Oboe & Reed Making Lessons

I teach beginner through advanced levels with a focus on learning proper breathing, embouchure and form. I teach music theory skills, reed making and adjustments, and musicianship . I have been a double reed and woodwind specialist for over 20 years and I teach using classical and modern method books, pop, rock and jazz. I teach using positivity and encouragement, that I may help each student visualize and become the best instrumentalist they can be.

About Valerie L.

I have been teaching for over 25 years and I have studied with Frank Kocman (student of Nilo Hovey), Larry Allen (student of Robert Bloom & Humbert Lucarelli), Hollis Ulaky (Principal Oboist of Charlotte Symphony Orchestra), and Amanda Hardy (Principal Oboist of Portland Symphony Orchestra- student of John Ferrillo). Learning many teaching styles and techniques from these great teachers, I have made it my main goal to teach every student in the way that best suites their learning style. I teach the basics of breathing, form and embouchure paired with music theory and a variety of genres, so that each student will get a well rounded education and grow a love of the woodwinds, as I have. I specialize in double reeds, reed making, and teaching neurodiverse students. I currently am earning a secondary degree in psychology & a masters in ABA/Autism Studies. I work part-time as a behavioral tech and have experience working with clients who have autism, ADHD, and anxiety and mood disorders.

Val has a real positive attitude and infectious energy when working with my son. She has helped him with many minor details (breathing, finger placement, etc) besides just working with him on new content.

Val is kind, patient and supportive of our very, very new 13 year old clarinet player. She is always sure to give great feedback as well as what he should specifically work on before the next lesson.
