Specialties

I teach using Alfred and Faber methods as beginning method books, and supplement with many different books from a variety of publishers. I teach classical, jazz, ragtime, blues, popular, patriotic, Disney, hymns, contemporary Christian, broadway, movie themes, etc. I teach music theory to all my students as a regular part of each lesson.

Lesson Details

I like to teach students at the individual pace that works for them. Some students move quickly and others like to have a little more time to absorb new skills. I work with each student to find a pace that does not bore them because it is too slow, nor frustrate them because it is too fast. I welcome questions and enjoy seeing students excited when they can play a new song and share that with their families and friends. Music is meant to be shared!

I use the Alfred method for lessons and ... supplement with many different publishers, such as Faber, Bastien, Word, Lorenz, Lillenas, and others. I enjoy teaching many different styles of music such as classical, jazz, rag, blues, popular, sacred, contemporary Christian, patriotic, and others. I believe students can learn many different skills by studying a variety of styles of music.

I teach music theory as a part of all piano lessons. I also encourage my students to share their pieces with their families, friends, communities, churches, and on recitals.
I like for students to have positive experiences when sharing their pieces on recitals. I let the student decide if they would be more comfortable playing by themselves, or whether they would like me to play a duet part with them on their first few recitals. I usually have many different styles represented on recitals and want the students to have fun sharing their pieces.

At each lesson, I always compliment the student on the things they are doing well in their pieces. Then we work to correct the aspects of the piece that need to be improved. I like to partner with my students to help them achieve their dreams. I want my students to enjoy their music and have the desire and ability to play for life. It is such a joy to be able to sit down and open a songbook and be able to play whatever song is in the book. That is the joy that I like to share and pass on to each student. Then they will have the ability to enjoy playing piano throughout their life.

After 3 to 6 months, students usually know several songs they can share with others and are learning to read music and understand the music theory appropriate to their level. This is the foundation to continued study of piano and/or other instruments.

About

I have taught piano and music theory privately in the Greensboro/High Point area for the past 21 years. I have taught students from age 5 through adults, from beginners to intermediate and advanced students. I enjoy working with students of all ages and backgrounds and have taught public, private, and homeschool students. I’ve had many students through the years that have gone on to pursue music degrees and careers.

For the past seven years, I have been the Music Director/Accompanist ... at a church in Jamestown, NC. I lead worship and accompany the praise team, choir, soloists, small ensembles, and congregational singing.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music , Cum Laude, in 1988 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where I studied with Paul Stewart. In 1991, I earned a Master of Business Administration, also from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In 1992, I completed Kindermusik Teacher Training in Beginnings and Young Child I, and in 1997, completed Musikgarten Teacher Training in God’s Children Sing.

I have over 33 years experience in the music industry including teaching music, piano, theory, and performing, directing, and accompanying music in the church and community at large. I love music and enjoy sharing that with others, whether teaching piano, leading worship, performing, accompanying others, playing for the NC Composers’ Alliance, or playing dinner music in local restaurants or furniture market.

The variety of work experiences I’ve had through the years has equipped me to prepare my students to succeed in learning to play the piano and love music. I can help you achieve your goals, whether they are to just play for yourself, play in the talent show at school, prepare for a college audition, or prepare for a career in music.
