Rob (aka R.J.): Born in Detroit, Michigan, RJ studied r&b and jazz from Motown drummers and Funk Brothers Benny Benjamin and Uriel Jones. From the age of fifteen he played in rhythm & blues and jazz combos around Detroit. He then studied privately with Berklee School of Music drum maestro, Gene Stuart,studied with mallet studies with Mark Johnson and earned a Bachelors Degree from Michigan State University, moved to San Francisco and studied North Indian percussion and tabla with Zakir Hussain, trap set with jazz recording artists George Marsh. He is a consummate producer, performer, recording artist and teacher. He plays and teaches all styles of rhythm including jazz, funk, blues, rock, latin, and world fusion. I love to sing, and I have a passion for teaching students to sing well. I have sung in choruses all my life, and have been inspired by fine conductors and great composers. I am certain that music enlivens my life like nothing else, and it can do that for everyone. Whether you sing in the shower, or in the choir, or with a few friends, or in an opera, you can find your song.

Learning to play the piano, from the very beginning, or picking up where you left off in the past, will bring a spark to your life. Whether you want to play for yourself or some friends, or want to get on track to becoming a concert pianist, music will enrich your life.

I’ve played keyboards and sang professionally for the last 25 years. During that time my home has been in the San Francisco Bay Area but I have performed all over the country and have toured several times in Germany, Switzerland, and Japan. I’m a two time winner of the West Coast Songwriters “Song Of The Year Award” and I write music and lyrics as well as record and produce songs for myself and others.

Over those years I’ve developed a wealth of knowledge and experience that I’m very excited to share with my students. I want you to tell me what your musical dreams are and we will develop a plan to reach them and I will be honored to guide you there.

I love to sing, I love to act and I love to teach! I have been teaching for over 10 years and sincerely value bringing music and theater into people’s lives. My teaching philosophy is simple; anyone can sing, each person has something wonderful to offer and everyone deserves a chance to shine.

With that in mind, here is a little background on me and my journey to becoming a teacher.
I graduated from California State University, Northridge in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education with an emphasis on voice and choral conducting. At the age of 15, I was accepted into the California State Summer School for the Arts on a full merit scholarship in the field of Theater. There, I studied acting, directing, singing, writing, stage combat, voice, set design, lighting and sound. I have been playing guitar and performing for over 30 years. I have played in many bands playing rock, pop, country and blues. I was on the road for many years and opened for Elvin Bishop, Marty Balin (Jefferson Airplane) and Canned Heat. I have a Certificate of Completion from the Guitar Institute of Technology in Hollywood, CA, and am a Certified Operator of Pro Tools. I want to share my knowledge and experience of the guitar and performing with my students in a way that they not only learn to play the guitar well but also develop the passion for music that will last them a lifetime. So whether you just want to play in your living room or play on a professional level and perform, I would love to help you get there.

From the moment Kat was tall enough to reach the keys she made so much noise on her family’s piano that they eventually bought a kid-sized version to keep in her room. When Kat turned 7 her family got her the best present ever; lessons with an amazing piano teacher.

Kat also began to study flute several years later and soon realized that music was the life for her. She majored in music in both high school and college graduating with a BA in Music from St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin.

Kat has had a very diverse career in music. From a full time private music teacher to the Musical Director of a Burning Man Opera, to the Section Leader for a Youth Orchestra, to the keyboard player in a Theatrical Heavy Metal Band, Kat is always thrilled to stretch her wings and try new things.

My Teaching:
I love to teach music to all ages, and have taught hundreds of students in the last 15 years. What you can expect from me is a clear, patient, and understanding teacher who is able to able to meet you where you are on your musical journey, and assist you to expand your knowledge and mastery of the instrument, usually having a lot of fun along the way. I am very comfortable even with teens who know what they want to learn, as well as absolute beginners and kids who need %100 guidance in there practice. I really enjoy students who come to me with some experience and want to learn songs that they love. I enjoy teaching music theory as well as reading, but do not require it.

I have been a professional performing musician and teacher for going on a decade. I've studied jazz guitar and film scoring at Berklee as well as bass and composition at Lewis and Clark. I've toured across the country several times over, playing everything from jazz to funk, metal to pop. More importantly, I've been teaching privately since high school when I'd bike to students houses around my neighborhood. Since then I've taught at the local branches of School of Rock in Portland, OR, Boston, and New York, teaching privately, coaching ensembles, directing student concerts, and teaching theory workshops. I also have been working to integrate cutting edge digital technology into my teaching practices should students wish to explore contemporary practices. Music has long been my life's love, and my highest hopes lie in in sharing its rewards.

Travis grew up in a musical family in Santa Cruz, CA. His father was a professional guitarist and his Grandfather was the head of the music program at Cabrillo College in Aptos, so naturally he grew up with an instrument in his hand. After years of toying with the guitar Travis began formal lesson at the age of 9, quickly developing into an exceptional musician. By the age of 13 Travis was in several rock bands and performing frequently. Once in high school, Travis had no doubt that being a professional musician was what we wanted to do with his life so he started studying jazz and classical piano at a college level, studying with jazz trumpeter/arranger Ray Brown and classically trained pianist Ivan Rosenblum. Travis excelled and quickly began playing in the top Jazz Combo at Cabrillo College and in the top Big Band as well as playing professionally. In 2010 Travis moved to San Francisco to pursue his professional career and start studying Film Scoring at Academy of Art...

It all started with The Beatles, and a high school band which led the way to going to Berklee College of Music and receiving my Bachelor's Degree in Music there in 2006. Since then I have taught Rock guitar and music theory to children and adults while I was the Music Director at a community center in Boston. I'm currently serving as a MusicianCorps Fellow with the Music National Service. This keeps me very active as I spend 4 days a week teaching music to Middle and High School age students.

Rock is my main thing but also perform Soul, R&B and Bossa Nova. After many years of learning and performing songs, I have realized that learning a song is not enough. You have to give it enough practice and passion so that you can make it your own.
