styles and genres.

I specialize in Rock Drumming.

Peter E. Santa Rosa, CA

Subjects Taught

Audition Prep, Ear Training, Flugelhorn, Music Theory, Trumpet

About Me

I have been teaching private lessons for over 30 years. I work with students on the mechanics of trumpet playing which lead to the ability to execute solid fundamentals consistently. This allows my students to function in a variety of musical settings with a secure foundation. Any player can improve if they apply a well-considered approach to material appropriate for their current level of development. My strength as a teacher (and player) lies in my versatility, patience, and persistence (as well as my sense of humor and ability to connect with students and players as human beings). Ear training and music theory are taught as an integrated support for trumpet performance. Audition preparation rests on the work that has occurred during lessons which is supported by consistent, daily practice.
