I love sharing my passion for music with my students. They describe me as a Fun, Patient, Punctual, and Organized teacher.

I hold a B.A. degrees in Music and Spanish from San Jose State University, and have 15 years experience in teaching and performing.

My musical palette encompasses Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Symphonic, Opera, Reggae, Funk, Rock, R&B.

I am very fortunate to have shared the stage with many masters in the Jazz and Afro-Cuban/Salsa scenes, notably: Karl Perazzo and Jeff Cressman (of Santana), Louie Romero (Hector Lavoe and Wille Colon) Wayne Wallace (Wayne Wallace Quintet) the famous salsa vocalist Tito Nieves, Cuban-born vocalist Fito Reinoso,
legendary Bolivian charango player Eddy Navia, Bolivian guitarist Gabriel Navia, Eric Rangel y su Orquesta America, Julio Bravo y su Orquesta Salsabor, and the Pacific Mambo Orchestra.

Besides music, I enjoy salsa dancing. I have been dancing for ten years and have been teaching salsa dancing for three years. I also believe in furthering my communication skills. I belong to my local public speaking Toastmaster club for 2 years. I also enjoy art very much and have been drawing as a hobby for three years.

*** Lesson Details ***
My first belief is that music lessons should be fun and help foster self esteem as well as self confidence in musical expression. I believe in a safe and encouraging learning environment filled with curiosity, exploration, and laughter.

During the lessons I concentrate the building blocks of musicianship as we switch off from accompanist and lead roles in the musical examples in the lesson books. I also focus on music theory by discussing chord / scale relationships and how to apply them to improvisation or composition. I also stress students be able to vocalize what they play to help with their ear-training.

I strongly believe in student performances. I prepare my students to perform in recitals, performance groups, as well as auditions and entrance exams.

Buying instruments can be very confusing. I go the extra mile to help my students buy the right instrument and accessories by accompanying them to the music store and offer my feedback. Parents and students feel they've made the right choice after careful thought goes into the purchase of their instruments.

Whether you just want to play in a band or major in music, you can learn how to enjoy playing music and build your confidence on your instrument at your own pace.

I have 15 years of experience as a tutor. I have had my own private tutoring business. My area of expertise is math (basic arithmetic to“ pre-calculus); however, I have tutored in English (grammar and writing), Computer science (Word, Works, Windows OS, and other general computer problems), as well as other subjects. In addition, I also have 10 years of experience working with after school programs both as a tutor and as a recreational instructor. About Me

Mrs. Taiwo Kujichagulia-Seitu is a coloratura soprano, dancer, educator and griot (historian, storyteller, entertainer, musician, praise singer). With a performance history spanning over 2 decades, Taiwo has performed for such legends as Kathrine Dunham, Geronimo Ji Jaga Pratt, Nelson Mandela, Regina Bell, Pharaoh Sanders, and Dizzy Gillespie. She has performed with Phavia Kujichagulia and Ma’at, E.W. Wainwright’s African Roots of Jazz, Omega, Imhotep Dance Ensemble, the Houston Ebony Opera Guild, Oakland Opera Theater, Lyric Theater of San Jose and N’Soromma African Drummers and Dancers (an ensemble she co-founded).

Functionally using the arts to tell the history of African Americans, Taiwo weaves inspiring and uplifting tales for audiences of all ages utilizing a combination of Spirituals, Gospel, Praise Dance and traditional West African dance and drumming. Taiwo’s annual production entitled “Go Tell It! – A Harriet Tubman Christmas Story” premiered in December 2012. Receiving rave reviews for its 2012 and 2013 productions, “Go Tell It!” has become a Bay Area Holiday tradition and a Black History Month staple. “Go Tell It!” tells the story of Harriet Tubman’s first escape with passengers on the Underground Railroad. Told through music and dance, a highlight of “Go Tell It!” is the cast’s moving performances of Taiwo’s original arrangements of many well-known and loved Spirituals. Honored by the Friends of Negro Spirituals as a Negro Spirituals Heritage Keeper, in addition to arranging Spirituals, Taiwo lectures on their development, correct historical context and the coding found within.

A passionate educator of 15 years, Taiwo has taught West Aftican dance at Prairie View A&M University; Hip-hop, Stepping, West African and Liturgical dance for Stanford University; and dance and musical theater at Kids N’ Dance. Currently, Taiwo teaches music for Berkeley City College, and is the dance and 2nd grade teacher at Ile Omode School. Taiwo has a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance and a Master of Business Administration in marketing. She is the co-founder of Lyric Dance and Vocal Ensemble (LDVE), Lyric Performing Arts Academy (LPAA) and Lyric Performing Arts Foundation (LPAF). Currently, Taiwo serves as Chief Executive Officer for both LPAA and LPAF.

In addition to this all, Taiwo is a wife and mother and enjoys spending time with her loving husband, Obara ‘Six’ Awoyefa, and daughters, Sassafras Rose and Saije Orisa-Damilola Awoyefa.
