About Me

I have been playing music for 19 years, beginning on piano at age 4. Since then, I have learned the saxophone, guitar, drums, and bass, as well as cultivated a deep understanding of music theory. In the past few years, bass/bass guitar has become my primary instrument. Learning and playing music has enriched my life greatly, and I believe that can be true for you as well.

I have been performing since a young age, and have participated in multiple performing groups over the years. Currently, I am the bassist for The Hot Club of Zion (jazz) and bassist/songwriter for the Merchant Royal (rock).

I am currently attending the University of Utah and I am in the process of completing a Bachelor's of Music in Jazz Performance (Bass). This program has greatly expanded my knowledge of music theory, history, and composition. It has also provided me with the opportunity to work with some of the best musicians in Utah,

I am grateful for all of the joy and satisfaction that music has given me and enjoy helping others experience the same.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, I place emphasis on helping a student determine what their personal goals are, and then tailor lesson plans to those interests. My personal experience has taught me that the best learning environment is one in which the student feels relaxed and involved. As such, I strive to maintain a comfortable, yet professional setting, and consistently communicate with the student about what they want to learn.

Because each student's goals and interests are different, I do not use a specific curriculum. However, I intend to teach all of my students introductory music theory, fundamentals of sound science, and basic songwriting techniques. After several lessons, students will have a better understanding of music-making itself, as well as a clearer idea of what their musical goals are, and how to achieve them.

I look forward to working with you and helping you realize your musical potential.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will bring a bass guitar or guitar and amplifier. I will also bring lesson materials (i.e. books, sheet music, notation paper, writing utensils) as well as a metronome and recording/playback device.

For upright bass or piano lessons, student would need to have instrument of their own at their home.

*** Specialties ***
I have the most experience with the genres of rock, blues, and jazz, specifically on bass/bass guitar. I have extensive experience with gypsy/straight-ahead swing jazz, classic rock/rock and roll, and modern blues playing. I also have experience playing and, to a lesser extent, teaching country, pop, and gospel.

I am well versed in music theory, both classical and jazz, including scale and harmony theory, song forms, and performance practice.

I have played guitar as a secondary instrument for about 6 years. Though it is not my main instrument, I am very familiar with the fretboard (know every note, etc.), chords, scales, and performance practice. I would be able to teach acoustic and electric guitar. I am familiar with the genres of rock, blues, jazz, and pop.

I have played piano since a young age, and use it primarily as a composition instrument. I have played classical and romantic era music, as well as jazz standards.

My upright bass playing experience has almost exclusively been jazz-oriented. However, I have played blues, country, bluegrass and pop music on upright bass as well. I am confident in teaching those styles on the instrument.

Richard W. Salt Lake City, UT

Subjects Taught

Bass Guitar, Classical Guitar, Guitar, Music Theory, Songwriting

About Me

I began playing music at the age of six. I started with the piano and saxophone but found my true passion, by age eight, in the guitar. I took private lessons from a great teacher for the first seven consecutive years of my study and further developed my knowledge and skills through self-directed study. I received my Undergraduate degree in Music Theory from the University of Utah. The pursuit of this degree allowed me to study many different musical aspects, including: composition, music history, ear training, sight reading and music technology, along with classical and jazz guitar studies. Over the years, through my education and practice, I have learned a great deal, not just about the guitar, but also ways to teach music and engage students in their pursuit of musical knowledge.

I played in my first music group when I was 17 and started composing and arranging music at that time. I have performed at numerous events and venues, eventually touring in the western U.S. I have a true passion for music and I love sharing this passion and teaching others.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid back instructor and teach in a relaxed, low-pressure environment. I offer private and small group lessons to students ages 6 and up. I like to joke around but I do expect my students to take their instrument seriously. Students are expected to practice the techniques and music outside of lesson time. I allow students to learn music they are interested in and teach them scales, chords, popular tunes and important performance techniques. Typically, after three months, a student will be able to play more proficient by themselves and in a group. He/she will be more confident about his/her guitar playing ability and overall music knowledge. For most students, after six months of regular lessons, they are able to begin composing simple pieces and have a good understanding of music composition.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I will teach in my living room, I have a piano, plenty of room for a parent to sit in on a lesson and a very comfortable environment.

*** Specialties ***
I enjoy approaching any instrument from a theoretical base. This allows the student to understand the fundamentals of music and helps them explore the instrument of their choice to the fullest extent.
