A little about me:
My name is Doug H. and I am a twenty three year old Liberal Studies and English Major currently attending California State University Dominguez Hills. I spent the previous five years in the military where I worked as a apart of the Educational Services Provider on my ship where I conducted ACT, SAT, ASVAB, and CLEP exam tutoring, practice and training. I'm originally from Florida and have been in the area for roughly six months now.
I'm a diverse tutor that can handle a wide range of subjects from all subjects within elementary school and middle as well as most standardized test taking skills and English for those in high school and beyond.
I really love helping students overcome the hardships they are having in their classes. When I was younger I had a relatively hard time paying attention and completing assignments on time so I know first hand how hard it can be to catch up after how easy it is to fall behind. It's my goal to take every client and not only make sure that they pass their subject but that they excel in it by taking a wide range of different teaching techniques to help the student better understand the subject matter that isn't traditionally taught in the school system.

Thank you for your time and interest! I have a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Berkeley and have been a full-time tutor since I graduated from college in 2009. The reason why I have been lucky enough to have been able to work full-time as tutor is that I retain my clients. I work with both high school and college level students.
Since I have a degree in math, I can tutor higher level mathematics courses, like Calculus I, II, II, business Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations. You will not find me getting stuck on problems very often. And since I've been tutoring for so long, I have the experience necessary to communicate the concepts effectively. I also tutor other mathematics courses, like Pre-algebra, Algebra I & II, Geometry, and Pre-Cauclus.
My first experience tutoring was at Palomar College in 2006, while I was a student there. I was recruited by one of my professors to work for the school. My tutoring work at Palomar gave me a lot of experience tutoring students studying a variety of topics at a wide range of skill levels. I worked there until I transferred to Berkeley in 2007. After I graduated from Berkeley I immediately began tutoring again, but as a private in-home tutor. I passed the CSET mathematics subtest I & II in May 2010.
My teaching philosophy is simple. Students need to spend time learning their subject, and they need to workout their own homework problems. The tutor's job is to explain the material, do examples, and find holes in students' understanding. Mastery of a subject takes time and hard work. I help students by creating focus, which helps them use their study time efficiently, and by finding errors in students' work which helps stop bad habits from forming. I work with the students' own class material at their own pace. I watch the students work problems and see how they react to instruction and adjust my tutoring style accordingly.

Since 2008, I've been working full-time as an SAT, ACT, and GRE tutor. I've written a few books and reviewed many others to help people learn about those tests. I’m an expert on the material the tests cover (169V 166Q GRE, 35 ACT, 2310 SAT), but I think that my coaching style is more important. I combine a rigorous approach to learning the foundational skills and techniques necessary for mastery with friendliness, patience, and adaptability. Also, I continually work on getting better at what I do. I love hearing about my students’ successes and I have a genuine desire to see them do well.
Most of my students live in the San Diego, CA area, but I've also worked with many students in other parts of the country and internationally via Skype.
In addition to tutoring, I volunteer for a couple of causes: Promises2Kids – which helps foster youth pursue higher education – and Y.A.L.L.A., which helps refugee children. In my spare time, I like to run, hike, read, travel, and root for the Red Sox and Patriots.

1. Baseline. Knowing where a student is starting from can help determine how much work is needed. To obtain a real score, a student must complete an official practice test, timed strictly.
2. Goals. A concrete goal gives us a target, whether it’s a score or a school. Student motivation plays a vital role, as does the ability to plan and schedule study time.
3. Foundation. Most students need to build reading comprehension, vocabulary, math skills, grammar and punctuation skills, and writing skills. The earlier this kind of work begins, the better. Students can do a lot on their own in this area after I give them some direction.
4. Technique. I teach specific techniques for most question types that are designed to give students a process that they can use when they take the real test. I also teach test-taking and time management technique.
5. Practice. Once a student has good technique, he is ready to practice – using authentic practice material (i.e., material written by the test’s publisher).
6. Review. Much can be learned from dissecting questions whether they were answered correctly or not. Identifying what was being tested and the appropriate method to use on the question is instructive, as is determining what can be learned from the question to apply to future questions.

Originally from Washington State, where I resided throughout my college career, I currently live in San Diego. Over the course of my tutoring career I have had the opportunity to interact with a wide range of age groups, from teaching elementary students the fundamentals of tennis to leading tutoring sessions for university physics students. Having participated in 14 years of team athletics, during six of which I served as team captain, as well as various academic internships, I have gained experience in multiple types of academic advancement as well as community involvement and leadership.
I work well with students of all capabilities and learning styles, recognizing the importance of identifying with students in order to meet their individual needs. I strive to play to students' strengths, individualizing my teaching strategies based on the student's preferred mode of learning and utilizing engaging methods in order to keep the learner motivated. Doing my best to foster an atmosphere of energy and positivity in order to develop a genuine love of learning, I teach according to the philosophy that a well-rounded education cannot simply be obtained through books, classrooms, and academics. It is something that must be actively practiced and experienced.
