About Me

My name is Justin B. and I've been a professional drummer and instructor the last 15 years. I have toured extensively throughout the United States, as well as playing in the UK. I have been a part of many recordings and sessions during that time and have the knowledge to teach about what those experiences are like.

Currently, I am a member of the Street Drum Corps based out of Los Angeles. We have done TV shows including Cartoon Network's Hall Of Game Awards, as well as the opening segment of Kevin Nealon's special comedy show "Whelmed, But Not Overly." which aired on Showtime.

I am a drummer that has been playing in some of the top nightclubs throughout California, Las Vegas, Arizona, and Chicago. I have been drumming alongside some very notable DJ's and am providing some of the newest entertainment in that industry.

I am currently endorsed with Pro-Mark drum sticks, Evans Drumheads, Soultone Cymbals, and play Shine Custom Drums.

*** Lesson Details ***
The focus on lessons are to identify the goals of the student, and tackle those immediately. Not interested in learning on a snare drum first? No problem. I prefer to have students playing behind a drum set from day one. I reinforce lessons through teaching true drum notation, making it easier for students to accomplish their goals in a timely matter. I like to keep things laid back and will not be a "task master" type of teacher. I want to make lessons as fun and comfortable as possible and strive to make that happen.

I use a number of instructional books from some of the best publishers of music instruction including The Drummer's Collective Series, as well as Berklee School Of Music Publishing. There are a number of DVD's as resources too! These instructional books cover a wide variety of topics including: Rock Drumming, Funk/Linear Drumming, Jazz Drumming, Latin/Afro-Cuban Drumming, Double Bass Drumming, and Rudimental Drumming.

It is my goal to have the student playing at least two different styles of drumming within the first 3 months, and being at an intermediate level within the first six months. The student will have an understanding of music notation and being able to interpret different rhythms. Most students like to learn songs and within the first six months, the student should have at least two songs memorized.

*** Travel Equipment ***
The student will need to have a drum set.

*** Specialties ***
I like to teach utilizing drum method books and reinforcing lessons with actual drum notation. I feel this is the basis of a solid drum education and helps to make learning songs and more enjoyment from drumming happen faster. I teach Rock, Funk, Jazz, Latin, Hip-Hop/R&B, Top 40, and Techno/EDM. I also have the ability to teach concert band drummers up to the High School level.

"I love teaching because it's worthwhile to see my students succeed in something they really work hard for. I believe that every student has their own unique way of learning music. I am patient and understanding, so my lesson plans will be based on the student's ability, personal interests, and goals. We can work on songs that range from Bach to Ella Fitzgerald, Rolling Stones to Adele and Taylor Swift. Music is fun and rewarding. Zack K. Sacramento, CA

Subjects Taught

Drum, Music Performance, Music Theory, Percussion, Songwriting

About Me

I was introduced to drumming at the age of 11 and quickly developed an unquenchable and indiscriminate thirst for everything music. I've since become a prominent musician both locally and nationally, and have performed and recorded with a list of artists as expansive as the genres they encompass. My instructors have included world renowned educators such as Mike Johnston, Tim Metz, and Bruce Spencer.

I have been featured on music videos appearing on MTV, FUSEtv, and ABC, appeared on KVIE’s Rob on the Road, Sacramento & Co Morning Show, and KCRA 3’s morning news. I have shared some of the largest stages on the west coast with nationally acclaimed artists such as Awolnation, Capital Cities, Middle Class Rut, Kottonmouth Kings, Big & Rich, The Lone Bellow, Molly Hatchet, Oleander, Lindsey Pavao, We The Kings, and more.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have 7 years of experience teaching private drum lessons catered to each individual student's goals. My curriculum represents a combination of my professional playing experience, various educational books and videos, and simply jamming to my students favorite music to cultivate and enrich their own musical instincts.

I create a relaxed and accepting environment. I keep things fun, and always motivate and encourage my students to pursue their own musical path at their own pace. I am also well connected in the local music community, and as my students progress, I present them with opportunities to get out there and play (and make some of that money they've been paying me back).

*** Studio Equipment ***
Two full drum sets
- 4 piece Gretsch Catalina Club (small sizes for younger students) with Dream cymbals (hi-hats, crash, and ride).
- 4 piece Shine Custom Birch (standard sizes for older students) with Sabian cymbals (hi-hats, crash, and ride).

Vater Practice pad

Macbook pro with Firepod interface and Pro Tools for student recordings, analysis, and video lessons

Sure drum mics

QSC PA system

Electric, acoustic, and bass guitar rigs to introduce students to playing in a band or ensemble

Seating for parents/caretakers

*** Travel Equipment ***
Students should provide the equipment necessary to facilitate their learning goals (i.e. drumset, practice pad, iPod and headphones).

*** Specialties ***
Although I have a comprehensive background in music and drums, my specialty lies in modern drum set performance. I focus on fundamental technique, a strong sense of groove and pocket, and encouraging the development of my students' individual voices and natural stylistic tendencies. I apply these principles across all genres, depending on the interest of each student.

My background in psychotherapy inspired me to restructure my teaching approach, to focus on building upon student's pre-existing strengths on the instrument, rather than only address their weaknesses. With this shift in perspective, I have not only seen more growth in my students - a higher percentage of my students have fallen in love with the instrument and stayed active on the drums long term.

MATERIALS - Students are responsible for the purchase of their own books, sticks, and other materials needed for the lessons they are receiving. The instructor will assist in referring students to where they can obtain these items, however I am not responsible for providing them personally. Exceptions will be made on an as needed basis.

PRACTICING – The instructor will determine how much practice is ideal for each student and will encourage students in their practicing. Nevertheless, once the instructor is gone it is up the student to do their own practicing. Progress will be made most quickly by those students who maintain the recommended practicing time. Parents are also encouraged to be involved in their student's practice. Taking the time to listen to your child play their weekly songs, and creating a set time for practicing in the student's daily routine are good ways to become involved.
