I am originally a self-taught musician, picking up piano and guitar on my own at the age of 13. In high school, I studied music theory and sound engineering formally, and often helped my fellow students understand their lessons and learn their repertoire. Since then, I have been lucky enough to make music my full-time endeavor, working as a recording engineer and session player for other artists, playing in live bands, and teaching private lessons to students of all ages.

I have a deep love for music in all its forms, and I love to inspire that feeling in others. I strive to teach every student that they are in control of their own musical progress - I can show them the information they need to further understand a topic, but it is up to them to internalize and strengthen that understanding. With this approach, I try to instill a sense of ownership to a student's musical abilities, resulting in a growing interest in learning and mastering their art.

Charlie is a certified music teacher, who teaches in areas surrounding Clayton and travels to teach in the Raleigh and Knightdale areas. He first began teaching guitar and piano during his music studies at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. At the university and after receiving his degree in music education, he has taught and performed in various musical settings and venues which has included the genres of classical, jazz, blues, rock, folk and country. Besides teaching and performing, Charlie also is a songwriter who writes songs for his groups performances and teaches his more advanced students songwriting.

Drawing upon his education and experiences as both performer and teacher, he strives to relate his background to his student's learning experiences and progress. Adia has been described as having “a voice full of personality and expression.” Her vocal stylings have been called soulful, soothing, and classy. Dedicated to the preservation of jazz music, her energetic and exciting performances are marked by a blend of jazz standards, original compositions, and an exploration of the elements of jazz found in contemporary music genres. For over ten years Adia performed with Generations, a jazz ensemble dedicated to the preservation of jazz music, consisting of some of the most seasoned jazz musicians in the triangle area, opening for Jimmy Heath and performing with Gary Bartz. Her debut CD First Take, features Generations. Adia is still often accompanied by her father, Generations bassist Freeman L., a bassist with over thirty years of jazz performing experience.

As the son of a professional pianist from New Orleans, I was born and raised in a musical household. I began playing drums at age 6 and gradually began writing my own music on piano and guitar. I studied Jazz Performance at VCU, where I earned a B.A. in Jazz Drum Set & Piano Performance. After college, I spent 7 years performing, recording and touring in Austin, TX. In 2007 I started taking private music students and began teaching other subjects in public & private schools. My wife and I moved to Durham in 2011.

Emily's musical journey took off the day she received her first guitar for Christmas at 12 years old. Almost immediately she began writing songs and playing them for her family, friends, and anyone else who would listen! At 16 she started playing local venues around town. It was during this time that Emily began to transcribe her music. She also salvaged an old tape deck from her basement and used it to make several demo recordings.

Following her hunger for musical knowledge, Emily attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, one of the top contemporary music conservatories in the world. She obtained a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production, professionalizing her music transcription and recording skills. Emily received several awards at Berklee: first prize for the Perfect Pitch competition for excellence in songwriting and first prize for the annual Berklee songwriting competition to prevent substance abuse.

David discovered his love for music early on at the age of seven with the musical/movie: The Sound of Music. He and his siblings would entertain their babysitter by acting out the entire musical - singing and dancing along with the soundtrack. To make it even more fun, they would sometimes speed up the vinyl record and perform in extra-fast mode! (And that was way before 'Wii - Just Dance!')

He vividly remembers his first real musical instruction back in elementary school:
“Everyone in 4th Grade was given a Recorder to learn how to play 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star'. When the music teacher had the class play together, she noticed that I wasn't looking down at my music booklet as I played, since I was 'playing by ear'. Not only was my booklet turned to the wrong page; it was upside down as well! To admonish me, she had me stand up in front of the whole class and play solo - as she held the booklet in front of me. Enthusiastically, I rendered the complete song...

My name is Alice, but I prefer to be called Al. I grew up working with music in the church, whether it was singing in the choir, playing hymn arrangements on piano, or guitar in the praise band. I have competed in vocal ensembles and have also written arrangements for them to perform. Under my direction, many singers have been brought out of the shower or up from the church pew to perform solos and sing harmony in small groups of singers. Although church was a main musical influence, I am also well-versed in classical, opera, rock, and many other genres. I earned my Bachelor’s degree in music from The College at Southeastern in Wake Forest in 2010, with my concentration in piano. In my time at Southeastern, I studied pieces from all eras of music history, from Baroque to Modern. I have also studied voice at the college level, and played bass guitar in a local rock band.
