    About Zack K.

I was introduced to drumming at the age of 11 and quickly developed an unquenchable and indiscriminate thirst for everything music. I've since become a prominent musician both locally and nationally, and have performed and recorded with a list of artists as expansive as the genres they encompass. My instructors have included world renowned educators such as Mike Johnston, Tim Metz, and Bruce Spencer. I have been featured on music videos appearing on MTV, FUSEtv, and ABC, appeared on KVIE’s Rob on the Road, Sacramento & Co Morning Show, and KCRA 3’s morning news. I have shared some of the largest stages on the west coast with nationally acclaimed artists such as Awolnation, Capital Cities, Middle Class Rut, Kottonmouth Kings, Big & Rich, The Lone Bellow, Molly Hatchet, Oleander, Lindsey Pavao, We The Kings, and more. *** Lesson Details *** I have 7 years of experience teaching private drum lessons catered to each individual student's goals. My curriculum represents a combination of my professional playing experience, various educational books and videos, and simply jamming to my students favorite music to cultivate and enrich their own musical instincts. I create a relaxed and accepting environment. I keep things fun, and always motivate and encourage my students to pursue their own musical path at their own pace. I am also well connected in the local music community, and as my students progress, I present them with opportunities to get out there and play (and make some of that money they've been paying me back). *** Studio Equipment *** Two full drum sets - 4 piece Gretsch Catalina Club (small sizes for younger students) with Dream cymbals (hi-hats, crash, and ride). - 4 piece Shine Custom Birch (standard sizes for older students) with Sabian cymbals (hi-hats, crash, and ride). Vater Practice pad Macbook pro with Firepod interface and Pro Tools for student recordings, analysis, and video lessons Sure drum mics QSC PA system Electric, acoustic, and bass guitar rigs to introduce students to playing in a band or ensemble Seating for parents/caretakers *** Travel Equipment *** Students should provide the equipment necessary to facilitate their learning goals (i.e. drumset, practice pad, iPod and headphones). *** Specialties *** Although I have a comprehensive background in music and drums, my specialty lies in modern drum set performance. I focus on fundamental technique, a strong sense of groove and pocket, and encouraging the development of my students' individual voices and natural stylistic tendencies. I apply these principles across all genres, depending on the interest of each student. My background in psychotherapy inspired me to restructure my teaching approach, to focus on building upon student's pre-existing strengths on the instrument, rather than only address their weaknesses. With this shift in perspective, I have not only seen more growth in my students - a higher percentage of my students have fallen in love with the instrument and stayed active on the drums long term.
