About Me

My musical life began during the "folk boom" of the 1960's. I began songwriting and performing during my high school years. Later I was a member of a folk-rock band called The Bean Angels. We preformed and recorded in the Iowa City, Iowa area. Later I attended Montana State University where I studied music education. My training included: piano skills, music theory, music history, aural perception, conducting, and vocal pedagogy. I have several decades experience in teaching. I have taught guitar, piano, voice, and ukulele, and have directed a children's choir.

I believe that each individual has his or her own particular learning style and pace. Accordingly I try to tailor my instruction to best fit the individual student. The first lessons will emphasize such things as posture and holding the instrument correctly, thus establishing a solid foundation to build on. Although I will assign exercises that are designed to build technique, I believe that creative musical expression is the true goal and that technique is just a means to that end.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music room with instruments, keyboard, computer, and recording. Parents can sit in on lessons, and waiting area available.

*** Specialties ***
I am probably most proficient in folk and classical styles of guitar. I have some degree of competency in country, rock and roll, gospel, and jazz styles.

My philosophy behind teaching has a lot to do with being physically involved in music making. I believe one needs to use one's whole body to support good singing. I'm very much into using movements to help students learn to move their breath through to create sound. I teach classical vocal technique as the basis for all styles. I teach proper breath support in order to build a strong, healthy vocal sound. After months of working with me, students will have a very strong grasp of proper breathing for singing and how to support their sound with their whole body.

*** Studio Equipment ***
keyboard
music stands
free open space

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***
Classical technique as a foundation for all singing.
Everything begins with breath
all singing is about connection--connecting to breath, to music, and to audience

Emily F. Laurel, MD

Subjects Taught

Acting, Broadway Singing, Music Performance, Music Theory, Opera Voice, Percussion, Piano, Singing, Songwriting, Speaking Voice

About Me

Hello all! I am Emily F., a recent graduate of Grove City College with a degree in Music Education. While in school I majored in Percussion and Voice and spent the majority of my time performing and gaining experience. I am currently an elementary music teacher with Prince George's County Schools. I have had years of lessons myself and have taught many students as well. As a vocalist, I can teach you how to sing anything from Top 40 hits to Broadway numbers to Operatic Arias. I will help you gain confidence as a performer and vocal strength. I am also prepared to teach beginning piano lessons to help you learn to accompany yourself and others. For percussion lessons, I have years of experience as a principal percussionist in my College's band and orchestra and would love to help you learn how to be a classically trained percussionist, not a drummer. Overall, I offer experience, knowledge, and a chance to get out of your shell and onto a stage.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, I strive to create an environment that is student centered. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible when we begin a lesson so that you can do your best. Lessons with me will be fairly laid back, but only if I see you giving 100%. My goal is to create self-motivated learners at any age. As far as curriculum goes, I will work off of what you want to learn and what books you may already have. I can suggest books for almost any genre of voice, basic piano books, and I know the best beginning percussion books out there. Regardless of genre or instrument, after a few months with me you will be a confident performer. I want all of my students to not only be trained on their instrument, but on showing their talent to the world.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Full Length Keyboard, Recording Equipment, Guitar (just in case), Ukulele.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a keyboard that I can bring if necessary. I would expect students to bring their own percussion instruments.

*** Specialties ***
I have a great deal of experience auditioning for plays and musicals and got many parts in high school in college. I have had years of experience performing in both vocal and instrumental groups. Vocally, I am comfortable teaching Broadway, pop, or classical vocal styles. In the percussion field, I specialize in mallet instruments, but I am comfortable teaching auxiliary and snare as well.

Timothy H. Washington, DC

Subjects Taught

Music Performance, Music Theory, Piano, Singing

About Me

I hold a Bachelors of Fine Arts from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. With over 15 years of experience, in both piano and voice, I've had to opportunity to perform, both domestically and internationally, with such great acts as Peter Nero and The Philly Pops, The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, and many others. I served as lead singer, pianist, and co-songwriter for a number of independent bands covering numerous genres including, but not limited to, Jazz, Pop, Rock, Acoustic, and A Capella.

Since moving to Washington DC, I've immersed myself within the local music community playing a handful of group and solo acts. I currently maintain a home music studio well equipped with musical instruments and music technology. I'm constantly practicing, writing, and recording to improve myself as an artist.

My teaching style is unique and individualized to each student. I set personalized goals to make every lesson a success, and I push my students to get the most out of themselves just like I do myself. I'm always enthusiastic and humor driven to create a personable learning environment for students of any age. Music is my life, and I'm so thrilled to have the opportunity to share my greatest passion with the hope that my students, too, will fall in love with music!

*** Lesson Details ***
My lesson environment is laid back and stress-free. I like my students to feel inspired and encouraged as they begin, and/or continue, their music education. I introduce fun and innovative ways to build students' musicianship and creativity while retaining classic methods to develop strong technique and proper performance and practice habits.

For beginners, we'll be exploring the basics of either piano, or voice, while focusing on proper technique, basic theory, and a solid skill set. Within 3-6 months, my students are able to read music and understand the language of it.

For intermediate-advanced, we'll focus on building musicianship and skill sets by furthering studies in music theory, varying styles of repertoire, proper techniques that will greatly improve your piano and/or voice abilities, songwriting, improvisation, and live performance skills. We can also cover the basics of recording so you not only have tangible evidence of your improvement over time, but the know-how to create your own music!

I ask that my students come prepared to every lesson with the motivation and commitment to learn something new each week! Lessons are a fun and creative way to discover yourself as an artist and a person, so let's get started!!

About Me

Jessica moved to the Chevy Chase/Bethesda area in 2009, having grown up and gone to school in New York and Ohio. She loves the area, and she and her husband are thrilled to be putting down roots in the community. As a performer, Jessica has traveled around the world, but throughout her career teaching has been one of her most important focuses. "As a relative newcomer to the DC area, growing my private studio has been a great way to get involved in the community. My teaching style is individualized, but I always try to include two important things: building a strong basic skill set, and developing creativity."

*** Lesson Details ***
Whether your goal is to make it into All-State, give a solo recital, play tunes at family gatherings, or just try something new for the very first time, I will help you succeed and have a good time along the way.

In my view, the most interesting thing about performing music is that it is one of the few activities that engages both the left and the right brain at the same time. With that in mind, my teaching places equal importance on developing strong technique, and developing creativity. Students learn all the basics of music, and also spend time developing strong ensemble skills and strong background knowledge of style and repertoire, so that they can enjoy music in all kinds of settings, all their lives.

Knowing from experience how "boring" it can be to learn by rote, I combine technical work with fun time playing duets together, improvising, and exploring a wide variety of styles and genres of music. After all, there is no experience so motivating as hearing a new piece that you HAVE to learn to play yourself!

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in either living room or upstairs office; Steinway baby grand piano in living room;

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect piano students to have daily access to either a piano or a keyboard with 88 full-sized, weighted keys. Bass or cello students must have their own bass or cello.

*** Specialties ***
classical, baroque, renaissance

Music should be enjoyable, so my number one goal is to bring joy to you, the performer, and to your potential audiences. I encourage you to communicate with me about your musical preferences and goals in your role as a music student.
