About Peter

I'm a multi-instrumentalist from the Northwest with lots of love for teaching people to groove. I got my bachelors in music from Whitman College with an emphasis in Jazz Performance. I can teach anyone to rock, swing or get unreasonably funky. Lessons can be casual or serious and I'm down to tell you how to get to Carnegie Hall or onto the stage at the local jam.

I've performed with bands playing just about every style of music over the last 13 years, from rock, jazz, and classical to country, metal and even Eastern European folk music! I can help you become comfortable performing in front of an audience, work to develop stage presence and provide countless lessons that I've learned the hard way over the years.

About Peter

I knew I wanted to be a professional guitar player from the first time I picked up an electric guitar over 14 years ago. I started taking private lessons as soon as I got my first guitar, and without the crucial guidance and encouragement I received early on I certainly would not be the guitarist I am today, and that old guitar might even be collecting dust in a closet somewhere. Since I began teaching 8 years ago my goal has been to provide that same encouragement to beginning students and to help them realize that no matter what their ambitions are, they can be achieved with enough practice and they can have fun along the way!

When I started high school I realized there was a lot more to playing guitar than the hard rock and blues songs I had been learning up until then, so I ...

I have taken guitar lessons from Peter for a year and a half now, and I wholeheartedly recommend him to any child - or adult, like me - for the highest quality music lessons!

When I researched the TakeLessons website (and others), I looked for an instructor with a strong music background and saw that Peter had a degree in Jazz Studies and Composition from University of Oregon. He has been teaching for a number of years now, and can teach any style of music, including classical. He incorporates music theory into each lesson - very important if you want to learn how to play, improvise or write music. For those students who want to perform, Peter has lots of experience in that arena too, regularly touring with his band and teaming up with other musicians as well.

Peter's an enthusiastic teacher who takes his lessons seriously, and it is absolutely evident how much he loves music. He's exceedingly patient and supportive, and always gives plenty of positive feedback. He taught me how to practice properly, which doesn't mean playing a piece over and over, but rather breaking it down into sections - or even a measure or two - in order to perfect an awkward chord change or erratic rhythm. But perhaps most important is that he doesn't rush through the lesson; he makes certain you understand a technical point, or makes sure you're able to play a finger exercise correctly before he moves on to the next thing.

I've had numerous music instructors over the years in elementary, high school, college and beyond and Peter is without question one of the best teachers I've ever had. He's an incredible musician and a superb instructor. And a pretty terrific human being as well!

fun lessons!

Peter's a good teacher, smiling in the face of terrible, broken chords! The lessons are really enjoyable. Peter picks a suitable selection of music where each new piece builds on the past progress. I would recommend him to anyone.

Music performance includes the methods of bringing a piece to an audience. It includes acting, body language, tone and expression in the voice. It may also include discussions of what the song means to the performer and how they would like to share that - from standing and singing thru gestures and interpretive dance.

About Julia

I have a Master’s in Opera Performance from the Boston and New England Conservatories as well as graduating from Vocal Performance programs at Boston University and Western Washington University. I have sung professionally with Boston Lyric Opera, Children’s Theater Companies, churches and synagogue and have toured on the east coast as well as Athens, Greece.Premiering new music is a specialty - I can help you prepare your pieces for auditions. My students have successful auditions for college opera and music theater programs, and as choir soloists.
Students gain a larger vocal range and an easy, natural way of singing whether it is in a rock band, choir or as a soloist. Together we find the joy of singing while building a solid technique.

She is awesome. She has a different way of teaching vocal. She makes singing fun and easy. She has a way to interest people in vocal. I wanted to be a pop singer and I still do I never listened to Broadway music much but she gave me a list of songs from Broadway and I loved it! It's just so different and fun working with her.

Helped me build my voice

Julia V. taught me that we all really can sing, we’ve just filled our heads with mistakes we were taught as children and a sense of embarrassment about singing. She has released me from those old thought habits and helped me regain good posture (“sternum up and proud”), open up my lungs, build a solid foundation for air flow, take the tension off my vocal cords, and tell stories in song. Like the way we naturally talk.

Jane is an excellent instructor. She is wonderfully enthusiastic about music and makes her students feel the same way. My daughter started with piano lessons but eventually switched to harmonica... no problem for Jane! In addition to the lessons, Jane recorded my daughter's music - very cool! - so now I have copies of to listen to. She comes up with interesting music that appeals to my daughter and keeps her engaged. She researches different artists to demonstrate different ways the same instrument can be played to give my daughter a broader perspective of what she can do with her instrument. Jane is a terrific teacher. We've been with her for years, from grade school up through high school, and wouldn't have anyone else.

Ms. Jane is an amazing music teacher and a blessing to my family. My son has Aspergers and showed some difficulty in beginning music lessons, almost 2 years ago. Ms. Jane responded by taking the time to talk to me, figure him out, and find things that would work for him. She is patient, kind, and truly passionate about teaching children to love music. My son came to know Ms. Jane as not only a teacher but also as a good friend, and for that I will always be grateful.....Thank you Ms. Jane!!

He has illuminated my understanding for the guitar

James has been my guitar teacher for four years and has illuminated my understanding for the guitar and classical music. His love of the guitar and music is expressed in his generosity in sharing and teaching. He has a gift of patience that conveys his enjoyment of playing and listening to music, even in it's most beginning expression. One never experiences disapproval from James, the attitude is always toward learning to improve.

A positive, professional teacher.

James,

"I signed up for guitar 101 at Clark College. I found James to be a fine teacher, since he expected me, as a student, to reach beyond my abilities and; yes, compose a musical encore. As a private instructor, I find him to be tactful, as he continues to reward me with ever more complex musical sheets. He is always working with me to reach my specific goals. I could take lessons closer to my home; but continue to visit Clark College, because James has the ability to not only play great guitar, but to teach what he plays. The other Martha"
