I am delighted to be a part of the TakeLessons team here in Portland. I have recently retired from a career in elementary education employed as a visual arts instructor. In addition to my public school career I have also given private piano lessons for the last thirteen years. I graduated from the University of Idaho in 1991 with a bachelors degree in education with a minor in music.

My love of music began at a very early age. By age five, I was improvising at the piano, and I started recording my jam sessions when I was twelve. Throughout middle and high school, I sang in a choir, and upon my graduation in 2000 from Rio Rancho High at the top of my class, New Mexico State University admitted me into its music department with a generous choral scholarship.
I studied voice from 2000 until 2005 under a variety of qualified professors. I won a NATS competition in 2003. My senior vocal recital in January 2005 included two arias, art songs in German and French, some Gilbert and Sullivan, and a few show tunes.
My major was not in voice, however, but in composition. I learned the fundamentals of orchestration both through coursework, and by studying Rimsky-Korsakov's treatise. I spent considerable time analyzing the stylistic qualities of the composers who moved me most: Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms, and Dvorak. I continued to jam at the piano about an hour a day throughout college, developing an intimate understanding of chordal relationships and progressions. I began improvising counterpoint in the Renaissance and Baroque styles, later developing some of my dabblings into full-fledged compositions. By the time I graduated in 2005 with the highest GPA of my graduating class, I had completed a symphony, which I am presently arranging for band at the behest of Dr. John Richards, conductor of the Metropolitan Youth Symphonic Band.
I believe that fluency with a variety of music languages is key to developing a truly original sound. Since I graduated, I have explored jazz, funk, and ragtime, and deeply enjoy improvising in these new styles. I even played in a punk rock band for a few months; not really my cup of tea, but it was quite an experience!
My Philosophy of Music
Music, more so than any other expressive medium, has the power to affect us emotionally. Music leads us to transcend ourselves. Through its influence, we might be uplifted to joyous elation, or moved to tears of sorrow. This magical quality explains why babies instinctively cry, and why all humans react emotionally to that noise.
Visual images-- including words on paper-- can reach us emotionally, but not to this extent. Imagine reading a powerful essay. Now imagine a gifted orator reading that essay dramatically. Which captivates you more? The orator makes music of words. Try watching a movie with the sound muted. It loses most of its vitality, and much of what it retains is an artifact of your imagining the sounds.
Music is about reaching people on an emotional level. So long as you can reach others using sound, and you reciprocate by letting the sounds of others move you, then you are not only a musician, but a good musician!

I started learning piano as a child, but it was in high school that I realized I really wanted to pursue playing keyboards, because it allowed me a way to express myself. I was hooked. Later on I attended Mt. Hood Community College, played keyboards and sang in choirs and vocal jazz. After graduating on the President's List with an Associates Degree in Special Studies Music, I directed the college Gospel Ensemble for two years before working full-time at a large local church, where I was a Music Director, Worship Leader, and keyboard player. In addition to vocal and keyboard work, I enjoyed directing large and small choirs and ensembles, band directing, orchestra conducting, and arranging many styles of music. It is exciting to experience what can happen when people work together musically--the whole becomes even greater than the sum of the parts!
I've been teaching piano for 20+ years now, and I love partnering with students to help them grow musically and realize their dreams. Some of my students have gone on to be professionals or teachers, and some are playing the music they love with their friends. Others are playing in their churches or in bands, and some play simply for personal enjoyment.
If we get the opportunity to work together, you (or your child) will discover that I am patient and encouraging. My desire is to bring your musical goals into focus through education and creative participation.

A Professional Musician, I am now happy to pass my skills and knowledge on to the next generations so that they may have ALL the fun and enjoyment of music in their lives, that I had in mine.
I have toured the East Coast Venues (NYC to Key West) for 30 years, and produced 10 CDs, and have 3 EMMY AWARDS for sound track music for the EXPEDITION FLORIDA SERIES, Nature Documentaries. They were funded by the University of Florida, Museum of Natural History, and the Tourist Development Council of Alachua County, Florida.
I play acoustic and electric six string guitars, electric bass guitar, piano and keyboards, drums, percussion and hand drums. I majored in Flute and Voice at UF and have spent my entire life immersed in the world of music.
I have played classical, rock, reggae, folk, jazz, swing, country, bluegrass, praise, gospel, afro-pop, ska and 80's music. I have toured as a solo act, a duo, a trio, and with a full 6 piece band, SKATTERBRAINZ, for 8 years.
I am a professional writer and photographer for the LEWIS RIVER REVIEW based out of Woodland, WA.
I teach lessons and classes full time, five days a week, (no lessons on Fridays/Sundays) and also perform LIVE and in person frequently in local venues for profit and charity.

I have been a guitar and voice instructor for over 15 years. I really love this job! I had a real hard time learning guitar when I was growing up because of an accident to my left arm, but I wanted to play so much that I was able to overcome it. Because of this I think I have learned to be a very patient teacher. I see students who get frustrated and think that it's too hard to play the guitar, but I promise you my program is fun and simple.I can show you the steps to success. I have taught over 500 students in a variety of cities from Minneapolis Minnesota, to Los Angeles California, and now Portland Oregon. I am currently obtaining my Masters in Music education and spiritual psychology from Marylhurst, and I have taught every age from 5-65. I am also a performer, and I own my own music publishing company through ASCAP (American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers). I also currently teach Piano to level 2, so if you are a beginner, you will love my new program. Music is my life, I can help you make your dream of playing guitar or singing come true. I've studied music at Portland State University, and am well dug into the Portland music scene. I teach you how to turn basic chords and strumming patterns into your own musical ideas, as well as learning your favorite songs. I have experience teaching students how to play most any song in front of family and friends, or with others. Students will get real music theory training as well as advanced guitar techniques. I usually teach students to sing and play the songs in order to help students work on melody and chord structure at the same time.
