Now the condensed history in third-person writing style:
Playing guitar since age 10 and not able to afford music lessons, McKay was determined to learn music in the formal manner. A regular at the local library - borrowing every music instruction book and haunting accomplished musicians throughout Boston for advice - spending every available minute applying this knowledge to his playing.
Forming his first 'real' original rock band at age 15, the band known as "Adrenalin" (with Paul Geary on drums, Gary Cherone on vocals and pre-Steve Vai bassist Philip Bynoe) toured extensively throughout New England in the late 70s and early 80s, opening for many regional and national acts of that period.
Adrenalin eventually morphed into the funk-metal band "Extreme", achieving a number of Gold Records - notably for the hits "More Than Words". "Mutha" and "Whole Hearted" based on original Adrenalin tunes penned by McKay. Extreme originally featured two guitarists - McKay and Nuno Bettencourt. McKay was living out of state at the time and pursuing other endeavors, and left the band several years before their major label signing.
Backtracking to the Adrenalin years, McKay gained a reputation and strong local following as an advanced player, songwriter and singer belying his age. A mid-sized Boston-area music school offered a teaching position which he worked after school hours and and weekends. McKay befriended and sought mentoring by other instructors at the school - particularly several very accomplished jazz musicians well-known in the Boston and New England jazz, blues and rock circuit - and further improved his playing style, technique and knowledge-base.
After leaving Extreme, McKay continued teaching music as time allowed, worked with many well-known and not-so-well-known artists through the 80s, 90s and early 2000s - serving as a session player, performer and contracted songwriter - and pursued non-musical interests in the business world as an entrepreneur.
Although semi-retired from the "big" music business in favor of slowing down a bit and staying close to his New England roots, McKay remains a full-time music and creative professional. Teaching, songwriting, recording and performing 3-6 shows each week, McKay is also a documentary filmmaker and author of books and articles on music, marketing and general business topics.
